Unfinished Requests / Re: Ad Clicker
« Last post by mouser on December 28, 2005, 02:54 PM »
in the old days of ads, people got rich off such stuff.
now sites like google aggressively punish such behavior.  not only will you lose money instead of making it but google has been banning sites for this, and people are using these ad clickers now to attack each other and get each other banned ! crazy world.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: DBISAM error
« Last post by mouser on December 28, 2005, 02:02 AM »
it sounds like something got currupted with the clip database..
is it a brand new install or has it suddently started happening with an old install?

can you check the system tray and make sure you haven't launched clipboard help+spell twice? - i noticed this can cause strange behavior.

welcome veekay.

in fact you sum up exactly why i still use winzip for 99% of my needs:
My favorite remains WinZip, mainly because of its excellent GUI (especially its tight Explorer integration),
and more so since the Zip format is the the most popular archiving format around.

right - this tool is mainly to show you how much power something is using so you can figure out which things you don't want to leave on more than you have to.

its only happening when you start up firefox?
can you connect to the internet without starting up a browser and see if it happens then?
do you use a special isp-provided thing to connect to the internet? they might build it into that as a way of forcing you to see some ads.  what are the pop ups ads for? that might yield a clue.
are you sure its not the homepage that your browser is set for?

you're saying that as soon as you connect to the internet you are getting the popups even though you arent using internet explorer itself?

if so then it does sound like you have some kind of advert software that managed to install iself.
you need to run a proper spyware/adware checker like ad-aware, etc.

musikcube is also fully open source - foobar is not.
i think i may switch to musikcube myself - its more intuitive for me to create playlists the way it does it.

very good point; one of the advantages of hard drive racks and external hds is that you can easily make a backup and store it offsite.  i agree it's a very good idea to protect against fire and theft.

a related plug:

the super cheap lightweight hosting accounts that we are offering to help offset the cost of our new server is a a perfect offsite backup ftp for your valuable files.

it's easy to set up a daily *encrypted* (so that no one else can read them) backup of your important files.  for more info: https://www.donation...index.php?board=60.0

first thing to do in 2006: backup your computer.
if you don't already have a regular monthly backup plan, make it your new year's resoltuion.
your computer hard drive is going to crash eventually - have a backup plan it place!

Best Archive Tool / Re: WinRK v3.0 beta released
« Last post by mouser on December 27, 2005, 12:13 AM »
i'm not sure exactly what it means but from a recent slashdot linked article:
"The best compressor of the aggregated fileset was, unsurprisingly, WinRK. It saved over 54MB more than its nearest competitor"

http://it.slashdot.o...?tid=185&tid=218
33716
to summarize the approach i think seems most common and appropriate. the basic idea is that the smf login is the authoritative login.

  • smf has a helper php file SSI.php which you can include from any other php script (mantis and mediawiki are both php).
  • after including that you can easily get the users name and 'member group' in smf.
  • if the user is not logged into smf, and they want to log in to mediawiki or mantis, you should try to sign them into smf.
  • if they are logged into smf, you should synchronize their smf login with their mediawiki or mantis login.
  • this may amount to creating a new login at mediawiki or mantis if none exists, or changing their mediawiki/mantis group if their smf group is different (rare), and then logging them into their mediawiki or mantis account.

heheh nope. vrgrll should add her comments here, she owns virtually every game system ever made and can clearly lay out the benefits of each :)

most game review sites are so loaded with popups its insane. i used to read ign till they went to this paid subscription thing and that was it for me.

note that these are not normal modern audio books; i think most are older public domain, and some independent narrated book (which actually could be quite interesting).  if you like newer released audio books you should also check out www.audible.com.

i love the zen of #9 on that page you linked dajo:
[9] This is a good plan for life in general. If you have two choices, choose the harder. If you're trying to decide whether to go out running or sit home and watch TV, go running. Probably the reason this trick works so well is that when you have two choices and one is harder, the only reason you're even considering the other is laziness. You know in the back of your mind what's the right thing to do, and this trick merely forces you to acknowledge it.

i love the zen of this.. but it does seem a bit like a recipe for trouble in some cases.. let's remember the KISS addage (keep it simple stupid) - if you have two choices and one is more complicated than the other, better have a damn good reason for not going with the simple solution.

i'm not a gamer - i might play a little bit of 1 computer game every couple years (though i used to play adventure games quite a bit).

i still love reading game reviews though, and i'm fascinated especially by the new kinds of games coming out.

recently i've been reading the reviews on www.eurogamer.net, which i find really pleasently written and full of obvious care and love of gaming.  some examples:
