and another advantage of using a wiki for storing info about the alternative programs is it would be easier for people to add info after the review goes live.

again, a video editing pro will be able to talk for hours about tweaks and optimizations,

but the simplest path to best gain in performance wrt hard drives is probably just to have 2 so that your temp files are on a separate drive from working files, or so that you can have source on one drive and target file on another.  and having a very fast drive (sata would be nice) would make a big difference as well.

Mouser's Zone / Bug Tracker - How to Submit Bug Reports and Feature Requests
« Last post by mouser on October 25, 2005, 08:08 AM »
We are going to install a bugtracker system at DonationCoder, to make it easy to submit and track bug reports and feature requests.
Anyone want to suggest their favorite (open source) tool for this?

Here's one brotherS was telling me about on irc channel, seems pretty good:
http://bugs.miranda-im.org

The tracker will be used by all software on our site and provide a uniform interface for tracking issues on all of our programs.

great post patteoks,
this ability to quickly add a bookmark with comments and keywords from the browser itself sounds like exactly the right way things shoud be done.

blat looks very useful - thanks stefan!

i wonder if it would be better to have a util that sends it directly, or one that opens up the computer mail program and starts off a message.. i guess finding a solution for both methods would be nice..

General Software Discussion / Simpletidy - html cleaner
« Last post by mouser on October 24, 2005, 09:28 PM »
for those of you who work on web pages, one of the more frustrating things is that there can be erros in the html code that makes it not quite up to standards compliance, and yet it looks ok to you in the browser, although you might have trouble in the future or in another browser.

here's a nice little freeware mentioned on fileforum today, Simpletidy:

http://kotisivu.dnai...umpu1/simpletidy.htm

sounds nice and simple and useful:
  • Cleans your HTML code
  • Convert your webpages to wellformed XHTML 1.0 strict
  • Cleans Microsoft code
  • Shows validation errors and warnings
  • Drag and drop from Explorer
  • Freeware

makes use of the open source htmltidy code, which is a good thing.  definitely a nice tool for your web design toolbox.

Living Room / Re: Some ideas to help do more full length reviews..
« Last post by mouser on October 24, 2005, 07:40 PM »
right, the wiki would not be the final review - i was only playing with the idea that as a group we could fill in pages for all the apps in the category, with different people adding info about each app and screenshots, and people adding opinions, and then one person writing the review proper, using the wiki as a kind of appendix of sorts...

the only thing this raises is again the same issue with the blogs and the issues raised with wikis in the past, and that is, would we be better off just using the forum for this.. and i think the answer may be yes..

hmm.. maybe we could use a wiki for this...
so that different people could add a different page for different apps in a category, with their opinions?

i should say though that i find it does help me to keep talking about longterm goals and interface and organization, because it shapes design decisions earlier on.

i'm not an expert in such things, but there are a few hardware things that you should consider:
1) make sure you have plenty of ram (1gb)
2) get yourself a nice hard disk for video; sata or scsi hd, separate from the operating system hard drive.
3) fast modern cpu.

keep in mind i dont have any experience in video editing, these are just some things that seem likely to me to yield the biggest payoff in terms of bang for the buck.

« Last post by mouser on October 24, 2005, 11:33 AM »
I figured it would be easier to get the backbone in place, then work on the clipboard stuff

this is generally true kfitting, but in this case i think its most important to get these features in asap even if it means a little more work later to move the clipboard stuff to a more independent module.

stefan - yes exactly, an easy paste screen is on the short list.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS - Program Goals
« Last post by mouser on October 24, 2005, 10:22 AM »
great to see this thread posted.

what i could use the most help with also is getting a list together of what is most important first, to get ourselves a great tool.

as kfitting said, i do intend to make this a general purpose tool as he has described perfectly.

but we also need to make it do 1 job great first, and i suggest that be clipboard stuff.

so as carol said, i'm thinking the first priority should be:
1) speed up and clean up efficient handling of large clipboard collections
2) support for multiple format clip+paste (personally i use plaintext but i know others need more)
3) good support for quick pasting into apps
4) customization/exclusion of clipboard capture

anything else?

to recap:
we need a long-term goal+feature set and a short-term goal and feature set, let's discuss both, and i'll try to get the short-term feature set implemented in the next month or so.

On a side-note.. was it due to my conection or due to the site that I just waited 22 seconds (!) between clicking "new topic" and getting to the edit page!?

i don't think it's your connection - the site seems to experience intermitant periods where it gets quite slow - we are doing a large amount of traffic on this site, probably more than our current server can handle - so we are looking for a new hosting plan.
