General Software Discussion / Re: Best Executable Compressor Programs
« Last post by mouser on January 08, 2006, 10:21 AM »
you already mentioned pecompact: http://www.bitsum.com/pec2.asp

a good free (open source) one is UPX: http://upx.sourceforge.net/

i also would like to hear what people view are advantages and disadvantages of the different tools.
there are also protector programs which include compression (asprotect for example).

one point of clarification - bitsum is giving free licenses of pecompact to most donationcoder.com members (the discounts are for new members who want to upgrade to a higher edition). See https://www.donation.../drawing/drawing.php.

Best Virtual Machine Tool / Re: A Gift from VMWare
« Last post by mouser on January 08, 2006, 06:26 AM »
DonationCoder.com does comprehensive reviews of software *categories*:
https://www.donation...m/Reviews/index.html

Note that a review is not of a single program but of a category of programs.
It's a lot of work and requires some discipline and attention to detail - definitely not something that everyone is cut out for
(see zaine's review of archive tools for an example of how big these reviews can get: https://www.donation...hiveTools/index.html)

But we are very much in need of some good objective reviewers and we try to make sure they are well taken care of in terms of software, etc.

as for #1:
here's the get to know each other thread, i'm making it sticky now:

just a reminder that we tend to give out vmware as a reward to people who write full reviews :)
- but on the other hand given the amount of work involved in writing a full review, it might be faster to get a part time job to save up for vmware

well one idea comes up right away when you combine what darwin and hirudin have mentioned about virtual folders as menus - which would be some sophisticated virtual folder menu support.  like being able to say that a menu should show files from certain directories that meet certain criteria, etc.

id love to hear a description of the essential features of tlb that you guys like the most.

all of the prizes should have been sent out - anyone who hasn't received, check your email accounts as set up on your forum profile, and email me if you still havent received ([email protected]).

writing a review of address book programs would be a good way to discover the best and lay out a blueprint of what you think the best such tool should look like, missing features, etc.  it would be a service to users and might help get those features implemented.  having such a comprehensive review would be a good first step before a programmer here embarked on writing a new address book app.
33587
thats a useful picture hirudin - i hadn't thought of combining big and small icons on one toolbar.. i'll have to consider that.

i know there are a lot of application launchbars out there - hopefully ours will find a little niche and be able to implement some useful features.  i suspect that over time we'll all be able to think think of enough new features that will make it something special.

spent all day working on this..
needs a quite a bit more tweaking but i do have it so it will auto scroll+pan and capture *some* windows, including internet explorer engine.
hopefully ill be posting a test version of sc with scrolling capture soon.

did you maybe start two instances of it? i really have to prevent that as it drives it crazy until you kill both and restart the app.

here's an offer: i'll write a custom program for every new review someone writes :)

nice post - i like this idea.

this site is committed to supporting good developers, be they open source, freeware, shareware, or commercial.
but it is also here so users can share experiences about developers who have not treated them well.
carolh should add her bad program experience as well.

id really like to hear from people about if different screenshot capture apps have different success with this feature - are there times it fails? when? any feedback about what you'd like to see in scrolling window capture etc.

i can see im going to have to give in and implement this feature soon.
33595
i actually find myself using a launch bar a lot (i use advanced launch bar above).
mainly it offers me a quick visual choice of commonly used apps - and i find it sort of like a "reminder" of the tools i use the most.  without it on the screen i don't remember my available tools :)
33596
DonationCoder.com will be releasing a launch bar app soon, as a precursor to Context Menu Commander.
It will be focused mostly on functionality rather than slick appearance (ie nothing as visually fancy as the mac osx dock).

I'm interested in hearing what "launch bar" apps people use:

  • what's your favorite and why?
  • best feature?
  • things you'd like to see added or improved?

examples of some launch bar tools:
http://www.truelaunchbar.com/
http://www.freelaunchbar.com/
http://www.alentum.com/alaunch/index.htm
33597
is waste actually being maintained?
