it's always nice to meet another 2xl fan ( hey i need to add some 2xl icons to the smiley page  )

quick comment about donations - there are no specific amounts we ask for regarding donations, we just ask that people consider taking the time to make a donation, as they see fit.

but let me say, that i'd much rather have a donation of your time in digitizing some more tapes than a monetary donation any day.  It would be so great to get some more tapes available.  see my other post on finding more 2xl tapes and 2xls himself on ebay.

if you feel like doing it, pick a tape and figure out (i see you read my guidelines) how to digitize two tracks from it and either email them ([email protected]) or even easier just use anonymous ftp to upload them to ftp.donationcoder.com and let me know.

then i can test them out and make sure they work ok and are in a good format before you do more.

also i'm happy to send you out via normal mail a regular cd with the full high-quality version of the 2xl emulator which uses local files on your hard drive, which would make it much easier for you to play and test your own recordings.  just send me your address and i'll put it in the mail right away.

and as far as this: "I may even make a few new one for my kids if I can get the knack of it.  doesn't look too hard.  Well, least with the tools we have today I mean. " - it would be so unbelievablly cool to have someone really make a new homebrew 2xl tape.  im not sure if you'd want to call him 3-xl, the sone of 2-xl or what

i agree especially with your first step about doing a search with the word review in it - seems super simple but some people forget to do that simple thing, and in this world of marketing, you really need to look for reviews from real users first.  you'll soon learn to pick out sites with honest user reviews.  epinions is good and amazon.com user reviews can often be good too.

google has a new blog search tool that might be useful also to search for reviews of the product you are interested in only within blogs, which can be a great way to learn what real people think of some product:

basically the low,normal, high, above, realtime
are just priority levels from lowest to highest order, so the higher the priority, the more attention that program will get when competing with others.

you should almost always avoid Realtime, as it takes up much too much resources of your computer and can make it unresponsive; definitely do not use this mode unless you have good reason to.

below and above are new and not very useful, they are kind of in the middle levels.

the most useful are Low, Normal, and High, these are really the only 3 you need to worry about:

By default programs run at Normal priority.
When process tamer tames an app it sets it to low priority, so it will get less cpu than others.
You might want to set your CD/DVD writer to a rule to force it to high priority to insure it gets the attention it needs.

that's quite strange, i've never heard of such a thing and i'm not sure when that would be the case..
if you find the pointer to it do post.

so what then would you suggest we do?
have a way to tell process tamers to set all other processes to low priority?  theoretically the effect should not be much different, except if somehow the dvd writing app is shelling out the execution of other programs which are suffering when the burning app itself is set at high priority..

one thing to look for in that case is if the cd/dvd burning app actually launches a second program to do the actual burning - in which case you'd want to make sure you add a rule to force THAT program to high priority always, rather than the main user interface program.

It's nice to meet you - I didn't realize you were the author of CAKE (Common Archiver Kit Experinment)!
CAKE is a beuatiful and extremely cool project and like you say, people may not realize they are benefiting from your generous work when they are using other compression programs

I think it speaks volumes about your generosity that you've released CAKE as open source, and just reading your forum and comments here it seems to me that you are one of those rare freeware programmers who really cares about his users and about making free software, and also making free components that other programmers can use to make their own software.  Most people do not realize that it takes a lot of effort to prepare components for other programmers to use, and it takes a special person who has the generosity of spirit to make such things available to help other programmers improve their software.

I will update the review with your corrections, and hopefully the author of the review will respond in more detail to some of your comments.

I agree comletely that different people have different preferences about what what features are most important and what interfaces they prefer, and people need to try different programs to see what suits them best, and I think people should visit your page and check out what you are doing.  QuickZip has some unique features and indeed has been a groundbreaker, and is definitely worth a try.  And I hope you will not be a stranger on this forum and keep us updated when you have a new program or a new major release - I look forward to hearing more about your work.

Again, it's an honor to meet you and I'm glad you posted.  Hope we can speak more again in the future.

i think you have a good idea there cartoon - and i think i might add such a feature to process tamer.
very good idea.
so like a simple menu command that lets you pick an app to get full priority until it finishes.

for waht you want however, an easy solution is just to set a rule in process tamer to always run your dvd app at high priority.
that should accomplish what you want.

this would be a win-win thing for all of us if there were enough of us willing to jump in together.
and the more i think of it the more i think it might be worth at least experimenting a little without needing commitments from anyone.

i think we may try to upgrade to a better plan (though not the full dedicated server we would want eventually) for a month or so just to see what kind of speed we could get, and provide free web hosting accounts for any dc member that wants, just to play with and see if its something you might be willing to chip in on and support eventually.

so if its something you think you might be interested in, post a reply with your thoughts - it's not a commitment on your part to join in - we just want to get some idea of how many people might be interested in this.

if we do do it, it will only be if we can commit to doing it properly.

We have no interest in becoming web hosting resellers for a variety of reasons (no desire to keep track of payments, no desire to have an adversarial relationship trying to keep track of who is using up all the bandwidth/cpu), but i am curious to know if there are people here who would be interested in pooling our resources to pay for a dedicated server which could host web sites and home pages of our members.

if there were enough of us it would be possible to pool our money and get a fantastically fast and stable and big server with every feature on the planet.

most individuals buy a cheap hosting plan, say $4 to $10 per month, and companies make a huge profit off these small and limited accounts.

but if for example 10-30 of us got together and pooled their money, combined with the money donationcoder would put in for our contribution (maybe $80 per month), we could pay for an amazing server that would be 10x better for each individual than the cheap accounts, at the same price.  so for example if we got 30 people willing to pay $8 per month, then this might be something worth pursuing..

but if we did try to do this we'd have to find a way to do it that didn't require the hassle of trying to collect money and stuff.  not sure exactly how to do that.. probably not a feasible idea..  we'd also have to find someone to volunteer to do tech support and help install stuff, for the reward of having a free account on the server..

anyway, just an idea.

i'm a huge fan of PayPal and it is in fact the far preferred way of donation to this site (reasons listed on donation page).

i took another look at the donation page and i wonder if what may have thrown you off is that the big images for going to the donate method pages show an image with what looks like only visa/mastercard picture, and that may have been what gave you the erroneous opinion?  

maybe we need to change those images so that they include a little paypal logo among them?
