Keep on posting, Darwin; your words are worth it!
The weren't always. But Darwin's posts have been steadily evolving.

Ouch! I've been damned with faint praise.

Nice on tinjaw

Living Room / Re: Laptop hard drive... 5400 or 7200 ?
« Last post by Darwin on January 17, 2008, 04:33 PM »
I can't return it - I bought it at either TigerDirect or NCIX for about $80, open box, and they WON'T take returns on such merchandise. I wouldn't mind that much except that it is almost useless as an external harddrive. My 5400 rpm ATA units are fine but this one is almost impossible to get power to (via a powered hub) and get recognised by Windows  :( So, I don't acutally use it...

OK - you two have convinced me, time to install the latest build (I've got an old one from before Christmas installed and haven't been using it - no time)...   :)

Thanks for that, Lanux!

@cnewtonne - did you take advantage of this offer back in May? If so, what have your experiences been? Is this one worth taking advantage of now?

As for your troubles with finding the right key, I had the same issue in the beginning (and still do sometimes). What I found was that out of "all" the alternatives, the CAPS key did indeed function best, mostly because I so rarely use it. Those times you actually do need it, there's an internal command for turning it on/off. Just press your trigger key, type "cap" (no need to type more) and your only two alternatives of commands should be "capslook off/on." It's not a perfect solution, but I much prefer it to loosing one of the CTRL or SHIFT keys

Thank you  :-* I've been "trying" to get used to the right CTRL key but it's almost impossible to type while holding it down (easier with the left one - must have something to do with the keyboard layout and the frequency of letters typed?). Anyway, it's a relief to know that I can use the caps key if necessary. You're right - it is the most convenient key from a usage perspective

Nope. But I discovered that the right CTRL key isn't a bad choice in conjunction with quasi-modal triggering. It can still be used in CTRL-ALT-DEL and other shortcuts as long as you hit another of the combo keys first. Two things - in this short time I've realised that I never use the key anyway and my right pinky hates holding down the right CTRL key and trying to type. Sadly, setting the left CTRL key doesn't work as CTRL-A, for example, yields an attempt to run a calculate command (presumably internal to Enso) and returns a message saying no text selected - even though I DID select text to copy... So, I've settled on the right CTRL key for now and will try to learn to use it.

Superboyac - you live up to your screen name. I wish I could wade into the guts of programme as you have on this and other occasions and really wring them out. I install programmes and dabble - you OWN them. Awesome

OK. Further to my last post - IF I set Enso to "sticky" mode, will that enable me to get double duty out of whatever one of the limited number of choices I have a for a trigger key? I just can't see any of them being palatable as being given over entirely to Enso. Right - here goes: hold down CAPS Lock, type Pref, hit enter and we're off. I'll report back. But I'm not optimisitic.

That was kind of frightening, actually. I initially bumped each choice down and inserted Power Desk after AB Commander. That resulted (obviously with hindsight) in Power Desk having 17 votes and Variety is the Spice of Life none! As mentioned earlier, I wish I could retro-actively enable the "allow user to change vote" option... I'm DEFINITELY in the Variety camp now (though in fairness I do use DOpus 9 by default and especially when I'm in a hurry (because I know what I am doing with it).

Other - Power Desk

I've probably already mentioned this here - but not including PowerDesk was a glaring oversight  :o and so I've corrected it...

We're going to beautiful Quebec city for a few days.

Helping to celebrate its 400th birthday? NA's oldest, and only walled, city. Fabulous. I'm jealous!

Have a great trip!

Thanks, Dirhael! Looks like we've got similar taste in software - I've purchased a LOT of the same applications as you!

I'm looking at Enso Humanized and wishing that they'd give me more options for triggering it. I resent HAVING to give over one of my keyboard keys to it. I c'mon - I actually use the caps lock key and would like to be able to use it while Enso is running. Ditto the left win key (don't have a right one) and all of the the other options. Disappointed, but will persevere.

Sorry, J-Mac - I dont' seem able to communicate in "complete thoughts" today - just asks my victi er, students from this morning's lecture  :-[

TC UP installs into it's own directory, so you can have both it and TC installed separately (this is what I've done - I am in the minority in quite liking the vanilla version). OR you can specify a separate directory (can't remember quite how it worked when I installed, but I'm pretty sure that it defaulted to c:\program files\TC UP... All  you then need to do is to copy the licence key file into the TC UP directory and it will run licenced as well...

Mind giving us a list of your purchases from the past year, Dirhael? I'd hate to buy anything and have it go freeware - with your list I'd have a starting point for deciding what to, and what not to, buy  ;D

PS to above - J-Mac, you can install the monthly roll-up of TC UP features over previous installs.

EDIT: PPS - thanks for those Mac links, Lashiec  Pathfinder was one of the ones I'd been looking at, hadn't heard of Forklift.

Thanks Vegas! That answers both (related) questions... Sadly, I HAVE that drive, but a SATA. I ordered it in haste without checking the connection and it now sits in an enclosure...

The price of the 7200.1 drives is dropping all the time, perhaps I'll try one.

Word Processor Roundup / Re: Textmaker (Softmaker/Ashampoo Office) 2008
« Last post by Darwin on January 16, 2008, 08:47 AM »
so Texttmaker make one almost half the size of Scansofts! - that's probably due to the "Embed only used characters" option

No - it was the original word doc that was 63kb - TextMaker produced a pdf from it that is 134kb in size versus Scansoft's 123kb pdf. They're close, though (and it's almost impossible to exactly line up the ticked options in each, so this probably isn't a fair comparison anyway).

I'll have to try this little experiment again with a more complex document - I literally went for the first that I found! I'll try to remember to do so later today. If I can replicate this and start prodding SoftMaker for a fix as well, maybe something will happen.

@J-Mac - TC UP is just a re-packaging (with the developers approval) of TC with a whole host of add-ons and plug-ins along with an updated skin. So it's the package that is at 3.4 (I bet 3.5 will be out around Jan. 31) and it contains TC 7.02a. Don't know if that makes much sense?

@the thread: Frigate3 (www.frigate3.com) is free again today at GiveawayoftheDay: www.giveawayoftheday.com worth a look. it's another "orthodox file manager" that is based on Norton Commander.
