Living Room / Re: Going Into Frugality Mode -- What are your Tricks and Tips
« Last post by app103 on January 28, 2009, 11:02 PM »
that gives me another idea.. what about a kind of game where family's can challenge each other to see how little they can spend (or how much they can save), and make a kind of game of it.. maybe someone could make a website or program to help keep track of scores or whatever.

Some of us are at an "unfair" advantage...or disadvantage, based on where we live.

I don't think it would be fair to base it on how little you spend, when you consider comparing a single person that lives in a small apartment in rural Nebraska to a family that lives anywhere in northern NJ. (a dump in NJ is more expensive than a mansion in Nebraska)

I also don't think it would be fair to base it on how much you can save, compared to what you previously used to spend, for those like me that couldn't possibly spend much less than they already are.

My family of 3 lives on about $1400/month. That might sound like a lot till you see how it breaks down.
rent$955 (this is actually cheap for where we live)
bus pass (can't afford gas, car insurance, and maintenance
and hubby works quite a distance from home)
$65
phone$30 (can't make this any cheaper than what it already is)
internet$20 (cheapest dsl)
gas & electric$80 (have been trying to trim this, unsuccessfully)
food, medical (no insurance),
pets (2 cats) and all other expenses
$250 (we eat a lot of rice & spaghetti)

At this point in time, there is nothing to set aside for savings (other than a few leftover :two:) and nothing to draw upon in case of unexpected expenses.

Here are my tips

-No car
-No credit card
-No tv  (we have a 5.5" black & white for my hubby, that will be going in the trash in June, when it won't work any more)
-No cable
-No frozen food    (I hope you meant crap like frozen dinners & microwave garbage, and not frozen vegetables bought on sale in huge bulk packs)
-No Starbucks
-No soda
-No crackers, snackers or other cheap forms of food (we make things like our own air popped popcorn, it's really healthy & cheap!)
-No office job(stay freelance so you do not need to drive to work) (does donationware count?)
-Somewhat higher deductible health care plan (do not pay 900$ a month for healthcare)  :tellme: (our healthcare plan is $0, we don't have one. We just tough it out and hope for the best)
-If you drink, drink close to bed time so would not drink alot every night :)  (we don't drink at all)

this should save you at least 1500$ a month

Unplug the TV and cancel the dish, cable, or whatever you are subscribing to. There is plenty of free content online that you can enjoy to replace it. (this saved me over $60/month) Once you get used to living without it, you won't miss it. I certainly don't.

Get rid of all the extras on your phone service that you really do not need or use. Do you need call forwarding, distinct ring, voicemail, etc? Are you really using them enough to justify the costs? Are there replacements that would make more sense, like maybe using an old fashioned answering machine instead of voicemail? (there is no monthly fee for using an answering machine)

Speaking of phones, do you really need both a landline AND a mobile? A lot of people are saving money by dropping their landline and using strictly their mobile.

If you like to read, get and use a library card. Never buy a book you don't plan on reading more than once. Reference books make sense to purchase, fiction does not. Whatever books you do buy, try to get the best deal on them, even buying used books if they are cheaper. Swapping the books you don't want for ones you do, (like on bookmooch) makes sense, too. I know people that are paying a lot more in rent just to house their enormous book collections, because of the need to have extra rooms just to store all those books. If they got rid of the books they are never going to read again, they could move to a smaller cheaper apartment.

There is so much good free music out there that one doesn't need to ever buy another CD for as long as they live. Services like Pandora, Last.fm, and Garageband make it easy to listen to stuff you will actually like, without spending a dime. And last.fm and Garageband are capable of filling your hard drive very quickly with a ton of free MP3's. (I have downloaded almost 15G of free music, close to 3000 songs, since October!)

Learn to sew. Even if you never become good enough at it to make all your own clothing, at the very least you should learn to repair what you have. If you can fix it, why throw it away and buy new? A couple of spools of thread and a pack of needles is a lot cheaper that a whole new wardrobe.

When you buy clothing, go for quality. Buy clothes that will last for many years. And if you buy classic styles, they will be as fashionable today as they were 20 years ago, and still be in style 20 years from now. And don't shun the thrift stores and rummage sales. You can find some real bargains on what would normally be very expensive stuff, for pennies on the dollar, sometimes with the original price tags still on them.

You can substantially cut your electric bill by doing the following:

An empty refrigerator is very expensive to run! Fill the excess space in your refrigerator and freezer with bottles of water. This will keep it colder, longer and reduce the frequency and duration that the compressor has to kick on to keep it at the desired temperature. This single tip can cut the electric bill in half, for some people. Also clean the coils on the back and keep them free of dust.

Start buying your light bulbs by lumens. Wattage tells you how much electricity it will use, but lumens tells you how much light you will get for that electricity. It is possible to buy lower wattage bulbs with the same amount or higher lumens if you compare brands. Use table lamps to light the area of the room you are in with lower wattage bulbs, rather than the ceiling fixture with 6 bulbs that lights the entire room.

Use a clothes line instead of a dryer. I have an extra shower bar in my bathroom that goes across the center of the tub, specifically for hanging wet clothing so they don't drip on the floor. (I prefer not to hang my clothes outside and have them fade from the sunlight and get all full of pollen & pollution)

Use a coffee maker that doesn't have a heating element under the pot and brews the coffee directly into a thermal carafe. This can keep coffee hot for hours without using any extra electricity. Bonus is that it also won't cook your coffee or evaporate it.

Use a non-electric carpet sweeper for quick daily maintenance cleaning and only use the vacuum cleaner once a week or less.

Use that electric blanket only to preheat your bed. Shut it off once you climb under the covers.

Get rid of the screensavers and use power management to shut off the monitor.

And finally, invest in a used copy of The Tightwad Gazette and make it your money saving bible and keep reading it over and over again. The information in its pages can enable anyone that lives below the poverty line to have it all and live like a king (this is not an exaggeration!), so imagine what it can do for you.

Copied from Dephi 6 Help file:

TCustomTreeView.StateImages

Determines which image list to use for state images.

property StateImages: TCustomImageList;

Description

Use StateImages to provide a set of bitmaps that reflect the state of tree view nodes. The state image appears as an additional image to the left of the item's icon.

TCustomImageList is the base class for collections of same-sized images, each of which can be referred to by its index.

Unit

ImgList

Description

Image lists are used to efficiently manage large sets of icons or bitmaps. All images in an image list are contained in a single, wide bitmap in screen device format. An image list may also include a monochrome bitmap that contains masks that are combined with the images to produce a transparent effect such as is common in icons.

last.fm links seem to be working good.

A few more feature requests:

  • Playlist - option to remove dead file entries (for files that no longer exist)
  • Playlist - option to remove duplicate entries - Keep the first entry, remove all other matches (use path to determine this and not tags)
  • Tag editor - clear the <missing> and just leave the box empty so I don't have to clear it to type in the info

Here is the actual proof that it is possble to love a track without actually playing it...

I can go to any random artist's page on the site and on the tracks page, click the options button on any track and select "Love track" without having to play it first.

In fact, I can "love" tracks that I have never heard of and have no intention of ever listening to (why one would do that I have no idea, but it is still possible)

Thank you for the last.fm support. If given the choice between having a way to love tracks or caching, I'll take the little button with the heart on it.

My ears thank you for that delete option, especially when I am going through my latest crop of recommended downloads from last.fm.

One more little feature I'd like to see (sorry to be a pain in the butt):

option to launch minimized (That way I can have it load at startup and not have to have the main window staring at me each time, and just have the minibar & tray icon showing instead)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Modem Blocker!

I think your problem may be related to your settings.

You could try this:

Go to Control Panel> Internet Options

On the Connections tab, select "never dial a connection" and click apply and ok.

That should stop it from automatically dialing out when a request is made. It won't stop applications from trying to access the internet though, but it will fail if they try when you are not already connected. You will have to connect manually when you want a connection.

SNAG-00054.png

This won't stop browser windows from opening, nor will it stop error messages. I am not sure either of those can be prevented effectively without causing a problem somewhere along the line. But at least you can stop the dialing out, which is the really important part of your request.

Living Room / Snake Wrangling for Kids: Learning to Program with Python
« Last post by app103 on January 19, 2009, 06:20 AM »
If you ever wanted to get your kids started with programming and wasn't sure where to find something written for their level, that they would understand, give this one a try.

Snake Wrangling for Kids is a free ebook (CC licensed) specifically written for teaching kids ages 8 and older how to program, using Python.

This one is meant to be printed out and stapled together and given to a child as a gift. (and not necessarily your own child, either)

It comes in 3 different flavors (Mac, Linux, Windows) and 2 different versions (for Python 3 & Python 2).

You might do well to read this part again:

My suggestion is for both BartelsMedia and nagar to keep working on their products to make them the best they can be and as bug free as possible and offer the best support to users as they can. because where one lacks, the other can certainly excel and that will be where the real difference in the applications will be noticeable. Running around chasing each other to bad mouth and complain will only show users that neither product should be considered and a third option would probably be best, one developed by someone with a lot more maturity.

Maybe whatever he does won't really affect your sales in a negative way, but what you do, will.

I think the tooltip on the minibar is lingering way too long. When I move the mouse away from the minibar the tooltip follows my pointer till it gets about halfway down the screen...and this is with me moving the mouse rather slowly.

And is there any way you could save & load settings to remember column order in the playlist? I prefer to see Artist-title-time-album rather than the default artist-album-title-etc, and I have to keep changing it every time I run Trout.

And here is another screenshot for your collection, in a nice purple classic style theme:

SNAG-00048.png

I have a few questions about this allegation of copying:

  • Does BartelsMedia hold a patent on the implementation of any of the features in which there is a claim of copying?
  • Does BartelsMedia mean to suggest that nagar reverse engineered his product in order to discover proprietary secrets to enable him to duplicate the features?
  • Does BartelsMedia mean to claim that nagar stole the source code to his product and used it in his?

If the answer is no, then I don't understand where the issue is.

If he did not infringe on any patents, did not use stolen code, and wrote his own implementation of these features, then he has done nothing wrong.

Having the same keyboard shortcuts for the same purpose as another program isn't stealing. If it were, then only applications created by Microsoft would be allowed to use F1 to display Help. And only 1 game in the whole world would be allowed to use the arrow keys to control direction.

Furthermore, I'd like to call your attention to a post I made awhile back concerning ideas and patents.

There is a reason why the US patent office doesn't allow one to patent ideas and only allows the patenting of the implementation of ideas.

One can have or use the same idea as someone else, but when it comes to the actual implementation they can be different. Unless the source code of both applications are identical for the identical features, then there really wasn't any real copying. There could be major differences in the way it's coded to such a degree that they are actually very far from being anywhere near alike (and it is possible in theory, that the "copy" can actually be much better than the other because of the way it was implemented).

To illustrate my point, I would like to call your attention to ReactOS which aims to duplicate Windows XP without illegally reverse engineering it and infringing on any of Microsoft's rights. It is possible to do this using clean-room design and that is why the project continues to exist.

I would understand if Microsoft became upset about this, but legally they wouldn't have a leg to stand on if it was all done legally and not by stealing code, infringing on patents, etc.

If only 1 application was allowed to have certain features, then most of mouser's screenshot captor's features wouldn't exist, because only 1 screen capture utility would be allowed to exist with certain features.

And along the same line, should mouser follow Bill Gates around and act in the same manner that BartelsMedia has, since many new features in Vista resemble applications he had created? (ok, that was meant to be a joke, but it is still true to a certain degree, even if it is funny)

Developer's Corner / Re: Free Hosting that allows Javascript?

Most free hosts allow javascript. Geocities allows it, and you can upload your own pages. (but they add advertising to them, like most free hosts do).

What you need to do is look for free hosting and not a free journal or blog like MSN Space is.

Try Google or TheFreeSite.

When you have found one you think you might want to sign up for, before you do, Google the name of the company with the words "malware" & "spyware", just to ensure that the host won't be attacking your visitors with nasties (there are many that do!).

Developer's Corner / Re: Tool to convert HTML pages website into a secure EXE
« Last post by app103 on January 16, 2009, 11:02 AM »
Well you aren't going to find your book on some download or torrent site with 1000's of people downloading it every day. It's just not practical for book pirates to create a new account on their machine and install a new copy of Reader every time they want to grab another pirated book to read.

And I am not even sure you could install more than 1 copy on a machine without having to have more than 1 copy of windows too. So it is quite possible that someone having a collection containing 1000 pirated .lit books would have to have 1000 user accounts on their machine, or 1000 copies of Reader installed, or 1000 copies of Windows installed to be able to use them all. Not only that, but it would be really easy to track it down to the source with the email address provided.

And if I remember correctly, there may also be a limit on the number of machines that an email address can be used on with the Reader software, and that after I think 5 uses, you can't use it any more. This would limit the original purchaser to 5 machines, pda's, or whatever, over the course of their lifetime, with the need to repurchase all of their books if they exceeded that. (not too good for the consumer that formats his machine and reinstalls every 6 months!)

The real problem would be using Reader to create audiobooks, using an accessibility option provided in the Reader software for the visually impaired. Or copying & pasting the text to create an unprotected document. But there are controls available in the Pro version of Readerworks so when you create your book you can limit those things, by not allowing copying, printing, audio, etc.

I never registered my copy of Reader and associated it with an email address, since I only deal with things like public domain works that are totally legal to do whatever you please with, CC licensed works, and GFDL. My converting them to .lit means people can read them on their PocketPC's, and as long as I comply with the licenses of the Readerworks software and the books, I am allowed to do that, and distribute them, legally.

Any other copying and conversions I do is for personal use, and only when a .pdf file is in a very old format incompatible with the PDF reader software on my PDA. (it requires pdf files to contain special tags, or it has to be converted, resulting in a pdf file 2-3x the original file size. Converting to .lit keeps the files small)

I also don't have more than 1 user account on my PC. So I have not tested whether you can use it with more than one account/email address easily. I was warned before my first install of Reader NOT to enter an email address unless I was totally sure I wanted to be stuck with that one for life, and not to enter it till I have purchased my first .lit format ebook. I think the warning was due to the 5 machine limit.

A person giving a copy of an ebook to their friend or family member is much less damaging than some of the other sharing that goes on. How many friends could you safely give something registered to your email address before you'd have to worry about it getting out on the web onto a download or torrent site and you getting caught or massive amounts of spam? Once or twice maybe? With each person the risk increases.

And with each friend you give it to, you'd use up one of your 5 installs of Reader. Give one book out to too many people (1 person could be too many), and you will have to repurchase your entire collection. It would be cheaper to just buy your friend a copy.

And we are talking about a book in which the original poster stated that all profits are being donated to a charity. Is this the time to be greedy and worry about losing a little money from the small amount of copying that goes on between friends & family? It would be much more important to control/prevent the mass distribution on download & torrent sites, where the real damage is done to authors.

And here's a bit of food for thought when it comes to DRM and sharing between family & friends:

I could go to a book store and buy a paperback or hardcover book dirt cheap off the clearance table, take it home, read it, and then loan it to a friend who reads it and returns it to me. And I can keep loaning it out until every friend & family member I have has read it.

I can then take that book and sell it on EBay (possibly for more than I paid for it, and thereby making a profit on it) and the buyer of the book can do the same, loaning it to all his friends & family, and then either sell it like I did or donate the book to a library where 1000's more people get to borrow and read it...all without the original author, publisher, or distributor receiving any additional compensation beyond the original discounted purchase price I paid when I bought the book at the book store...AND THAT IS LEGAL.

What I don't understand as a consumer is how anyone can possibly think it's fair to stop me from doing the same with a digital product I have purchased. Why can I not give it away after I have read it or listened to it, like I can with a physical copy? Why are my rights to pass it on when I am finished, or loan it out, or sell it, or donate it to a library, being trampled upon? Why has there not been a way for people to be able to do this, built into any existing DRM scheme yet?

I don't think I would be so against DRM if it were possible for me to do the same with a digital product as I can with the physical version of the same product. And it is for this reason why I will not buy an ebook or an MP3, rather than a physical book or CD. I would be paying the same money but getting less rights, as a consumer.

It's not just the authors, artists, publishers, and distributors that have rights. Consumers do too. DRM only thinks about and addresses the rights of the first group and does not even consider the rights of the second, at all.

@PhilB66:

Does that support password protecting the application against unauthorized use? And does it store data encrypted?

I would hope for security reasons that the answer to both would be "yes". Storing the data in plain text wouldn't be very safe (or smart) with passwords.

Try the IE based portable version of Sleipnir. It uses Roboform2Go to store passwords (need to install that extra option) so it would allow you to take them with you and not leave them behind. It also has its own favorites stored in its own database file within its own folder too.

Both the portable version and the roboform plugin are listed on their downloads page.

(note: gecko plugin does not work with the portable version as expected, and if installed will make Sleipnir no longer portable)

Living Room / PhotoFunia and the Ultimate Cody Sighting

Cody seems to pop up in some of the most unusual places. He has been spotted just about everywhere.

And now, thanks to a really fun site called PhotoFunia, I have been able to create the ultimate collection of Cody sightings and compile them into an amusing screensaver for all Cody fans around the world.

We also have a media pack for mouser's MPQ screensaver engine. (you'll need to have that installed to use it) (thanks Deozaan & mouser!)

Additionally, soon we will have some new Cody related avatars for the forum. (visit your settings to change it)

As a bonus, I have taken a bunch of the avatars and created 2 wallpapers (not sure if they are your screen size, but it fits mine) If you'd like to create your own, I have included 2 packs with all the original images.

So, try out the screensaver, and if you are bored with your current avatar, maybe change it to one of the new ones.

Oh, and grab a photo of yourself or a friend and take it to PhotoFunia to have some fun making your own collection of funny pics. With a face shot of a real human, you can do even more than I was able to do with a picture of Cody.

WARNING: It has been brought to my attention that some of the images could be considered kind of risque and some of them are potentially NSFW, so don't download any of this if you are easily offended, and definately don't install this on the computer at work, school, or church.

This might be a good idea for anyone, whether they have plugins in their browser to view PDF files in-browser or not. One of my favorite browser plugins.

PDF Download

Available for both IE & Firefox, whenever you come across a pdf file, it asks you what to do with it.

options are:
1. view in browser
2. convert and view as html (much better than google's view as html option)
3. download

(it also turns web pages into pdf files, if you want, preserving links quite well)

Indeed - I don't have a use for JS in PDFs, so I might as well do that... except JS can't be turned off in foxit :). Mailing them might be a good idea.

I don't use in-browser PDF anyway, so the exploit would have to be able to download+launch an external file - and it would have to be able to do that in spite of noscript+adblockplus.

What do you mean it can't be turned off? I told you how:

Foxit Reader:

Go to Edit>Preferences>Javascript

uncheck the box
