it sounds like motherboard.

mobo companies seem to be good about this stuff, you call them, they send you a new one, often before they even get back the old one.

whiteboard looks actually quite good and the kind of thing i was looking for for our collaborativet writing;
the big brother versions look even better but are way to expensive.
i'm going to try it a bit more.

a big drawback for us (though would be a real advantage to some), is that it's a remote app hosted by them, which means we get locked into them pretty much once we start, and we don't have the kind of control to customize things that are possible when applications are run on our own server.  i'd love to find an open source tool like this that i could install on the dc server.

i am going to set the collaborate button above to go back to the wiki for now..

It's the only tool I've found that allows the kind of collaborative editing that we are after, and i think brotherS may be right that we won't need more fine grained access control than simply limiting it to members of the site..

yeah it's a pretty impressive program but too expensive.

i hope that clipboard help+spell will eventually perform the ability to spell in any control similarly to as-u-type.

i had a machine that wouldnt post at all until i reseated memory about 10 times -
then it never had a problem again.  so i'm VERY suspicious always of memory, and reseating memory is always first thing i try.

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Folder Cleaner
« Last post by mouser on November 01, 2005, 01:10 PM »
i love this idea for a reall flexible clearning system -
personally i'd also love to see it so you could right click on a directory and apply the rules,.

and most of all i'd like to get a report in the form of a checklist before it actually does anything, so i could unselect stuff i didn't want deleted.

i've seen some related programs for cleaning temporary program files - if you find a good solution let us know.

definitely sounds like a nice utility for someone looking for something to program, though might be a bit bigger than a coding snack, at least what i'm thinking about.
34612
on a web page you would add:
location="top" to the href, but i'm not sure you can do that in a shortcut.

another good solution would be that you could make your shortcut to a tiny .js javascript file that just opened a web page on a new page.  that should work well.

i guess i can sympathize with him since i'm also one of those people that doesn't tend to ask for help and is quick to reach maximum frustration stage.. just ask my neighbors when they heard me cursing out the computer at the top of my lungs at 3am.  >:(

Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far

http://www.sysintern...-digital-rights.html

from the blog by sysinternals guy:

Given the fact that I’m careful in my surfing habits and only install software from reputable sources I had no idea how I’d picked up a real rootkit, and if it were not for the suspicious names of the listed files I would have suspected RKR to have a bug...

i sympathize with the frustration you must be facing - my very limited experience putting pcs together is that somethings things work great right from the start, and sometimes you get unlucky and have to struggle with the frustration of trying to figure out what is wrong.

the cause of your problem could really be anything, but the standard approach is the same - you want to replace components one by one and see if you can isolate the problem.

given the description of your problem i'd suspect cpu+memory first.

it could be an overheating thing - make sure the cpu fan is running when you turn the machine on.  remove the memory sticks and put back only on stick - try a different slot.  maybe try with no memory at all and see if you can get the bios to post reliably.

if you have another cpu, try replacing that.  same with graphics card.

I'm also very happy to announce that Jibz now has his own software section on the DonationCoder.com software hub:
http://donationcoder.com/jibz

Please consider making a donation to jibz to welcome him to the site.

Allow me to express some personal thoughts.

I met Jibz over 2 years ago on irc, talking about c++ and compression.  We ended up collaborating on a fun open source project called Octane (Open Compression Toolkit: http://octane.sourceforge.net/).  Everyone who knows jibz seems to regard him with a kind of reverance.  He's one of the most soft spoken, professional people you'll meet, with an endearing perfectionist streak.

He's also one of the most generous programmer's I know, and his help in getting DonationCoder.com off the ground has been invaluable.  I'm not sure this site would have ever started if not for his encouragement and support.

Thanks, Jibz.

Official Announcements / New Software Release (11/01/05) - Piper
« Last post by mouser on November 01, 2005, 03:42 AM »
At long last, Piper, Jibz's plugin for TheBat! Email client is now available:

https://www.donation...ibz/Piper/index.html

This is a tool only for advanced users of TheBat!.  From the information on that page:

"Piper is a simple plug-in for The Bat! e-mail client. It provides a macro which can be used to execute an external program, capture the output, and insert it back into The Bat!"

I'll soon be posting a demo movie showing how useful Piper can be in using tools like our own program, TheFormLetterMachine.

It's hard to imagine there was a Coding Snacks section without a skrommel, but there was..

We started the Coding Snacks section thinking we would try to do a couple requests a month, in some spare time.  The section proved to be a favorite part of the site, but we couldn't come close to keeping up with all of the requests.

Sometime in the middle of July appeared the first post by Skrommel, an autohotkey script to dim inactive windows, an interesting request that had been languishing.

Soon after that post came another and another, and soon it became hard to find a request that hadn't been implemented by Skrommel.  What was going on and who was this skrommel?  :tellme:

When he ran out of pending requests, to everyone's surprise, he delved into the requests that had already been parked in the coding snacks subsection devoted to rejected requests  :o

It's a constant pleasure to see his solutions and the names and icons he gives to them.  I know i'm not the only person who views his presence on the forum as one of the nicest surprises we've had since we started this place.

Skrommel has until now had a separate auxilliary page on a separate little site we made to host such things.

Today it gives me great pleasure to announce that we've incorporated his pages into the main site:
https://www.donation.../Software/index.html
http://donationcoder.com/skrommel

I think the best way you can welcome skrommel to the site is to go check out his new page and if you haven't already,
make a small donation to him to let him know you appreciate his work.

Thank you Skrommel for being a part of our site; it's our honor to have you here.
