I don't think you'll really be needing that remote access card unless you plan on doing a lot of out-of-band system management.

O_O Crap! ...I didn't even see that one (nice catch). That would be totally over the top for a home server (and they're not cheap IIRC).

So if the storage is going to be in an external enclosure, what's with the 4TB Server storage? Me confused.

I still think the more mainstream (and brutally tested) straight server hardware option is the best/safest. Those external boxes make me a bit nervous about getting parts/support in a few years down the road when something fails. Name brand server parts of today will still be available to our grandchildren out of a warehouse somewhere.

"Why did you make this mistake?"

Well, first a crucial piece of information is missed, and then the rest of it just falls into place naturally...  :D

[Supervisors hate me]

two things bugging me about that config. It's a rack system, why? It's much easier to stuff a tower in a corner somewhere. Rack systems require a...Rack. Which is going to take up a good bit of room, or it'll have to sit on top of something large/flat. Which is still not a stellar option as cooling could get tricky.

6 drive bays with 4 1TB drives and 2 emptys, doesn't sound like a lot of room for expansion. I thought you were after something like 13TB+??

Although you could go with a Gen III 4U PowerEdge 2900 with 10 Drive slots...That'll give you some room to grow. :)

^ I've come to the point where I dislike context menus, because they are overused for the wrong things, and in doing so, the whole menu is slowed down.

It does kinda defeat the purpose of trying to do something quickly if the menu lags the whole process. That's why I stick with only the defaults. ...Well except for WinRAR. ;)

Btw, anyone else mildly amused by the fact that they removed the menu, added the ribbon, added tabs to the ribbon, and now it more or less looks like the menu used to in the above screenshot?

Yes, now that you mentioned it...it does seem a bit silly.

Well said complement to exactly what I was pointing out in my first post here.  The "brain-dead" are not necessarily as brain-dead as they seem, it is just "I have to follow this script or I loose my job.  I don't care who you are, you are not worth my job as horrible as it is, because I still need to put food on my table."

Fair point, however... When internal support policy clearly states that anyone with a static address account should be immediately kicked up to second level tech support ... and. you. don't... Brain~Death.

When the customer clearly states they they are using a piece of equipment that isn't on your Flow-Chart (see above...), and this doesn't give you pause to go find a supervisor before blindly forging forth in the hopes that something magical will happen... Brain~Death.

When you are arguing with one of your own network engineers. Who is actually at the location in question. Over paper-work... Brain~Death.

I frequently have to take support calls for our company, and it has never taken more than about a minute to assess the skill level of the person on the other end of the phone. It's really not that complicated, and simply involves paying attention to how a person describes their issue. Did they call the box with all the wires sticking out of it, a router, or a thingy? Etc., etc., etc.

The only skill that really requires is giving a shit ... Which is apparently quite rare in the support biz these days.

I like keyboard shortcuts and context menus, so as long as they keep the little Hide-the-Silly-Ribbon arrow button in the top right corner ... I'm ok with it being there/an option for end users.

Hope you told these two techs how much you appreciated what they'd done - and if you can put your politically correct hat on for a bit you might want to send the company a short letter of commendation for them sorting out what seems to have been a "complex layered situation of multiple failures and defects" which they had to work through

Yes, and actually they were also kind enough to give me the number for a supervisor that I'll be contacting later today. Apparently they're rather tired of cleaning up this clowns messes and want rid of him too.

For the rest, glad you found it entertaining. :)

Living Room / Centurylink is on CracK
« Last post by Stoic Joker on August 28, 2011, 02:25 PM »
So Friday night I get home from work, with a fully loaded to-do list of client updates only to find out that my internet connection is down.

Why was it down? Well, because CenturyLink (my ISP's current name) is on CracK. They had an unrequested/announced/wanted/needed update to do, and they plowed through the list of folks using 3rd party contractors that obviously know less about telco that my friggin dog does.

When the neighbors saw the black SUV, with out-of-state plates, magnetic signs, and a scruffy ragamuffin with shabby, baggy clothes, and his hat on back-wards prowling about our house. They ended up having a lengthy debate about strolling over to shoot his silly ass. I like my neighbors...

CenturyLink's "Tech Support", is the most pathetic bunch of Flowchart Reading Morons I have ever had the misfortune to be stuck on the phone with.

They new nothing of the system-wide update that was going on.
They completely ignored the information I gave them about the "Service Vehicle" that was there.
They made no attempt to even check if the line was active.
They insisted on resetting my router, even though the issue had nothing to do with the part of the config that gets reset.
They were incapable of grasping the incredibly basic concept of I've already tried a different router (I keep several spares) which -duplicating the results (x3...)- crystal clearly proves that there is nothing wrong with the fucking router.

After pissing an entire hour down the drain, I finally get kicked up to an "engineer" who after keeping me on hold for yet another half an hour ... admitted that:

There was an existing work order for my line...
They couldn't "see" me either. Even with the low level protocol tests that are supposed to identify my NID.

Well...Welcome to the land of Duh!!!

They offered to get someone out there sometime between 8am and 5pm the next day (Saturday). Great... Way to narrow it down. Now I get to sit here with my thumb up my ass all freaking day waiting for who knows what.

Thankfully the guys that showed up (at damn near 5...) were actually good at what they did. They were also quite helpful. And fought tooth and nail with the idiots at the main office who wanted to put it off until Monday...Because some paperwork hadn't quite cleared yet. Paperwork?!? Oh hell no...

The pair I'm on was not connected to anything at the CO. Hm... and that didn't throw up a flag why??

They had to give me a new IP Address, because apparently they'd misplaced mine (And nobody there is apparently capable of understanding WTF STATIC Means...).

The first new IP Address they gave me wasn't even in the same range, as the hardware I was connected to... (e.g. it worked, not.)

An hour and a half later, the tech finally managed to wrangle an IP that would actually work out of someone at the main office. But this was only after he at one point, point blank told the brain dead drone on the other end of the line that he was in fear of his life if he tried to leave the location with the connection still down. Now mind you I'd made no threats of any kind. He was simply doing whatever he had to to get a proper reaction out of the dead space on the other end of the line. And is seems that it does indeed truly require a confirm-able life & death emergency to get one of these dip-shits up off there lazy retarded asses to go find a god damn supervisor.

So... If anyone is ever wondering why I have such a "harsh" attitude towards large corporations... (see above) :D

The two guys that came to the house Saturday, deserve a raise. The rest of the company should be immediately sterilized in defense of the gene pool.

The question for me, is will any of the above handle the Exchange Server transaction logs (replay/truncation requirements)? I've about had it with Symantec BackupExec and would dearly love to scour it from my world.

I'm with vlastimil

Also keeping the kernel trapped in memory is about as effective as having all of the shift managers at a burger joint all show-up for the same shift. They'll all just be tripping over each-other because they are not all needed at any one given time.

Windows is actually really good at memory management. So it's best to just leave it be, so it can do its thing.

What's your opinion on this:

Windows willingly swaps its own code from memory to make room for your other programs. But since Windows code is the most often used when you run your system, swapping it can slow things down. You can save swap time by making Windows lock its own kernel in RAM, as long as you have enough memory (512MB).

Note that the Registry controls all swapping of the kernel, and any erroneous alteration in the Registry can make your PC inoperable. Use the program Regedit (usually found in your Windows or WinNT folder). Click on My Computer | Local Disk (C:) | Windows | Regedit.

Expand the listings to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management in the left-hand half of the window. Highlight DisablePagingExecutive on the right-hand side. Then click on Edit | Modify and enter the value 1. Click on OK, close Regedit, and reboot your computer.

Seemed like a nice tweak back in the 2k days, but I haven't used it in years.

With a habit of multitasking I frequently have 50 to 100 things going at once as I (am forced to) bounce from one project to another. So I tend to hedge my bets a bit and run a fixed size 2GB PageFile with 4GB of physical RAM on a 64-bit machine.

With that configuration and work load, I've never had any stability issues with this machine running either Vista or 7. And the machine is almost 5 years old now.

So you are using memory, to access memory, that's already in memory ... Why?
3719
I can see lots of uses for clipboard sharing and file drag+drop between physical machines controlled with the same keyboard

Clipboard sharing is an absolute must for the Remote Desktop/Server Management stuff I do for most of my day ... That would be a great thing to have. File drag-n-drop would be nice too but I can live with out it. Also might be tricky to code and a bit heavy for UDP communication.

It appears OpenDNS is now classifying the site in the Adware category... (see attachment in previous post)

LOL!  On OT, your warning is a lot better than mine- I might steal it for humor's sake!

I got a kick out of that one myself...The picture totally nails it. Too Perfect!
3721
Okay, this is way to cool to not come up with some way of playing with it ... I just gotta think of something.

How old of an OS will it work with... NT4? OS9? Or will it need to be XP/OSX and above?
3722
I want WP7 to be successful, and actually want a WP7 device.  However, I run into the dual problem of (a) some of the apps I use on my phone daily aren't available on WP7 and (b) I have too much money invested into iOS apps.  My first smartphone was a windows mobile phone, and I have had several since.  I had the same pain when I moved from windows mobile (my last was a Pantech Duo that my daughter only recently upgraded from), and don't relish going through that again.

*sigh*

Look on the bright side, at least you won't need to worry about the store being sold out of them when you get ready to make the jump.
3723
Hmm, shocking that WP7 would work with Exchange and others would have problems? Hehe. Or do you mean just in general?

Both actually, but if you look at Office 2007's track record with the same RPC over HTTP style connection it isn't really a given out of the gate. I got a laptop on the bench now I'm about to either downgrade to 03 or shoot.

@Darwin - Good Man!

I too have run into some of the cronic sales bias against the Windows Phones. Fortunately I have a rather strong bias against sales people...which tends to make them feel bad after I finish expressing it (Tehehe). ;)
3724
So perhaps in summary: Android has higher potential for awesome, iOS has more consistent execution of good-to-awesome. And WP7 doesn't sell enough to matter.

Out of the dozen of us here with smart phones. we have:
One (sales type) with an iPhone that has had to be reminded 3 times in the past 2 months how to find the Exchange server.

Most of the others are running some flavor of Android all of which have had to be flattened at least 5 times in he past 6 months for various reasons, many of which involved getting (to the Exchange server) Email.

And one Odd-Man-Out (me) who insisted on having a Windows (WP7) phone...Just to be an asshole. However, in the above mentioned very same past few months. The Windows Phone has consistantly just worked requiring only a good charging every other day.

So I guess Kewl ain't everything. ;)
