Just to give some background:
computer HDD and main backup drive both gave up the ghost a while back.
I'm cobbling files together from various incomplete backups.

I notice with photos that some are more recent versions with different file sizes. This possibly from e.g. rotating in Dopus (and saving rotation) but with many files I can see no reason for the different modified date / size. So if anything I want to overwrite the newer with the older version. (FWIW this does not seem to be an option either in Syncovery.)

But it's such a mess I just want to get the same folder structure on both sides, then I can look at the dates closer.

EDIT// REQUEST #2:
what I need with the dates is the ability to replace newer files with older. This not an option with Syncovery or Dopus...

Isn't that just overwrite no matter what? That's an option.

I think a lot of this relates to the direction the developers want to take the application. I haven't seen any indication that they want to make it a general purpose application.

I'm not sure. I agree it's not their own intent, but they do follow users and are very open to almost anything being done with plugins and frequently consider extending the API to make some plugins possible. But how much can reasonably be done via plugins I have no idea.

Oh, I'd agree if it can be done via plugin they'd make it possible to be done that way. I was just talking about core intent. The way I'm using VS Code right now isn't MS's intent. However, it's made possible by extensions. And they've shown that they are open to including particularly useful functionality from extensions in the core app.

Interesting article comparing NFTs to DRM - https://copyrightand...drm-by-another-name/

This part was especially interesting to someone like me who just knows the basics:

The winner of that auction at Christie’s last week, who goes by the pseudonym Metakovan, no more owns that pile of bits by the digital artist Beeple than I own the ebooks that I got from Amazon. I can read the ebooks on my laptop and my phone (and my Kindle reader, if I could find it in my closet), but I couldn’t read them on my Nook or Kobo (if I had either). I can’t resell, give away, or rent them; even if I were to hack the DRM, I’d be violating Amazon’s terms of service.

Metakovan can view the Beeple artwork on any device that will display JPEGs. But in a sense, he can’t alienate the work either, because it’s already available to everyone in exactly the same format as it is to him. He can’t lend or rent the NFT, because the NFT platform doesn’t support those operations (though it could). He can resell the NFT, but then he doesn’t get to keep all the revenue from the resale–commissions go back to both the artist and the NFT platform and/or auction house. (Resale royalties to artists for physical art objects are mandated by law in many countries, but not in the U.S.) It’s not clear whether he can give the NFT away (i.e., resell it for $0) or leave it to his children to inherit.

In neither the NFT nor DRM cases do buyers get the same bundle of rights that are guaranteed for a physical object in copyright law. In both cases a single private entity controls and benefits from the process in perpetuity, whereas no private entity is involved–or is even allowed by law to be involved–after someone purchases a physical copyrighted work.

In a twitter thread, an interesting comparison is also posed about this particular form of ownership by Matt Levine of Bloomberg:

https://twitter.com/...784691029180425?s=20

NFTs are a new form of tradable ostentation rather than a new form of tradable ownership.

Obsidian would expand to be a more general system-of-plaintext-notes editor/viewer. Compare to how VS Code is an editor/viewer for code in different programming languages. That ties in with our previous discussions here for/against the markdown format(s) and alternatives to it.

I think a lot of this relates to the direction the developers want to take the application. I haven't seen any indication that they want to make it a general purpose application.

To me, this article, and its line of thinking, come across as moral panic akin to "rock music is evil" by people who don't understand (or like?) new things. Especially because the people involved in that article seem to think that NFTs exist only on Ethereum where minting them is (currently) very expensive in terms of both electricity and cryptocurrency. But I just sit back in bemusement and think of the adage "a fool and his money are soon parted."

To add to this, the fact that there are costs associated with 'minting' NFTs and that people are doing it for the most superfluous of reasons seems to be the primary reasons for naming it a pyramid scheme, which seems disingenuous at best, in all honesty. There are no get rich quick schemes, and NFTs are no exception to that rule.

Right now I'm taking some classes in Unity to get up to speed, then I guess I'll take a look there.

I've been increasingly unhappy with the direction Unity is taking over the years. Admittedly, my PC is getting long in the tooth, coming up on its 10th birthday this year. But despite the fact that virtually everything else I do on this machine feels like it runs pretty much as well as it did when the PC was new, it feels to me like Unity is getting more bloated and sluggish and buggy as the years go by. And that's despite the fact that they announced a few years ago that their focus would be on giving Unity "performance by default." I'll resist the temptation to rant on the subject further and just say that my increasing displeasure with Unity is why I started looking into other options and decided to give Godot a try.

The only reason I'm looking at Unity first is because I bought a humble bundle with some classes in it. I think Godot will be more like what I'm looking for, but knowing Unity has no real downsides other than the time it takes.

General Software Discussion / Re: Deozaan's Simple Text Editor

This is designed for plaintext only. But it probably shouldn't crash when an unsupported format is loaded. Upon further investigation, it looks like I made a mistake in attempting to gracefully handle errors when loading files. It was confusing because printing the error (which is an integer) to the debug log will automatically convert it to a string. But I attempted to add a more helpful message to the log and concatenate the error to the message, not realizing that string concatenation doesn't automatically cast the integers to strings.

Can you limit the extensions to *.txt only? That's a clear sign that it's a text editor for the purposes of this small test, since you didn't really intend it for anything.

Seems like you have the basis of something in your RaptureReplica. It seems like it would be out of place in ScreenshotCaptor, personally.

I moved your post here since this is really an EARLY 2022 NANY not a NANY 2021.

Maybe that should get you to make a NANY 2022 area?  ;D

That's cool! I've been meaning to look at Godot. Right now I'm taking some classes in Unity to get up to speed, then I guess I'll take a look there. But your non-game projects have me really interested in Godot now.

The good news for users of Ethereum is that they are taking steps to transition to proof of stake.

For anyone that didn't know what Proof of Stake was, I did the research for you as I didn't know either.

So how long has it been since techsupportalert started pushing full-page popup ads, did I miss the start or is this new?

[ Invalid Attachment ]

Does not make me want to revisit.   :o

Guys and Rhiannon have taken over the site and have to push ads because otherwise the site will shut down due to lack of funding (in less than 5 months or so).

There's ads and there's that thing. No matter how much they need money, that kind of ad isn't right.

Uh, what menu?  What do you happen to be talking about?

Considering the fact that it's in LBC, I just figured the OP meant the items in LBC.

I've started to combine a new editor with my VS Code workflow - Deepdwn (https://billiam.itch.io/deepdwn). I love the way that it uses YAML to categorize and tag the content, and they work well together. The only thing that doesn't like the combination is markdownlint, but I just turned off the offending rule.

Hi guys. I started learning how to edit videos and now I have the need to download audio from one video from YouTube. Who knows if you can download only the audio track?

You can use 4K YouTube to MP3 if you can get it to work. I haven't been having the problems with 4K that others in this thread report they are having.

Yaydl also has the option to just download the audio track, and it worked splendidly for me.

I just found something new- but I'm not sure about its practical use for me - https://orgmode.org/

It's primarily for organization to create a living document. It's more of a note-taking language for technical purposes, with formatting and such a second-class citizen. It reminds me of Jupyter notebooks. As I use my Zettel to format and track my blog posts, I think it wouldn't work for me. It has features that make me tempted to try it out, though.

There's an extension for Visual Studio: https://marketplace....me=tootone.org-mode- source at https://github.com/v...mode/vscode-org-mode, but it doesn't seem to have the primary power of Org-mode (blocks, code execution, macros, etc).

I'm really not up on going back to EMACS, so perhaps this is a non-starter.

I am a bit disappointed that no one suggested a KVM switch.

I think this is the cheapest and easiest solution with almost no latency. I am not sure why no one knew about that.

This is the reason that you've been advised several times to do your research first on your own.  Only you will know the full parameters of what will work for you, and people are likely to dismiss things that might be perfect for you, simply because they're not you.

Mortal

Pretty decent retelling of Norse myths from a more thriller perspective.  Reminded me of Ragnarok

Outside the Wire

Medium-rate action flick with a heavy handed but not especially well written morality message baked in.  Decent action, though nothing that really enforces the fact that he's superhuman.  Training day wannabe.

I do have a soldering iron. I'm almost completely inexperienced with soldering, but I have replaced a couple of microswitches in my computer mice a few times.

If you want to get familiar again before trying on your actual parts, there are a few kits on there. I used to pick them up to hone my skills when there was a lapse in my soldering. And they make cool gifts. :)
