Thanks, Tomos. (c:

I guess you wouldn't know it since I listed it as a con, but I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing that a game is actually a toy. There are a number of videogames that are more like toys, where you just have fun playing with something rather than having a set goal or win/lose conditions. A lot of "sandbox" games have goals and conditions, but people just enjoy being able to do whatever they want with the mechanics.

Living Room / Looking for a good non-Logitech keyboard
« Last post by Deozaan on May 01, 2014, 11:16 AM »
I'm in the market for a new keyboard. I was using the K800 which I really, really liked. But every single Logitech device I've purchased in the past decade or so has had significant issues crop up after only 2-3 years of use so I'm done with them as a company. Every single mouse has had issues with double clicking or "letting go" when I was trying to click and drag. And this past weekend one of the keys on my keyboard has suddenly stopped working. A $100 keyboard should last longer than that. And no, I didn't spill anything on it. I'm sick and tired of my Logitech devices failing after only a couple of years (if that long). Grr!

If that's not planned obsolescence then it's sheer incompetence, and I'm not going to support either of them with more money.

So anyway, does anyone have suggestions for a nice keyboard that will last? Some of the things I really liked about the K800 and would like to have again (but are not requirements) are:

1. Quiet keys.
2. Slim (not tall) keys that are easy to press. I can't believe how hard it is to type on a regular keyboard with such tall keys now that my fingers have gotten used to not having to move so much!
3. Backlight.
4. The key labels couldn't rub off because as best as I can tell the key itself is black and the label is laser etched through it or something. Very nice.
5. Wireless. I left my keyboard plugged in 98% of the time, but it was nice to be able to disconnect it occasionally to take to the couch or hand over to someone else near my computer.
6. Full size keyboard with numpad and Function keys.

Some things I didn't like about it:

1. Really the only thing I can think of is that I ran into conflicts when trying to press many keys at once. I'm not a competitive gamer, so it's not super important to me, but there were a few games where I noticed I couldn't use the key combinations I wanted to.

But honestly at this point I'm open to any suggestions.

Please, DC, share your wisdom with me and help me find a good Logitech replacement.

I would like to see what applications don't work on Windows 7/8 that only work on XP. I have yet to run into one. I don't doubt they exist, but in all of my tinkering I have yet to find one.

I have an old game that I like to play occasionally. It's an awesome 4x game called Stars!w with play-by-email feature (made even easier with something like Dropbox to sync the files). Sadly it's a Win 3.1 game so it was only 16-bit which means I can't play it on Windows 7. That's the only thing I've ever had a legitimate use for that had that problem.

I played the game and i thought it was very cool and fun.  Great work!
But i *really* enjoyed the writeup more than anything

Thank you very much! (FYI I've read over my blog post a few times since initially posting it and I've made various minor changes to help the flow/clarity of the thing. I've also added in a new bullet point in the "What went wrong" section.)

And at the end when I say thanks to great friends and family, you were one of the people I was specifically thinking of. Thanks for your support and encouragement, mouser. (c:

Re this line from the writeup:
"I should have been working instead of playing." I think I disagree. If you work on a game and maybe you used those few minutes to fix something technical but suddenly discover at the end of the whole weekend that the result is miserably un-fun to actually play, to me that's the true heartbreak. Also I think playing *is* working because let's say as you are playing you suddenly discover that some aspect is really annoying, to me that's almost like a bug and then maybe you turn down the difficulty, or whatever. I peeked at a couple of older LD games from an earlier event, and I came across a few (that I didn't play) where people commented that the idea was cool but it turned out to be really hard.

Maybe there are some people who like their games tough, but if a game is so hard that I can't even get past the very early parts, I instantly lose interest. To me a more balanced game has a couple of really easy stages, a couple of "just easy" stages, a few medium ones, and then as it warms up it can pour on the difficulty. But if level 2 feels completely impossible, it's not my thing.

I see what you're saying, but what I meant was that obviously I felt the game was fun because I spent several minutes at a time playing around with it when I'd already tested the new changes I'd made. I think it's good to test and make sure the game is fun. But I'd already established that, and I let the "fun-ness" of it distract me from actually developing it because I was having too much fun playing it. I guess what I'm saying is that I spent too much time playing with it, when much of that time could have been put to better use actually developing the game instead.

Something is misbehaving for me and I can't log into the LD site to comment. :  (

I'm not sure if this is the problem you're encountering, but the link under the top banner image pretty much always says "Login" even if you're already logged in. The way to know for sure if you're logged in is if you see the WordPress toolbar on the top of the page.

Here's an image to illustrate what I mean (it's kind of wide, so be sure to scroll to the right to see the whole thing):

What a weekend! I submitted my entry on Monday. I planned to write all about it on Tuesday but after going out to dinner on Monday to celebrate my success, I got super tired almost as soon as I got home, and that tiredness returned on Tuesday and I spent most of my free time just sleeping.

So today I finally wrote up a blog post about the experience, which you can read here:

I don't mind the new look. In fact I think I kind of like it.

What I don't like is how every few seconds the CPU usage spikes up and Firefox becomes unresponsive for a second or two. What's up with that?

Developer's Corner / Ludum Dare 29: April 25-28 Weekend
« Last post by Deozaan on April 25, 2014, 01:38 PM »

First of all, what is Ludum Dare?

Ludum Dare is two similar events taking place over one weekend

The Competition is the familiar “make a game in 48 hours solo competition” that Ludum Dare is known for. Specific details can be found below. After the competition ends, participants are given 3 weeks to play and rate games created by their peers. After those 3 weeks, winners are announced.

The Jam is the new “relaxed” Ludum Dare. It was created to make Ludum Dare even more inclusive. You can work in a team, borrow assets from your other projects, or do things that would normally be against the rules. You also get one extra day, giving you up to 72 hours to submit an entry. This is helpful for those times real life gets in the way, or for games that need just a bit more time to become something great.

Ultimately, our goal with Ludum Dare is to encourage people to sit down and make something. Our hope is that the new structure continues to encourage more and more developers to join us and create a game in a weekend.

Ludum Dare 29 begins today. In about 6.5 hours from the time of this post. I'm planning on trying it out, which means before Monday comes to an end (in my timezone, at least) I should have a new game playable for all of you.

More details can be found here:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/

Join me (us)! Scrap your plans for this weekend and make a game!

I think I misunderstood. It seems like Heroes of Stalingrad is a full game. But there's an expansion called Rising Storm that has a lot of content, but this only contains a demo of it.

You still get the full Heroes of Stalingrad experience, and the rifle content of Rising Storm is a bonus. But the store page is really confusing because they have all the details and sales points of the Game of the Year Edition even though it's not the GoTY edition they're selling on that store page.

All of the above is just speculation because it's really confusing. I'm still not sure if any of this is right.
3637
So it's a demo that you normally have to pay for?

Developer's Corner / How NOT to Sort by Average Rating
« Last post by Deozaan on April 16, 2014, 04:58 PM »
I came across an article today that explains some flaws in commonly used sorting methods, with examples of why they're wrong, and then proposes a nice solution for more accurately sorting the truly higher rated stuff on top.

PROBLEM: You are a web programmer. You have users. Your users rate stuff on your site. You want to put the highest-rated stuff at the top and lowest-rated at the bottom. You need some sort of "score" to sort by.

WRONG SOLUTION #1: Score = (Positive ratings) - (Negative ratings)

Why it is wrong: Suppose one item has 600 positive ratings and 400 negative ratings: 60% positive. Suppose item two has 5,500 positive ratings and 4,500 negative ratings: 55% positive. This algorithm puts item two (score = 1000, but only 55% positive) above item one (score = 200, and 60% positive). WRONG.

Sites that make this mistake: Urban Dictionary

WRONG SOLUTION #2: Score = Average rating = (Positive ratings) / (Total ratings)

Why it is wrong: Average rating works fine if you always have a ton of ratings, but suppose item 1 has 2 positive ratings and 0 negative ratings. Suppose item 2 has 100 positive ratings and 1 negative rating. This algorithm puts item two (tons of positive ratings) below item one (very few positive ratings). WRONG.

Sites that make this mistake: Amazon.com

The article goes on to propose a better method of sorting things by their rating. A method which has even been endorsed by Randall Munroe of xkcd fame, so you know it's good. ;)

Anyway, be sure to read the full article here:

Interesting how one of the reviews is glowingly positive with hardly a mention of any negative aspects of the game, while the other two indicate the game is disturbing in many ways, not fun in a few, and enjoyable in others.

I hope your wrist recovers soon.

I still haven't graduated to the world of tweeting :P

You don't actually need to tweet or have a Twitter account or even know what that Tweeterer thing on those newfangled interwebs is. The bot has its own account and it tweets stuff on its own. I've seen two tweets made about other people. Finally I have proof that other people play my games. :D

(And by "other people" I mean people who don't give me feedback about it or let me know they're playing it. i.e. people who wouldn't otherwise interact with me.)

I often get the impression that the only time anybody plays the games I make is when I show it off to them (in person) or when I post about it here as part of NANY or whatever. But then when NANY is over I feel like nobody who was playing it is still playing it and also that nobody else is discovering it and playing it for the first time. So it's really cool for me to see that twitter bot make tweets about other people playing my games. :)

« Last post by Deozaan on April 14, 2014, 02:35 PM »
I just released a new version of Blasteroids that fixes a couple of things, but also has a fun way to see what other players are doing. I made a Twitter bot that will tweet some basic stats about games being played, like how far someone got when they died, or a new high score, etc.

https://twitter.com/DeozaanGames/

Of course, there's not much there since 1) not many people play my games in the first place and 2) most people who do play my games probably haven't updated to the version with the Twitter bot yet.

Missing link from Apps article above added here to encourage reading: What Happened When One Man Pinged the Whole Internet.

As best as I can tell, that article is almost a year old. And it says "In February last year" which would place the "personal census" he ran in February 2012. Why did he sit on that census for over a year before publishing his results?

Scary, either way.

Reports coming in from unconfirmed sources that the NSA has been utilizing Heartbleed for years.

Of course, I have to say I totally saw this coming. This is the kind of massive security breach that would explain their uncanny ability to get into any system anywhere at any time. A simple exercise in spreading disinformation to seed people's trust in the affected library and cover up the flaw would allow them to preserve it for so many years unnoticed.

Which means that all those people concealing their activities using SSH, Tor, and proxies? Yeah. The NSA was way ahead of them.
-SeraphimLabs (April 11, 2014, 03:21 PM)

And if they allowed this vulnerability to be revealed now, what even better trick do they have up their sleeves? :o

LastPass will check your passwords to see if they're potentially affected by the HeartBleed vulnerability.

Yesterday we informed our community of the Heartbleed OpenSSL bug. In our blog post, we explained how this security issue impacted our service and what our users should know about the situation. We also built a tool to help our users start checking to see if their sites and services had reissued their certificates, so that users would know if it was safe to start updating passwords for those sites: https://lastpass.com/heartbleed

To help our users take action and protect themselves in the wake of Heartbleed, we've added a feature to our Security Check tool. LastPass users can now run the LastPass Security Check to automatically see if any of their stored sites and services were 1) Affected by Heartbleed, and 2) Should update their passwords for those accounts at this time.

The LastPass Security Check can be run from the LastPass Icon menu. Click the LastPass icon in the browser toolbar, click the Tools menu, and select the Security Check.

In the Security Check results, we alert you to sites affected by Heartbleed:
