Living Room / Re: webcam + monitor = tablet pc?

that is one idea, but I'm a poor jobless hobo, so that is a little on the expensive side for me. If I had the cash, I might go with that solution.

Living Room / webcam + monitor = tablet pc?
« Last post by nite_monkey on January 12, 2009, 07:12 PM »
I have no clue if this would be possible, but it would be pretty cool if there were a way to point a camera up close at your screen and then have a program register where you are pointing, and then move the mouse pointer to that spot. I guess you could then use keyboard shortcuts or something for mouse keys. The closest thing I have to this is an actual tablet. I like it, but I would like something similar to a tablet laptop or tablet monitor.

edit: I know there is this post
but Umouse isn't available to download, and the vmouse is source code only, and I am not a programmer (unless AHK counts)

I just read the FAQ page, and xp users are SOL  :( They aren't going to support xp until the stupid vista version is fully working, because
Cairo will fully support Microsoft Windows Vista at the time of release. Support for Windows XP will not begin until the Vista version is complete and relatively bug free. The rationale behind this decision was due in part that Vista is a newer operating system and is the environment of choice for future software development and compatibility.

Living Room / Re: Thumb trackball wanted

I would say if you had a laptop that you moved around the house - like to the recliner in front of the TV - you might want to retain your favorite mousing device without fooling around with a cord.  Other than that.....?
...I never thought about that
Now I just need my current mouse to hurry up and die on me so that I can have a better excuse to buy a thumb trackball mouse.

Living Room / Re: Grey desktop - how to?
« Last post by nite_monkey on November 20, 2008, 09:41 PM »
goto the display settings (ati- catalyst control center\ nvidia- nvidia control panel) and goto the color settings, and in the ati panel there is an option to change the saturation, which will make it grayscale if you put it all the way to the left. I can't remember what all is in the nvidia control panel, because when I was using a nvidia card I almost never used the control panel

But I too am curious as to why you want to do this.

I wish I had a thumb tackball. I tried to use one that had the ball in the center, but I did't like it. I need my scroll wheel. when I buy a new mouse I will defently have to see if I can find one of the logitech ones.

edit: I have one question though. Why would you need a cordless trackball? The only reason I could think of needing a wireless mouse is because the cable gets tangled up, and when you are moving the mouse around, it will only go so far, so you have to yank on it. With that said, a trackball almost never moves from its current spot, so I don't see what the cordless trackballs are needed for.

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you launch stuff?
« Last post by nite_monkey on November 01, 2008, 07:46 PM »
The way I launch apps is I have a folder on my d drive that I put a shortcut to my programs that I want to launch, and I name the shortcut ~appname. I then have that shortcut folder added to the path environment variables so that I can just hit win + r and type ~appname into the run dialog and my program opens

I think you still might want to contact Microsoft. There may be an 'unpublished' hotfix available for people that report the problem you're having. This type of hotfix will not be found in the downloads section of MSoft's website. You need to report the problem to get this type of patch - assuming one is available.

I have never actually reported anything before, where would I go to do that?

nite_monkey, wild shot here, but... have you enabled the "allow remote connections thing" that's located "somewhere in system properties"? It's not enabled by default... ought to give a different error code if this was the problem, but you never know...
I have remote desktop running.
In my first post, thats what I meant, I have the allow remote connections enabled.

I will go check out that forum post and see what I can come up with.

edit: lol, that post said to add the network service user to the admin's group, funny thing is, I ran across that and have already tried that. That didn't help either.

I didn't find anything that looked out of place with that program, and the Resolve button is grayed out, so I don't know what the deal is. I would really rather not have to reinstall sp1, but if everything else fails, I guess I could try that. :(

edit:well thats just weird! I went to the forums you posted, and I typed in that error code that I had in the event viewer, and every post that I went to, the error code was given because their copy of windows was invalid, but my computer says that it is activated, and is valid...

I never installed sp1, it came installed with the OS.
I also didn't do anything with the windows firewall, because it is set to allow terminal services, but just to be sure, I am going to disable it right quick and see what happens.

edit:turning windows firewall off didn't do anything to fix it.

I don't really have a use for fake telnet servers, because that won't fix my remote desktop problem, anyways, on with the previous post. I have windows vista activated, and validated, and it still won't work. I haven't looked in the event log yet to see if the error changed since I validated, so I will do that as soon as I get home.

I don't think I have ever validated my windows yet, I've only activated it, unless activating it validates it, which I don't think it would, since it doesn't in xp. I will go do that real quick.

1.the error message is on the host machine, because it says it can't start the service (which is listed as started in the services list)
Exact error:
Source~TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager
Event ID~1048
Error Message~Terminal Service start failed. The relevant status code was Error: 0xc004f012.

2.Yes, I can ping myself, and all the other computers in the house can ping my computer, and access the network shares I have.

3.Yes, that is what I was using.

(BTW:BTW: I only used telnet, because almost every post I found on google said to telnet into the computer, and my brother who is a computer technition said that if the remote desktop was working, then a telnet client would connect, and all you would see is a blank screen)

Living Room / Help with vista business remote desktop
« Last post by nite_monkey on October 06, 2008, 08:10 PM »
I can't get the blasted remote desktop to work with vista business sp1.
I have the correct services running.
I have remote desktop running.
I CAN'T telnet into port 3389.
netstat shows that the computer isn't listening on port 3389
and in the registry, remote desktop is set to listen on 3389

under the Event Viewer, I get:
Terminal Service start failed. The relevant status code was Error: 0xc004f012.

I would really like some help with this if anyone can help me here.

I've solved the problem, chrome doesn't have a plugin support for vlc, so I just had to copy the dll files from vlc over to chrome's folder, and it worked. I was trying to watch an episode of tekzilla.
373
I love the google chrome browser, but I can't get it to play avi files. I says that some dll files are missing, but I can't find anywhere to download them.
If someone has gotten video files to play in chrome and could help me out, that would be great.

The dll files that it needs are:
libfreetype-6.dll
libxml2-2.dll
libz-1-2.dll

edit:I found two of them in my vlc folder, and I found a website to make a plugin or something of vlc for chrome, I will see if it works
edit2:The plugin didn't work, but I found all but one dll file in the vlc folder, and the other one I was able to download from a free dll site, and now video files play.

Jedi window dock might work for what you are looking for. You can open multiple copies of the program, and then put winamp,chrome/ff, and calculator in one instance of the program, and then put word, outlook, and something else in the other, then just switch through the programs inside the jedi docks
