General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for XP
« Last post by Nighted on April 02, 2007, 03:47 PM »
Well, if WDS is anything like google desktop search, then it is limited to how many files it can index. If it doesn't index everything (google couldn't even come close on my machine, and massive index files as well) then you aren't going to find what you're looking for. Period.

That's strange they don't have a decent app like ATI Tray Tools for nvidia cards.

Why anyone would use this, I have no clue. Unless having that search box on your taskbar is somehow indispensable...

Get Locate and use the -r switch with something like SlickRun or FARR and you'll be happier than you were before. ;)
Also, choose when, and how often it indexes.

I should mention that to index about a terabyte of data takes only a couple minutes.

Get Locate instead.

I use ATI Tray Tools myself, I don't have an nvidia card but RivaTuner may let you change resolution from the tray icon if it's similar.

Virus Scanners can slow down any moving/copying of files significantly. This could compound the problem.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: SlickRun
« Last post by Nighted on March 28, 2007, 06:48 AM »
SlickRun 4.0 is in development, but Eric has been updating the current version lately.

There is now a $D$ macro that is replaced with whatever drive SlickRun is running from. This makes an indispensable portable app even more so. You can type "ww definition" and that word will show up in WordWeb if you have SlickRun configured correctly. I also use it with Locate using ""find".

I'm sure the others are good, but SlickRun does everything I want it to do.

General Software Discussion / Re: Lightweight alternatives to FeedDemon
« Last post by Nighted on March 27, 2007, 06:59 PM »
Just checked out GreatNews. It's only been a couple minutes, but it has some of the great features of RSSOwl with the Java dependencies. Also has the full view style of Feedreader.

Impressed so far.....except for the options tabs...when you click around on them, some of them disappear!!!

Feed Reader

Feed Reader has a cool layout the lets you view all news from one catagory on one page with all graphics...pretty cool. It also has a portable install option.

Welcome chinablue32uk!  :)

Starter is the best for me. The biggest feature is that you can add new programs to start by choosing from running processes. Very easy to use and tons of features and FREE!!!

Use this in unison with Startup Guard (also FREE!!!) and there's really no reason to look elsewhere (for me anyway :) )

Why not just capture then create a contact sheet of all the captures....sounds simpler to me...

Maybe I don't get it though!

An excellent freeware program for PDF image extraction: PDF Image Extraction Wizard

The shareware ones I've seen aren't worth the money for something you can do in Acrobat already if you have it.

Be aware that images archived in PDF files are damaged after extraction...you will not notice this in any viewer except ACDSee, which will show white parts in a messy red way. Can't quite explain it. I'll post a screenshot in a few minutes. Later...Ok, using the newest version of ACDSee doesn't produce this anymore...I suppose they were aware of it and fixed it.

General Software Discussion / InfraRecorder: Decent Lightweight Burner
« Last post by Nighted on March 22, 2007, 01:09 PM »
I was looking for a lightweight alternative to Nero that supports importing of sessions (other than Cheetah which is a bit TOO light). I found InfraRecorder. Here's some features as described on the site:

    * Create custom data, audio and mixed-mode projects and record them to physical discs as well as disc images.
    * Supports recording to dual-layer DVDs.
    * Blank (erase) rewritable discs using four different methods.
    * Record disc images (ISO and BIN/CUE).
    * Fixate discs (write lead-out information to prevent further data from beeing added to the disc).
    * Scan the SCSI/IDE bus for devices and collect information about their capabilities.
    * Create disc copies, on the fly and using a temporary disc image.
    * Import session data from multi-session discs and add more sessions to them.
    * Display disc information.
    * Save audio and data tracks to files (.wav, .wma, .ogg, .mp3 and .iso).

I haven't fully tested it out yet but it does look decent.
I should mention that it requires no install, just extract and it's ready to go.

Yeah, and if you are still using SD-RAM then you definitely don't have a PCI express slot.

Take a good look at this, it will show you exactly what you have and then you'll know what kind of card to go buy. Let me know before you install a new card though as it's best to backup and then remove all your old video drivers before installing the new hardware and drivers.
