General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on December 13, 2007, 01:38 PM »
I'll install it first, then! I'm not really after any additional functionality beyond displaying the calendar on mouseover...

This feature creep KILLS me because I look for something simple (like the calendar view) and wind up going for something that will balance my chequebook for me while playing an mp3 and ripping a DVD, so I might as start with something that has been recommended to do what I want it to do, and nothing more!

Thanks for interjecting that comment, Aram. You've likely saved me from, well, myself!

Gizmo recommended:

Free:
http://homepage1.nif...locklight/index.html tclocklite
http://fileforum.bet.../detail/1092761816/1 LClock

He notes that he uses http://www.12ghosts..../ghosts/showtime.htm 12Ghosts Showtime, which is shareware ($22)...

Hmm... Right then. Off to download Betaclock and dsclock... Gizmo Richards also recommended a couple of free clocks - I'll have to revisit those, as well (I'm pretty sure the on he was using was shareware, though...).

Anyway, thanks Aram  - I'll post back with my experiences!

Tom - if I'm not mistaken (Ralf?) that's almost a haiku! I'm honoured  :-*

Another attraction has been highlighted elsewhere, but bears repeating: if you have a notebook and have maxed out the RAM and are unable to update the CPU, ezboostr seems to be promising a performance increase. My experience, as highlighted above, is that once you get over the "placebo effect" the performance gains, if any, are negligible and may in fact represent a net loss. Still, I am curious to read more commentary from users more savvy than me. I'll be following developments out of curiousity and bloody-mindedness (READ: my notebook is maxed out with RAM and I can't update the CPU...  ;D).

I'm particularly keen to read the results of Ron Schenone's two week trial.

Too late, Tom! The first test was SQLNotes and was negative (ie none of the edits were there when I started my computer up and opened SQLNotes). The second test with OneNote was positive but fraught with danger! chkdsk popped up on system start and went nuts deleting files and moving things around. When the dust settled explorer.exe crashed soon after my desktop started loading and I had to kill it when it restarted because it hung, freezing my system... The "good news" is that OneNote DID save all of my edits.

In both cases I was typing as I hit the power button on my computer.

CodeTrucker - I tested this only in so far as I opened up both OneNote and SQLNotes and typed in single letters (actually I hit return twice and typed in the letter a) and then shut down the programme without saving anything. When I fired them back up the changes I had made were still there.

I'll take one for the team though (Gulp!) and try hitting the juice button in the middle of typing in both  :o

I received my serial within minutes of submitting the web form. Veign posted about this at 9:37 am PST and I received my key at 9:43 am PST... That is, as I was typing my response to Chris' original post.

Are you using this, Ralf? Just curious... I'm always tempted by alternate clocks (essentially I want a calendar to popup on mouse over of my system tray clock) but being miserly with my system resources I always wind up resenting the overhead and uninstalling them. So... to the second part of my question: if you have run/are running dsclock, what's the overhead like?

General Software Discussion / Re: Are you testing XP SP3 RC ??
« Last post by Darwin on December 13, 2007, 08:46 AM »
Thanks for the link Nosh. This in particular caught my eye (along with what you highlighted above, of course)"

And what about compatibility? Devices running Windows Embedded or Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs will not be able to install SP3. Updates to those OS versions will be available later. And if you're running Windows XP Starter Edition, don't install SP3—you won't be able to log on. But Windows XP Media Center machines, of which there are thousands, raise the biggest concern. The SP3 beta stopped these PCs from receiving Media Center updates (this was certainly the case on my own PC) and often prevented connections to Media Center Extender devices, including the Extender for Xbox. These issues should be addressed by the time Microsoft releases SP3 (the company hasn't commited to a date; my guess would be early 2008), but keep checking PC Magazine for news about the problem being resolved. In particular, if you see a fully public beta download of SP3, check for compatibility before giving it a try.

Just posted this in the thread tomos pointed too, but note (no pun intended) that OneNote and SQLNotes save every keystroke as well.

Yes - lanux is right - if you've tried pasting the serial in perhaps it's time to request another key. I just checked and the offer is still valid. This will probably be quicker than going through support!

Heh, heh - good point Curt. However, Camtasia 3 is a very fine application in its own right, and I see no need to upgrade to version 5.

I *think* what you are reading about with respect to nag screens probably relate to a "commercial use suspected" pop-up that is discussed in this thread on the support forum. There's an older thread on the same topic here.

$10 is an attractive price - DirectAccess is $40. PhraseExpress is not as pretty and not as intuitive as Direct Access but it does seem to be very light on resources. I doubt I'll be switching to it (Honesty check: I'm no longer using ANY launcher, though I have quite a few installed) but I'll leave it installed and will play around with it.

PS PhraseExpress does look similar to DirectAccess. I'm downloading to try it out now.
