Living Room / Re: Stumped - can anyone help? Laptop drive issue
« Last post by mouser on June 23, 2017, 10:14 AM »
I decided the best approach was to rip out the disk - plug it into another computer and backup the data before putting it back and doing a factory restore.

Seems like the right approach to me..  Or else plug in an external drive to the laptop and clone the internal hd -- which sounds like what you were trying to do next..

OK I plugged numerous USB drives into the computer and none of them show up in the BIOS or in Paragon - reloading the disk tables doesn't find the USB drives either.

So are you saying that essentially -- your desktop couldn't read the laptop drive when plugged into a usb dock connected to the desktop, AND the laptop refused to see any external usb doc drives?

DcUpdater / Re: DcUpdater fails when checking for updates
« Last post by mouser on June 23, 2017, 05:37 AM »
I think it was just an unlucky case where there were very few posts about this bug and with little details.
For better or worse, this has always been a fairly low-tech site with lots of info scattered everywhere, and the best way to get a good answer is to do what you did and post a question..
Hopefully what we lack in organization and polish we make up for in friendliness.

Hi gjq.. I'm sorry no one has posted a reply to your post yet.. I think this probably requires some specialized  of unreal engine, and you might have better luck on an unreal engine forum..

I find myself in general agreement with f0dder.

  • I prefer tabs over spaces.
  • If the codebase has already adopted spaces, consistency is more important so you have to use spaces.
  • I feel like us tab folks have lost the battle.
  • The idea of using pure indents instead of braces was a terrible decision by python designer.  Better would have been redundant use of brace and indent.

Maybe the location of your file manager exe has changed.
To set it in FARR go to the "External Tools and Plugins" tab and set the location there:

1. Shortcut does not support "WIN" key

Can you elaborate?
When you make a custom hotkey configuration in options you should be able to check the "Win" checkbox to say the hotkey should trigger with windows key.  Let me know if that doesn't work.

2. Windows app such as Calculator or Edge cannot be located

This is at the top of my todo list for the next release..

Living Room / Slashdot asks: How Do You Prepare For The Theft Of Your PC?
« Last post by mouser on June 19, 2017, 01:22 AM »
I currently keep important information on a hidden, encrypted partition so an ordinary thief won't get much off of it, but that is about the extent of my preparation... What would you do? Some sort of beacon to let you know where your stuff is? Remote wipe? Online backup?...

ps.
Turns out that this movie was written and directed by the actor who starred in another violent indie movie that I loved and recommended earlier, called Blue Ruin.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Grab selected region
« Last post by mouser on June 16, 2017, 04:23 PM »
The issue isn't with the high resolution or with windows 10 -- SC will perform properly in these cases.

There are two scenarios where this zoom problem might still happen when doing a selected-region capture with the latest versions of SC.

The main scenario is if you have multiple monitors AND you have a DIFFERENT text scaling magnification set on the different monitors.  That is, in windows 10 you can now set text scaling options differently on one monitor then on another.  This will cause the zoom problem.  Solution is to set both monitors to the same level of text scaling.  Unlikely to be a way for me to fix SC to behave well when they are set differently.

The other scenario can happen even when you have only one monitor, if windows has not broadcast a resolution change message properly.  This should be fixable by temporarily changing the monitor resolution just to get the windows message sent to running applications.

There is another fix for users who have these situations, and that is to go into the Selection Capture Options tab and choose to use "Red Box" mode for both Objects and Regions.  It's not quite a nice a way to capture regions but it should work in these cases because it uses a completely different way of letting you select the region on screen that you want to capture (it overlays a transparent window on top of your live desktop rather than taking a temporary capture of your entire desktop and then drawing on that).

Once again, because it's so close to me, it looks like I will be attending GenCon 2017, the large board game convention, on Aug 17-20 in Indiana.

If any other DonationCoder members are going, send me a message so we can meet up to say hello and play a game or two.

I think just moving the blend mode to the top under the transparency setting and adding a line of explanation would solve the problem.

If I add a comment/caption, then Save Image and Show, then splice out a part of the image with Ctrl+Alt+P, the comment disappears, leaving a white space.

I'll look into it -- what is happening is that the caption is still "there" it's just now it's off screen. since the image shrunk.  The splicing operation does not move objects as it should after a splice.  I will try to fix that.

(you can confirm it's still there just off screen by using the "Edit -> Quick Expand Canvas" action a couple of times).

Not stupid at all -- in fact I really need to add some help on that screen to guide people as I'm sure it's a common confusion.

Hi James.

The answer is yes.
The solution is to modify the BLEND MODE.
Just change the BLEND mode to "Normal" instead of "Multiply".
