Living Room / Re: Kodak (Complaint)
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 09, 2008, 06:27 PM »
Looks like a great place to start ...

Personally I wouldn't touch Kodak crap ever again (having myself been left with a camera that doesn't turn on even after sending it away for repair in the UK - any one notice a theme on that website?).

I have put it down to experience and now only use Canon products.

Takes less than 2 minutes to set up a blog at www.blogger.com

What you have experienced with Kodak needs a campaign to combat their complacency and stupidity. Seems to me a campaign needs a focus point.

I am not sure a thread on a forum dedicated to coding is the place to wage the campaign (much as I think you are right). By all means recruit people here and elsewhere to support your cause. I will certainly add my name to a campaign against such shoddy treatment and crap software (EasyShare stayed on my system for about 2 hours before I uninstalled it).

What do others think?

Sounds like BLOG time to me ... let us know when it is posted I am sure others here would happily DIGG it and spread the word!

Well done finding all your photos.

I must admit this is one of the reasons I really don't like software that 'organises' anything in any sort of automated way. Unfortunately huge numbers of photo organisers do this and at best you end up with a disc full of confusing multiple copies. Yours is the worst case scenario!

I personally don't use it much - I do have 5 GoogleMail accounts that I occasionally check with IMAP in Outlook and it seems to work fine for me? What am I missing?

Haven't really used it much yet - seems a handy idea and is pretty instant in use.

#3 ... rule of thumb ... if you want a quiet life stay at least one generation (and preferably two or three) out of date. Windows XP is just becoming mature - give Vista another 5 years and people will have stopped wondering what the fuss was about - and all the old unsupported software and hardware will have gone the way of the dodo and the generation of incompatibilities and irritations will have emerged!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That's why it only works with Office 2007 - everyone used to Office 2003 and before were complaining they couldn't find things in 2007 - now you say it would be useful in 200-2003 ... says it all really.

Personally I used to like the old toolbars and menus but am getting used to the ribbon now and like its productivity gains (esp. the instant preview feature which I think is really cool). Let's not kid ourselves though even in previous versions of Office lots of things were hidden in impenetrable places and often wonderfully obfuscated!

Is it conflicting with another add-in? Try disabling other add-ins in Word.

You might try running the fix and repair tool in Office too to ensure you have your Office installed correctly.

Ampa - I assume you are talking about the MS Search Command Addin (this thread is wandering in lots of directions).

If so it works fine here:

Can't you click on "View all posts" (immediately above the post tree)? You do have to register with the site to use that though.

Use MailStore Home for archiving and keeping you live store in Thunderbird small. MailStore is lightening fast to search and allows you to either keep stuff in the email client or delete it when you archive. If you keep stuff in the client it isn't duplicated in the archive when you sync again.

All versions of MS Outlook support IMAP (as does Outlook Express installed on every Windows machine) so Thunderbird is hardly the only desktop client that supports IMAP!

Actually MailStore Home also supports IMAP directly - so you can keep an archive of IMAP mail with a single click or even use it as an IMAP client!

If you have run a CHKDSK on your discs with full checking of data and non-data areas (the /R switch) then every block on the hard disc visible to Windows has been checked and any errors will have been fixed unless there is a phyiscal problem with your hard disc and it is generating bad blocks at random, or a problem the controller built into the drive, or a problem with you IDE interface on your mother board!

If you have run CHKDISK C: /R and it comes up clean and your drive is now in DMA mode then I would suggest not worrying too much. Perhaps give it a quick check again in a few days and look in your system logs for any problems. If you don't find any issues put it down to experience - it is just one of those things.

If you find errors cropping up regularly you will need to investigate a bit harder - cross that bridge if/when you come to it.

Glad you like it - I have found the Splinterware product very solid and I like the fact that you can run it as a service even when logged off - means you can schedule stuff to be executed at any time and as any user..

Not been my experience - the only times I have had ATA drives revert to PIO mode have been from disc errors (eg. scratched DVDs). In every case the PIO mode was only applied to the drive with offending disc - even though there were two drives on the cable. AIUI ATA100 cables should clearly distinguish between drives because they have separate connections to each drive on the ribbon.

It shouldn't happen with ATA100 cables!

Glad its sorted.

FWIW the PIO revert is usually drive specific - I have two DVD+-RW on one IDE channel and when encountering bad blocks on discs it is not uncommon for one of the drives to revert to PIO but not the other. I think it unlikely that your optical drive would cause your hard disk to change mode.

General Software Discussion / Re: Your fav' audio CD burner?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 06, 2008, 07:00 PM »
I know this isn't audio related but I have started using Nero 7 again having had a lot of problems with coasters from Dual Layer DVDs. Nero seems to burn them consistently whereas I have had a few issues with ImgBurn and AShampoo Burning Suite.

Having said that I was very selective on how I reinstalled Nero - just the BurningROM and a few associated tools - none of the video stuff.

Depends on the formats you want to convert from and too to a certain extent.

For converting to MPEG format for burning to DVDs TMPGEnc XPress 4 is excellent (though not free).

I was trying to access the HiQ WAV format and it was SLOW! (My uTorrent seems to work fine when BT actually allows me to download files - they seem to profile Torrent downloads off the system at certain times of day).

I tried the torrent download and gave up when it refused to go above 1.2k/s after a number of hours. The MP3s were amazingly good download speeds (I was getting over 900k/s which is about the theoretical max my telephone line will support).

General Software Discussion / Re: Thorough harddisk checking.
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 05, 2008, 06:46 PM »
If you don't mind wiping the disc check the manufacturers website - they almost all have thorough diagnostic tools for their drives. They usually have a variety o tests but the most thorough ones usually involve writing to the disc as well as reading.

You could also download some SMART monitoring software to check the SMART status of the drive (there are loads on Google to choose from). These read the constant status checks recorded on the drive and will tell you how close to failure the drive is.

Haven't tried this one but is free and looks fairly mature http://sourceforge.n...ojects/smartmontools

It is available for Windows and Linux.

The Windows download is at http://sourceforge.n...s.php?group_id=64297
