Wow, very long article indeed - I'm at page 22/31 right now. Kudos to OCZ for actually listening up, and sacrificing some bandwidth to fix latency problems... might look less impressive on paper (and thus get flamed by people who think they have hardware knowledge), but the end result is a fast and usable drive.

Hm, sounds weird.

Is your burner the single drive on the IDE cable? Have you tried replacing the IDE cable? (Or at least making sure it's 100% socketed). Things like that can cause errors - I had some really wacky hard drive problems because of flawed cables once.

Anyway, burners are cheap. I've had OK experience with LiteOn - they're not super++ but they're not bad either, and should cover normal demands just fine. I haven't upgraded burner for a while though, so I'd definitely read up on reviews - which I might hav to do soon, since my current drive is acting up :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Rambooster. Junk?

When you close firefox you will get back the hogged-up RAM, but sometimes it can take a while for FF to shut down cleanly. On my (pretty beefy) workstation, it can take some 20-30 seconds after a day of using FF, and I'll have a single core maxxed out while memory is being cleaned up.

And yes, programs like that are generally junk - they don't do anything Windows doesn't do by itself automatically on a as-needed basis, and most of the programs use very dirty methods that are pretty counter-productive.

What makes you think it's a software problem?

Use ImgBurn and check tools->Filter Driver Load Order. That will let you see filter drivers attached to the CDROM class... if there's nothing suspicious there, it's most likely not a software issue.

just download one from its chinese site, fill the email address only.
Sounds like very bad advise to me :)

You have to do that anyway :). Btw, when a SSD starts failing, does it actually lose data, or is it just unable to erase the failing cells?
Once a cell excels the maximum number of erase/write operations, it remains in read-only mode.
That's what I thought/hoped. Much better than what you get with a head crash on a mechanical HDD... :)

I do look forward to the day where a (fast) SSD is available for a reasonable price. At something like $150 for 64GB, I'd definitely get one to replace my system drive.

It could also be normal wear-and-tear of the drive, even if you haven't burned much with it.

Btw, if you have relatively basic burning needs, I would recommend ImgBurn - nero is bloated junk.

Wide lines take longer to read than short ones - you spend too much time re-sync'ing when you progress to the next line. The additional vertical space that widescreen monitors offer is better used on stuff like IDE toolbars, imo.

On the other hand, too short identifiers make code cryptic to read, and this is a problem you often see in *u*x source. On the other end of the spectrum we have Windows' VeryLongFunctionNamesThatAreSometimesOverTheTop(), along with sometimes insanely long argument lists - that's not win either.

If you need two-space tab, you should probably refactor your code :P

Non-english characters (heck, even language) in source code? Don't even get me started :P

Maniac :D

The page was slashdotted yesterday, so it's not until now I see pics etc. The case looks very sweet, but the hardware is... SO... underpowered. Which is of course the whole point, but still. I would've went for an ARM cpu or such, that could as least be useful.

This made me laugh:

Interesting tool, Phil!

It's worth noting, though, that RegFromApp doesn't seem to use a driver (from a very cursory glance), and could thus miss some program actions.
3711
ProcMon is like a combined super version of FileMon and RegMon - afaik FM and RM were discontinued after ProcMon appeared?
3712
I can relate to the ease of already knowing where to look to find download links at a few sites (e.g. freewaregenius) -- brain is already trained to handle those layouts.
Heh, I usually find that software that software's main sites have fairly easy-to-spot download links, whereas a site like http://www.free-down...et/programs/xplorer2 took me almost half a minute to grok (yeah, the location is pretty obvious, but it wasn't where I expected it, I guess :-[).
3713
If you haven't heard of ProcMon until now, you should probably take a look at the rest of the sysinternals tools - there's a lot of goodstuff there!
3714
Sysinternals' Process Monitor can do quite comprehensive logging. In fact, it's so comprehensive you have to set up filters in order not to be completely swamped with the log :)

Oh, I'm not offended by ÆD (but it is an evil place), and a lot of the stuff might be predictable. But there's a lot of funny-pictures there, and some of the entries (like the one on Denmark) has a bunch of funny stuff :)
3716
I've never downloaded software from one of those blog sites - if something has sounded interesting, I've always visited the author's site. Same goes for even the bigger download sites, I always try to grab the stuff from the author's site (which often has involved going from download.com -> mainsite -> back to download.com to download, unfortunately :P)
3717
tomos: facebook has an "Invite Friends" feature, that's probably how you've ended up getting those mails (unless they have really been counterfeit versions :)). Lots of people blindly import their addressbook from gmail, HoTMaiL, etc. and fire out invites to everybody.

Yes, you have to be joined up to see people's profiles, but imho that's kinda the whole point - I wouldn't have a facebook profile (even with the limited info I provide) if any random Joe could view it.

As Ehtyar said, handle authentication stuff server-side. If a user's session/whatever has expired, simply deny access to the media files - presto, problem, solved.

It turns out the real reason was that she had been staying with a family with three children all of whom had been extolling the huge advantages of their very pretty MacBooks.
-Carol Haynes (March 17, 2009, 04:52 AM)
Isn't this the reason why most mac-users end up with a mac? To look smart. And make outrageous claims like "photoshop filters run faster because photoshop is a mac product!"

Nice! :)

Yes, ÆD is a cruel, vile, nasty and evil place, definitely not for the faint of heart. I find it amusing from time to time, though, probably because in a world this grotesque, the best defense is being even more far out? I don't know.

vegas: while I'd definitely love a SSD, it's still too early to comment on longer life wrt. consumer models using MLC memory. Nobody seems to agree on the MTBF caused by limited # of erase cycles. Also, wrt. speed, the cheaper (or, rather, purchasable-without-selling-your-soul) models generally have lower transfer rates than late-model harddrives. Seek time tends to be better, though :)

The main downfall is recovery, not an option that I know, so you would have to be sure to backup regularily.
You have to do that anyway :). Btw, when a SSD starts failing, does it actually lose data, or is it just unable to erase the failing cells?

Kind of cute video, but disappointed me a bit:

first, it's a bit silly that the evildoer has no clue that he miiight end up being engulfed in his own plan to destroy the world. Come oooon, people.

Second, the video doesn't show the exponential growth. OK, so this isn't a 100%-accurate-science kind of video, but still. It's talking about exponential growth, but then showing linear reproduction of the nanobots instead of exponential. That's just dumb.

Otherwise, I liked the visual style and the tongue-in-cheek tone :)
