Thanks nudone.

Thanks all for the comments - much appreciated.

Just updated the home page image to ensure text is the right way up. Unfortunately clipped the bottom edge in the process very slightly. I'll fix it when I get a moment.

OK I get the message on click to enter ... gone.

Yes I have the rights to use the images.

.htaccess now set to stop directory listings (I think!)

I have set .htaccess in my server root directory to:

Options -Indexes
DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php

## PROTECT FILES ###
<FilesMatch "\.(htaccess|htpasswd|ini|phps|fla|psd|log|sh)$">
  Order Allow,Deny
  Deny from all
</FilesMatch>

Does that look about right? I am not too experienced with .htaccess files.

Thanks Perry - I did use an img tag modification in the end but I seemed to try it numerous times without it working. Maybe it is a cache thing.

It is just in HTML - so few pages to start with meant that CMS was a bit overkill.

I am however working on a PHP/MySQL layout for the future as it will make adding/editing products/more detailed service descriptions/news items and possibly a recommendations page easier to maintain. Whatever I use I want it to be simple.

Thanks nudone for spotting the 'banner' issue - I will change that. AdMuncher doesn't seem to object on my system so it is hard for me to spot things like that. Can you check it again and see if it is fixed (don't forget to refresh the page with shift F5 in IE or FF).

Frustrated ...

I have set:

#container #graphic-link a {
   color: #999966;                              <<<< Background colour
   text-decoration: none;
}

and this works fine in Firefox - but I get a nasty border in Internet Explorer 7.

Changing the border properties to none, 0 pixels,  background colour has no effect.

Setting properties for a:link, a:hover etc. has no effect

Anyone any ideas how to get rid of the nasty box - please ???

Thanks guys for the helful and positive comments.

If I make the sheep active as a link it ends up with a box round it - anyone any idea how to remove that in CSS or Dreamweaver? I looked everywhere fort he option but couldn't find it. Tickling the sheep was my original intention!

Thanks too to cranioscopical for his helpful comments via PM.

My new website is up ... check it out and let me know what you think.

See:

A bit of background - I live in very rural sheep country in the North of England. Most of my clients are going to be locals in the area so I wanted to kee the site pretty simple and a bit 'naive' or even a bit 'folksy' with some humour as I am not trying to pretend to be a high powered international conglomerate. (There is someone in a neighbouring village who describes his one man band as 'international' and the web site makes it sound as though he is running MS or Google rather than from his home - I don't think that helps around here).

Any way constructive criticism welcome (be kind  :-[!) ... I had to get something up and running. I plan to change the Products and Services pages into a more branched structure with more detail on specific ideas I have but I thought this would serve to get me off the ground.

General Software Discussion / Re: XPPro SP3
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 24, 2008, 08:13 PM »
I managed to download it. Did a full backup and installed it fine. No problems that I am aware of - no drivers not recognised and my AV was fine and other startup items and software I have tried. Took about 15 minutes to install but went through without a hitch. I have checked various obvious things:

  • the TaskBar address Toolbar is still removed (as in the release candidates) - shame but I can live with it. You can always use Windows+R instead
  • TCPIP.SYS in SP3 is a different build to SP2 and has the 10 half connection limit as in SP2. The usual hack still works though. I have not noticed any issues using the tool with the new build (see http://www.lvllord.d...=downloads#4226patch)
  • There is a new tab in MSCONFIG called Tools which lists and gives access to lots of useful Windows Tools. Not sure but is this in Vista MSCONFIG (I haven't got Vista switched on at the mo to check)
  • Task Manager has a new Users tab showing currently logged in users. I presume this is new (not seen it before). Presumably if you use User Switching you can use this to logoff usrers that don't need to be logged in any longer without going through Logoff > Logon > Logoff > Login

Tha's all I have so far - haven't noticed anything else different.

Anything else I should be looking for?

General Software Discussion / Re: Xara Xtreme 4 and Pro 4 released
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 24, 2008, 07:13 PM »
I should have added that all the features shown on the video are in the non-Pro version. Unless you have need of the Pro features or already have a Pro version (so the upgrade price difference isn't totally significant) then you may as well stick with the cheaper version.

Having said that I am not sure if the full Flash export function is in non-Pro. Any one testing the non-Pro download that can check this out?

[Edit] There is a feature comparison page at here and Flash generation is included in the non-Pro version [/Edit]

I think the photo editing is much improved by inclusion and the speed with large files is amazing compared with other flagship products such as PhotoShop. OK it isn't PhotoShop but for quick manipulation within a working document it is second to none.

Text flow, I have to agree, is the best new feature - and that fact that with CSS and HTML you can generate webpages with 'bent' text frames is great.

There is also a new Panorama Tool - haven't tried it yet (see the video in my post above for a quick look).

I haven't done enough with it yet to look at the efficiency of the HTML code but given that Xara seems to excel at producing highly efficient and fast software gives me some hope that their HTML engine would be reasonably efficient too. I'll have a play when I get a minute and report back.

I agree that Xara3D isn't the greatest of tools (though it does have its uses) but if you are going to use those features it is great that it is now available within Xtreme rather than importing from another app.

The main thing that strikes me every time with Xara software is that increments are small between versions but there is never a loss of quality and as features are added the app doesn't feal like it is succumbing to feature bloat like so many other products from rival software house.

One further comment on the comparison between Corel Draw and Illustrator - don't forget to compare the price!

Xara Xtreme 4 $89US (upgrade $39 or $59 depending on version)
Xara Xtreme Pro 4 $249 (upgrade $49 or $69).
Corel Draw X4 ($429US, upgrade $199)
Adobe Illustrator CS3 ($600US, upgrade $199).

I have used the Corel and Adobe products in the past (and have Illustrator CS2 installed on my system) but invariably come back to Xara when I want to do something because it is so much faster and much more intuitive than either of the others with excellent built in video tutorials. Even if the feature set isn't as complete as the Adobe or Corel products the software still gives them a close run and is better value - especially for non-pro usage where the pennies count.

Personally I think the small development team have done an amazing job over the last 20 or so years. How many people work on the market leading pro applications in comparison?

General Software Discussion / Xara Xtreme 4 and Pro 4 released
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 24, 2008, 04:37 PM »
OK I know what I said last time round (about never trusting Xara again) but I think this upgrade is interesting, with some great new features. They are doing special upgrade prices from v3.2 to v4 only until 2nd May.

If you want to see some of the new features check out the videos at: http://xara.com/uk/p...reme/tutorials-demos

Look at the "An introduction to Xtreme 4" video (first one in the list).

The commentary is a bit stilted (or downright annoying) but the visual demo is really impressive.

I haven't had time to play with it yet but it looks a really good upgrade and I have to say I am revising my view of Xara - they seem to be hanging in there with a great product and not giving in to the Magix takeover machine that bought them out. I think we all feared that Xara as an identity would disappear in the merger but they seem to be going from strength to strength and the new version looks really good. As far as I can tell the Xara brand is still being run pretty much independently from Hertfordshire in the UK - presumably the Magix link allowed for a different market outlet under a different brand name.

IIRC it was $49 to upgrade 3.2Pro to 4Pro but thanks to DC members it cost me $26 as I still had some commission from when I used to display an affiliate link in my signature. (Thanks to those who bought in the past).

Tell us what you think - I think the new quick photo manipulation and the text wrapping are really neat - and the CSS HTML website WYSIWYG editor looks awesome (why am I learning DreamWeaver when it can be that simple!).

Affiliate Notice
I don't intend to add an affiliate link to my signature again but I have given a link below. Note I am only an affiliate because I really like their software and I am definitely not into the hard sell on this. Judge for yourself. I removed the affiliate link after they were bought by Magix and the version 3.2 upgrade debacle (search for the long thread on that) but now that there has been time for the merger to settle down and things to get back to normal I think I was probably a bit premature to judge.

If anyone wants to place an order for the new versions (or any Xara software) my new business website will be up and running soon and I hope to have a page on Xara stuff by the end of the weekend. It would help my new business startup if you use the affliate link on there to place the order. No pressure though! It isn't there yet but check out www.dalescomputerservices.com over the next few days.

If you can't wait that long you can use:

to place an order. OK you won't get a discount but I will get a bit of commission.  :-*

Remember if you place an order you can download the software immediately but the disc versions and muanuals take a while to arrive (the usual rule of thumb seems to be that the software is RTMed a couple of weeks after they announce the new version and then they let it run for a while so that any bugs can be ironed out before the discs are produced). Having said that the download versions in the past have always been pretty solid and well beta tested prior to release so there shouldn't be any nasty surprises and they work fine so the disc isn't really needed any time soon.

Living Room / Re: Home Network Recommendations?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 24, 2008, 01:07 PM »
I wouldn't forget homeplug electric wiring based options either, especially if you don't want to be running cables. The new home plug units can integrate with a regular network at relatively decent speeds. Their advantage over wireless is that you can use wake-on-lan (just like with cable) to let your server power down when its not in use (no wake-on-lan with wireless). Then you can hide your server someplace out of the way without having to run a cable to wherever that server is.

My WiFi (Netgear) seems to support Wake on LAN - it seems to work too, not that I use it???
3512
True - however if you download a single file by Torrent check your Event Viewer and I bet you find hundreds of 'out of available connections' errors. It definitely slows things down and limits your use of the internet.
3513
Yep that is the patch I mean - it basically patches TCPIP.SYS with a new upper limit on half open connections (you can choose the limit). Works well on SP2 to date though occasionally MS install patches that revert the setting and you have to apply it again.

Incidentally if you have slow or strange internet problems this could be the cause. Espeically if you are doing things like mutliple downloads with lots of browser windows open. Check your system event log as Windows logs that no more connections are available if this situation arises. It's a right PITA and a type MS crappy kludge to shut up the security conscious!
3514
That's what I was wondering.

I have numerous XP discs but unfortunately they are all SP1 or SP2 versions. I never had an original disc.

Anyone know if MS are going to make Windows XP SP3 available in CDROM format? I presume not since they are discontinuing XP production in June.
3515
The only unwanted change I am aware of is that it removes the "Address Bar" toolbar for the TaskBar as it is a apparently a security risk. Personally I do use it so it will be a nuisance. There seems to be a bit of a speed bump reported in the release candidates though whether MS will be cynical enough to ensure that is removed to make Vista seem slower than XP ....

The main thing is it rolls up all previous updates and so if you need to reinstall XP it is much quicker and doesn't mean you spend a day downloading gazillions of updates. Presumably if the update works as advertised ot will also clean up your installation a bit by removing all the earlier included updates from Add/Remove Programs and ensure that they are all installed consistently (there have been some issues in the past where one update applied out of sequence reverts a previous update).

Hopefully they have sorted out the SP2 TCPIP.SYS stupid security fix (ie. limit outgoing TCPIP connections to 10). If not does anyone know if the widely available patch/hack works with SP3 too as without that it makes using Torrents pretty well  impossible?
3516
It's going to be downloadable from MS on the 29th so is there any point downloading a dubious copy from a dubious source ?

Incidentally when it is released can you slipstream it to an SP2 disc or do you need an original XP disc to slipstream?
3517
I did a Google search and found references to Tiny2003 that still work but the only Micro2003 references I seemed to be able to find are dead torrent links.

1. Ver 2.2 is now free and still has all the features that people are moaning about being lost in 3

Evernote 2.2 isn't free - it is still only available on the Evernote website as a 60 day trial and then buy.

I suspect support and development (as well as availability of downloads) of version 2.2 will cease once version 3 leaves the beta stage.

Probably not - I think google likes this site because I have noticed forum messages in the index within hours on google.

Yes that's what I did too. J-Mac was talking earlier about changing his modem though so it would make sense to change it for a Gigabit version if possible.

for those wondering what the habanero savina reference is about

Wicked little beasts aren't they ;) I tried cooking with them once and wasn't really aware of their reputation ... BIG MISTAKE ! The meal was completely inedible as I treated them like normal chillis and bunged a handful in.

Actually the hotest thing I have ever had in my mouth was a Cajun influenced recipe in a small restaurant in Ontario called Psycho Wings. The menu does warn you not to try it if you have a heart condition but I figured it was a joke and I like hot Indian food. I have to say it had no discernible taste (unless you count pain) and I couldn't actually taste anything for about 48 hours afterwards. Unfortunately their website is down for maintenance but you can see a simple front page here. I quite like the flash video and the description.

We had an earthquake in the UK about 6 weeks ago. OK it wasn't like San Francisco but nevertheless it was a very odd sensation. The epicentre was about 150 miles from my house but the whole house vibrated for about 20 seconds. At first I wasn't sure what it was as I had been having a wee drinkie and was half asleep watching TV at 1.30am

Odd sensation - not something I particularly want to experience again - and definitely not something I want to be nearer to.

So 'took out a building' was a buildings network, not the concrete or anything.
