Thank you, nitrix-ud. I admit I'm too lazy to learn and use AutoHotKey and I think it's a bit overkill for my needs. Instead, I'm using HotkeyP, which is much simpler to use, I believe. Just before reading your reply I managed to do exactly the same you suggested (but for the Break key). And HotkeyP successfully disabled CapsLock's original function, so everything is solved for me!
352
I'm already using TapTap on the laptop, but I had to disable it on my desktop because of frequent collisions with PhraseExpress.
353
On my new Dell Inspiron 1720 the Break key has to be typed as Fn-F12, which is not very handy.

I'd like to use CapsLock key, as I almost don't use it otherwise, and this is possible in FARR. However, FARR should disable its original function, because when invoking FARR using CapsLock, all subsequent characters typed are in upper case.

Would this be possible, mouser? (Something like Enso does.) Thanks!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FarrUninstall plugin - v1.02

Exactly the same here on my new Vista Business laptop (just CPU is at 50 % because it's a dual-core). On XP it works smoothly. Any ideas?

(FARR 2.00.145, FarrUninstall 1.02)

Congratulations.. now buy him a computer.

Thanks to all of you for congratulations, everything is fine here. Actually, my wife got a new laptop yesterday. It came with a congenital defect called Vista, but anyway it's terrific. So, I'm afraid you could see me soon lying like the boy on the picture...

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: SecureZip by PK Zip Free License

To allen:

From the first page of ZTree site:
Flexible support of external archiving utilities to allow the management of ARJ, CAB, LHA, JAR, RAR and ZIP archives, to name a few

You can even add your special or future archivers (see ARCHIVER.BB2 in your ZTree folder), but you don't have to, there are plenty configured by default, provided you have the external programs (PKZIP for example) somewhere on your path. (Press Alt-F5 on an archive to view/decompress, or Ctrl-F5 on tagged files to create a new archive.)

ZTree requires, but fully deserves, some time to learn. This investment will pay off!

Thanks for the heads up! Finally I have an archive manager which is not bloated, done professionally, and has decent icons and standard Windows appearance, which seems to be quite rare otherwise. Also, the Explorer view style is sometimes useful. I'm just missing 7-zip format support, some people are using it. (Frankly, I'm using ZTree for managing all archive types, but sometimes the drag & drop and other GUI features can help.)

When using mouse, I prefer Pitaschio, where you can define for example wheel-click or right-click on the title bar to do this (or many others) operation.

When using keyboard, I suggest using HotkeyP or HotKeyz to define "minimize to tray" command to virtually any key combination or multimedia key.

To conclude my introduction and as I promissed, I'm pleased to announce birth of our son Nathaniel today at 2:50 AM. Everything is okay, and he's absolutely gorgeous!

General Software Discussion / Re: Can't open old CorelDraw (v4?) file - help please!
« Last post by yksyks on February 18, 2008, 12:56 PM »
Sorry, I tried, but to no avail. Adobe Illustrator CS2 refused to open it (no surprise), and CorelDraw 10 simply crashed. I was just able to see a small preview of the drawing, so the file is probably not damaged. Maybe some really authentic version of CorelDraw would help.
361
I ceased to use it for the reason explained here. I realized that it doesn't bring much to my style of work, but the taskbar reordering is an obstruction.

Mouser, wishing you early recovery!
363
Oh, this was a misunderstanding. I understood it in the sense of the thread name, so I expected the DK Finder is a desktop search program, that is, it indexes and searches the contents of files. It doesn't apparently. It belongs more to locate32 or ScanFS rank. My first impression is that the "Content filter" searches the files in real-time, not from index, which is obviously very slow. This works good if you want to limit your search and you know at least part of a filename, but searching the whole disk to find an unknown file with a required expression could take hours.

Having realized this it seems to be good, I'll give it some time. In a given context the NEAR operator doesn't apply here, but the reg-ex would be still good.

Maybe this would be answer to alxwz's request.
364
Thanks mouser, sure I will! Hope you're feeling better now.
365
Thank you, Curt. I'll give it a try, provided I find some spare time, which is unlikely, though. Yes, I overlooked the E-mails item, but for the others I'm skeptic. It's a pity there is no feature list on the site.

NEAR operator finds two words close to each other, separated by usually 8 or 10 other words, and in any order. Inevitable, if you need to find for example an expression like "Harvey Lewis". In the documents he may be listed as "Lewis, Harvey", or even "Harvey Spencer Lewis". Using OR operator doesn't help, there may be dozens of other Harveys and Lewises, and exact phrase wouldn't help here, but the NEAR operator will do.

Reg-ex means regular expression.

Copernic's latest versions utilize NEAR operator, Exalead uses both NEAR and reg-ex.

Regarding my 100th post I introduced myself on that occasion and that's enough.
366
Thank you both! Nothing yet this morning... I'll keep you informed.

Darwin--I noticed you're living in Courtenay, BC, where I was some eight years ago and spent some nice moments in Atlas cafe, if I recall it correctly. Does it still exist?

You're right, one would expect it at least under the "Tab" tab, let alone the wording... But for me it's an inevitable feature.
368
Curt, could you give some more details about DK Finder? I failed in finding info like:

  • does it index PDF?
  • does it index mail?
  • does it use NEAR operator?
  • does it use reg-ex?

I'm afraid none of these... And I need them all. If I'm right I'm gonna stick at my current choice--Exalead one:desktop, despite my complaints. Or, when I get really fed up, back to Copernic.

On the occasion of my 100th post I dare to introduce myself briefly.

Born 1954 in Praha (former Czechoslovakia), graduated at the Czech Technical University, later working in a research institute on one of the first musical analog synthesizer in this region, later switched to computers. Started with CP/M with 56 kB of RAM (does anybody remember?), but ceased all coding efforts when Windows came. Now I consider myself an “advanced” user, working mostly in typography and typesetting rank, often helping friends with optimizing and fixing their systems and beta-testing. Occasionally I’m designing some simple web pages.

Also a musician (keyboards), played jazz for some years, spent 12 years in a prominent musical theater in Praha.

Married for the second time, expecting my first son birth probably tomorrow--keep fingers crossed, please! (I already have two daughters, but as the saying goes--I was so generous that I provided each of my children with theirs own mother.)

My principal job has nothing in common with computers; I’m a CEO of one world-wide traditional esoteric (but non-religious) fraternity. In no way I’m going to advertise it here; those really inquiring can click below. Anyway, I’m sitting at my PC with two large old CRT monitors all day long... There are four computers running in the house all the time (Windows 2000 and XP).

Living in suburb of Praha, Czech Republic, with my wife, two dogs and one tomcat. But in a few days we'll be one more here! For those interested in my silly nick, here’s an explanation.
boring short story
When I subscribed to Skype for the first time some years ago, I made up a “witty” nick of “yks”. If you read it backwards and translate to Czech, you’ll get the word “nebe”. If you read it backward again, you’ll get my real name. Alas, this nick was already taken, so I changed it to the current one, and it’s still here. My first name is Michal, and now you can see what my avatar logo means.

I’m really happy to have come across this forum—so far the only one, where people don’t argue and attack each other, but help each other and share brilliant ideas. Thanks a lot to you all for being here, and the coders first and foremost! Let me take a deep bow.

Thank you for reading and please forgive my English peccadilloes. (Moderators, feel free to correct as many as you wish, but let me know just to avoid them next time. Maybe shortening this post would be a good idea, too.)

To avoid re-encoding you can use copy and paste in mp3DirectCut. You can open multiple instances of it at once. Very fast, the quality is maintained, of course. It's freeware.

To the page file usage tweaks on XP et al. I found this:

http://www.opentechs...ve/topic/7124-1.html (see the last post)
and

So far I didn't dare to experiment with this. Anyone more brave?

There's no ultimate solution, I'm afraid. As I complained before, the batch file I'm using works, but the setting gets lost after a while. I was not able to catch the culprit, but while monitoring the ForegroundLockTimeout value I noticed that TweakUI tries to reach this variable on one more location with "not found" result. So I created this value in registry and added appropriate line to my startup batch file. I don't know exactly what does this mean, however, the result is not bad--so far the setting was not rewritten!
REG ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v ForegroundLockTimeout /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00030d40 /f
REG ADD "HKU\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop" /v ForegroundLockTimeout /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00030d40 /f
REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop" /v ForegroundLockTimeout /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00030d40 /f
The other thing is that not all applications behave decently and respect these settings, but this is another story. Enjoy and let me know if it works for you, too.

Or another free alternative to ClickWhen: Delayed Click, which doesn't restore minimized applications, but can trigger the click depending of appearance/disappearance of a window caption.
