Does partition software generally make 100% sure it is only partitioning away free space ?
-Steven Avery (March 26, 2012, 02:58 AM)

Generally yes, however that shouldn't stop you from checking at least twice exactly what is going to happen once you click the GO button.

Does the software move files away from the end of one partition to create the next partition before
doing anything else ?

No.  By this question I'm assuming you're talking about creating a new partition on a drive that's already in use.  You should resize existing partitions to create the free space you require for the new partition.  Only the Resize/Move functions of partitioning software will move files, anything else will generally destroy.

Should you defragment before partitioning ? (presumably it is a smart idea). In any special way ?

For a drive with existing partitions that you want to keep, yes.  For a drive in which you intend to delete all or some partitions to create free space for new partition(s), no.

ie. If you intend to use Resize/Move to create enough space for a new partition, then you might gain a little speed by defragging first.  However, when you factor in the time for defragging + partition resizing/moving against just a straight resize/move - is there a net gain?
This will depend on whether you do your partition butchering with the OS online or offline.
Offline - you have the benefit of the OS not interfering with your operations but may lose the benefit of better interface drivers, (hence speed).
Online - you have the benefit of possibly better interface drivers but the OS might require you to restart to complete the operations anyway.

Generally, I do all partition operations offline.

Does this question vary a lot between software products ?

Depends on driver support generally but otherwise, no.

Do you find any great functional fundamental distinction between the Windows products (Paragon, Easeus, Aomei, etc.)
and the more tech partition stuff like Terabyte (Bootit) that works outside Windows ?

No, since they almost always provide a version that lets you do it all with the OS offline.  eg. Paragon has a bootable Linux version for both their free/pay versions - pay versions also get a WinPE based version which has better driver support.

In the old days it made a difference where you started partitioning (e.g. in XP or underneath). Is that a factor today ?

I haven't found it to be.

Granted there are functional differences in products, (e.g. a Pro product compared to Lite or Free will show you
some differences, as will reviews) and there are differences in support and cost.  It seems like the software has
generally become fairly good.  One feature I noticed is that some software may be stronger than others in simply
moving x gigabytes of space from one partition to another.

===========================

Your thoughts ?

Before I partition anything to do with the drive the OS is on, I will make an offline image of the OS partition, (or the whole drive if the partition occupies the whole drive  - <40GB in total), to an external drive - in my case I just boot into Paragon HDM11Pro on an external and do everything from there, (backup/partitioning).
For any other drive, (ie. data drives), I'll just make sure that any data I don't want to lose is backed up - which isn't much compared to the size of the drives, (~200GB out of a total of ~4TB).  A Microserver takes care of OS and essential data backup, (monthly, weekly and daily), and I also have a 640GB USB3 drive that triggers a data backup when it's plugged in.
Anything else, I'm prepared to wear the loss, (eg. Steam games, downloads, etc), because I just look at it as I probably needed to clean the drive out anyway - even the OS falls under that category, it's not essential to back it up, just convenient.

These days the quality of software amongst the various big names, (Acronis, Paragon, EASUS, etc), are reasonably equivalent - the only major difference I've found is in the drivers they provide, (for offline), since these will determine the speed at which operations will get done.

My short-term attempt is to take my lightly used Windows 7 64-bit puter and add a d: and some drives for
a linux install.  And I may do similar on a spare older XP system.

My recommendation from the times I've dabbled with a Linux install is to create all the partitions first, ie. root, user and swap.  When it comes to installing, the Linux installer will find those partitions and automatically use them instead of throwing you into the installers partitioning tool.

I've been looking at FlexRAID for a while - it wouldn't run on WHS 2011 but they've recently released v2 which does, so I might have another look as the storage pooling seems especially suited to my needs.

FlexRAID is a highly scalable and smart storage system that turns independent hard drives of various sizes, makes, and models into storage pools and storage pools into storage clouds.

Additionally, FlexRAID provides data protection, monitoring, and recovery through RAID over any filesystem (RAID-F™) in a non-destructive fashion.

It lives above the filesystem layer so you can actually remove a drive from the system, plug it into another machine and providing it can read the filesystem, (NTFS, FAT, Ext2-4, etc), you can read/write to it.  So if the motherboard ever died you don't need to recreate the RAID environment with the same hardware to get your data back, just plug the drive(s) into another computer.

The movie was very annoying. But the actress was so hot I had to find more of her flicks.

Ha!  I thought to myself, "That looks like the actress from 'The Transporter'."

DUH!   :)

Probably a pointless comment since you might already have looked, (and SJ has far more experience than me), but this KB article sounds like the problem you're experiencing.

Yikes. They must also have some kind of location thing using your IP address by region because when I type "pizza" I get *eight* listings for local restaurants in my town! I'm not even logged in to any Google services!   :o

They've had IP based ads for years - although I don't normally see them due to Firefox addons.

Does anyone know how to remove the "google ads" from the results listings using either ABP or ad muncher?

Here's mine for AdBlock:

And when you open AdBlocks Blockable Items list, I have:

The three items blocked are: Bottom Ads, Right-Hand-Side Column and Top Ads.

It's not freeware in any way, shape or form:
Movienizer is distributed as try-before-you-buy. You can use the trial version with its limitations as long as you wish. If you like the program, you have to purchase a license in order to unlock all features. Otherwise, it should be removed. Detailed information is available at the licensing page.

The only way it could be considered free under those terms is if you hate it and continue to use it as trialware....slightly oxymoronic.

I still use Personal Video Database, after trying EMDB, AMC and Movienizer, PVD's flexible file importing is a lot better when it comes to adding files into the database.  PVD is the only one, (of the above), that seems to import the properties of the files, (resolution, codecs, etc), and it also allows you to specify a regex expression to parse the file names.

No adds here using Crome with AdBlock -- have you tried clicking that "why these adds?" link and see if it's something you can disable perhaps?

No adds here using FF & Adblock - I wonder is it a European vs. US thing (me & Jibz being in eu/europe)

Good point.

I'm down under :)

But yes, I tried disabling/enabling AdBlock/DNTMP/Ghostery a few times, (this is only in Dragon), and it's come good, ie. no ads.  Don't know what happened, maybe it managed to sneak in an extension update while I wasn't looking.

Firefox, (plus addons), has always blocked the ads - that's my main browser.  Dragon is my portable browser.

Comodo Dragon with AdBlock Plus, Do Not Track Plus & Ghostery installed and enabled.....and still the ads get through.

2012-06-06_22-24-18.jpg

If I put it into Incognito mode then they stop.

Interestingly, if I disable AdBlock Plus, DNTP & Ghostery I get two sponsored ads instead of one.

Makes me glad I use Firefox :)

FlashJet Scan might let you do this, (you may have to click the scan button each time) - it's free and will scan to a PDF, (and optionally organise them into folders).

You need .NET 3.5.
3740
If you want to possibly avoid any keylogging you could try the following:

1) Put a portable browser on your flash drive, (not necessary but does come in handy),
2) Grab the source archive from here and extract to the flash drive, (you can delete everything but the index.html and js, css folders),
3) When you want to decrypt, open the index.html, type in your password, then cut and paste into your encryption program.

Possibly also make sure the browser is running in privacy mode before doing it....and make sure no-one is peering over your shoulder :)

Being in the UK on of the advantages of using OpenDNS (and OpenDNScrypt) is to avoid UK ISP DNS filtering but I thought the article made some interesting points for those of us outside the US.
-Carol Haynes (June 01, 2012, 10:50 PM)

According to OpenDNS they have a datacentre in London and:
Unlike other providers, OpenDNS’s network uses sophisticated Anycast routing technology, which means no matter where you are in the world, your DNS requests are answered by the datacenter closest to you.

So in theory, you don't need to use OpenDNScrypt, just setting your DNS IPs to OpenDNS should bypass any IP filtering done by your ISPs DNS, you'll be routed to OpenDNS' London datacentre.

FWIW, I run my own DNS purely because it's faster, (even for uncached fetches generally), and I don't have to rely on someone else's, (which was a problem at a couple of my previous ISPs).

1) There is no RTC on the board so the time and date are wrong - how the heck do you set the time and date?
-Carol Haynes (June 02, 2012, 10:54 AM)

Perhaps grab one of the many Arduino I2C RTC modules, (like this one on ebay), and interface it to the GPIO?

If nothing else, it'll be an opportunity to enhance your programming skills :)

Type in "ordinary man rules the world" in google just now. It's like the third in the list. This is really silly.

You're not wrong, I just tried your search, (with and without quotes), and got no hits for the movie in the first 5 pages of results.

EDIT: HA!  Got my old results back by blocking the Google search engine cookie using a Firefox addon: No cookie for Google search

Now Collusion remains blissfully blank whenever I do a Google search

Guess duck duck go and Bing just doesn't have the same coverage.

It's why I gave up on DDG after only a week as my default search engine, it just wasn't showing me the results that should have been right at the top.

Google gives me the results I want, I just try to minimise the carnage getting them.  :D

I searched for: movie ordinary man absolute power

Search results have changed, (even in the short period between when I first did it and now, eg. DC didn't appear in the original results), but when I first did it the movie title came up 2 or 3 times within the top ten.

IMDB, Answers.com, (the two I reference above), and one other reference World Sci-Fi Cinema - so I took a stab at it being the most likely.

EDIT: Now I only have the IMDB reference in the top ten and Answers.com doesn't get a mention in the top twenty.

The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936) ?

An ordinary man suddenly finds that anything he says comes true. Or at least, almost anything!

Plot from Answers.com
As a result of a discussion between a trio of gods over the true worthiness of Earth, a retiring British shop assistant is granted miraculous powers in this fantasy based on an H.G. Wells story. Roland Young stars as George McWhirter Fotheringay, whose new powers are virtually limitless; choosing to use them for good, he sets out to create a utopian society. Still, despite a succession of miraculous deeds, George's plans to cure all of the world's ills is met with disbelief. As proof of his power, George wills the earth to stop spinning on its axis, which results in its citizens flying off the planet into space. Because George is indestructible, he is able to shout out his last wish, which restores the world--and George himself--back to normal. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

The OTF unpack/repack sounds good, but it also mandates a pristine exit to avoid data loss (eek!).

I wasn't going to mention that aspect because there's absolutely no way to guard against it - it's just part and parcel with the whole 'self-contained' thing.

You could bundle up the executable and it's dependant files using something like Cameyo but having your data separate in the same directory is a much better option than bundling it.

Phone Dialer works just fine, and has been part of Windows since 95.

Still need to pass a highlighted number to it but at least you don't have to screw around with the comms side of things.
