FPGA == supercomputing? O_o

Gothic, how many normal people take on programming? (besides a few "power users" that might do some office scripting). Java != javascript by far, and while both languages might be relatively simple and not as batshit insane as LISP, but they're still programming... which is geeky/nerdy/whatever.

TinyURL and WordPress might not apply, though. Guess I should check the whole list once I get a bit more time :)

Also, who's going to switch to open source if they can't even cope with application incompatibility between XP and Vista.
People who are severely fed up with MS, then get severely fed up with Linux and end up switching back because the darn thing is just too much work :P

Windows 7 RC has been released to MSDN and Technet today.
See here for more information :)

This is bit torrent. At least that is what the program I used resembled quite extensively. The download manager by akami is essentially a bit torrent system. I had 4 seeds on my download
Then where's the .torrent file so I can use a proper client? :)

The akamai java-based client does say it's using X other connections, but that doesn't necessarily mean a p2p protocol (if it was p2p, I would have expected a much higher amount of connections). It's normal for http and ftp downloading to use multiple connections to distribute server load a bit, as well as giving better speeds.

With a .torrent based approach, I could've just dropped to .torrent to my linux box and shut down my workstation... and gotten somewhat better speeds (1.7MB/s here through akamai which isn't bad, but my adsl connection can reach 2MB/s stable with well-seeded torrents).
3507
Ugh, not even a direct download link, akami downloading apple? Come on, MS, get with the times - bittorent!

NoScript is adware.
Nice links, y0himba!

I had wondered a bit at all the advertisements at the noscript site, but didn't care to dig deeper into it. Considering the tactics used, perhaps it's time to dump noscript and look for an alternative :(

Are you saying that LBC will automatically change all these letters according to whatever drive letter gets assigned to the USB?  So, I don't have to do any of the relative path "..\" business?
yes.  and if it doesnt work i will make it work.

General Software Discussion / Re: EU: service prices must include VAT
« Last post by f0dder on May 04, 2009, 08:14 AM »
Is the site (or the store) in the EU? The only EU countries that have a VAT of 25% are Denmark and Sweden. If I am not wrong, any site/store sells with the VAT and obeys the rules of the country in which it resides.
I think Curt's complaint with swreg is that they don't indicate the price with VAT before the final checkout screen - this is a bit misleading.

urlwolf: I've yet to see a reputation/karma/whatever system that really works. Slashdot is a prime example of where it doesn't. On SO it kinda works, but (iirc already mentioned in this thread) there's a tendency for people to make short replies to have a better chance of getting upvoted, whereas a more in-depth thoughtful answer might not get as many upvotes.

And what if you have a participant that only answers a few questions here and there, but does it really well? He wouldn't get a high rep on SO, but his answers might be a lot better than some of the typical rep-whores...

On a positive note, these folks didn't mangle any elements in the original story. Which is more than I can say for Walsh, Boyens, and Jackson. (I'm still irked by what they did to several key plot points and story elements in the New Line Cinema release - and I don't buy their reasons for why they believed such changes were necessary. >:( )
Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way - people usually try to tell me off with "a movie adaptation can't follow the book by the letter", "you're just grumpy" et cetera. Well, sure, I didn't expect a by-the-letter adaptation (duh!), but some of the changes are just... reason enough to plant an axe somewhere fleshy.

Hollow, what's the modus operandi for your wiper? Simply opening \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEx: and WriteFile to that handle? If that's the case, then:

1) how are you able to wipe the system disk? you probably aren't going to load new apps while wiping your system partition, but stuff like pagefile or registry access...?
2) don't worry about malware uses, they already know how to cause mischief :)

Those links don't seem to work here. Perhaps the "&key=blabla" part is bound to cookies, session, ip or something?

So, I never thought I'd say this, but are Microsoft actually getting it right?
Obviously depends on who you ask ;)

Their systems work pretty darn well for many people, even if not perfect (but neither is anything else). If we look aside from the company and politics, yes, I do believe they're getting things right.

Perhaps I'm dull, but I can't find the Throttle in the tested drives on that link? Anyway, USB2 would impose a max limit of "somewhat less than 60MB/s" because of the protocol. If the drive claims to 90MB/s but doesn't come close to 60MB/s with USB2, I sincerely doubt that eSATA helps.

4wd: cute - are there any reliable & thorough reviews of it, though? I'm a bit skeptical wrt. the relatively high speeds and affordable price.

cmpm: it could be that this is a legitimate request, at least I don't get the typical indicative google hits :)

It might seem as a bit weird request since Quick Tray is still available, but perhaps the poster feels that $8 is a little too much for something that could be implemented in an hour in AHK.

But of course, it could be yet one of those post-and-edit-with-spam-links threads, guess we'll have to wait and see...

40hz: that probably works the same way as the SDelete SysInternals' tool - allocating a "damn big file", then a bunch of smaller files in an attempt to use all free space on the disk. The method isn't 100% perfect though, as a little filesystem metadata can be left intact. And of course there's the issue of wiping the registry, which can contain enough sensitive information...
3524
Curt, you have some of the weirdest computer problems :)
3525
@f0dder: in ubuntu, one sudo leaves you with admin rights for a few mins. So you can install a bunch of stuff with one authentification. In windows server 2008, every new thing you want to install will ask you for a passwd. It adds up.
And 'sudo bash' gives you an entire session to root around in (pun intended)...
You can start a shell with administrative privileges on Windows as well :) - I guess the biggest deficiency is that you can't (through the use existing tools, anyway) say "give my user full admin+UAC rights for X minutes", which could be useful when dealing with control panel stuff (Win7's "control panel doesn't need UAC" UAC-level turned out to be insecure).

If you need to install a whole bunch of stuff (how often do you need that besides system install time?), couldn't you just either
1) log in with an administrative account
2) start a cmd.exe shell with admin privs and launch the installers from there

?
