someone else just reported this today.. i wonder what is going on..
btw - if the tray icon is there, then it IS running - it just means that the configurator tool is not finding it.
it's important that you launch the configurator through the tray tool otherwise the configurator won't find it.

until i figure out what is causing this let me just point out that the only thing that happens when the configurator doesnt find the tray tool (says its not running), is that any changes you make to rules won't automatically be seen by the tray tool, so you'd have to exit and restart it in order for changed in the rules to take effect.

i'll try to get this fixed asap.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQX format for compression
« Last post by mouser on January 21, 2006, 05:11 PM »
i happen to own winrar and like it a lot, but i do dislike that the compression algorithm is proprietary.  i wish we could standardize on algorithms that are open source, that could be used by any programm to compress and decompress.

it's always easier when someone else has made a good program - you can see what works and what doesn't, and what you might do differently.  there are lot's of advantages to going first of course, but much to learn from a good program.  clipmate is definitely one of the best.

actually, i used a database solution like clipmate and i'm having 2nd thoughts about it.. i'm not a huge database fan.. so i'm currently mulling over rewriting some of clipboard help+spell myself..  that's part of the reason that chs is in a quiet period.

thanks allen, and thanks for the bug report.
the auto-filter is definitely in the works.
chs is one of the younger apps on the site, and i do hope to get it to clipmate level of functionality eventually..

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: FeedBlitz - THE new way to track and read blogs?
« Last post by mouser on January 20, 2006, 03:02 PM »
i set up a feedblitz syndication for recent posts at DC:

http://www.feedblitz.com/f/?Sub=22516

basically the idea is simple - you sign up and receive a daily email listing all new posts on the forum (discovered by this service using RSS).

i'm not sure if it will get all the posts, but it's interesting and might be just what some people might like (works best with html mail).

i'm having a hard time reproducing these..
for case #1, can i just check that it's not simply a matter of the zoom level making the onscreen image look strange?
maybe it's dependent on the actual border you used.  can you see if you can figure out if maybe its a specific border image causing this.  i seem to have some memory of this kind of bug at one point..

for case #2, i'm having a hard time reproducing; note that in options on redbox tab you can choose to use redbox mode for capturing regions; you might want to try selecting to use redbox for that or not, and see if that solves your problem, and let me know which one causes this trouble.

fodder's link, to Mark Russinovich's blog entry about the wmf vulnerability, will no doubt be the definitive word on the subject.

His conclusion:
"The bottom line is that I'm convinced that this behavior, while intentional, is not a secret backdoor."

looks like steve gibson is going to be eating his words on his next radio show.

i have to say, much to the chagrin of many of my friends, i am in favor of enforced standards.  i am generally against skinning and non-standard user interfaces, so in that sense i actually support apple's attempt to standardize interface guidelines and insist on them.. and i do have respect for some of the hci (human computer interface) research.. but if a company decides to go with what to me is an obviously inefficient design (one button mouse) for the benefit of aethetics and easier tech support over the phone, then i know it's not a set of standards i want to be part of.

General Software Discussion / Holding code ransom?
« Last post by mouser on January 18, 2006, 08:02 PM »
Editorial Imagine the following situation: A collection of computer users draw up a wishlist of software they'd really like to see developed. These end users then begin to donate money to projects that they'd individually like to see appear. A programmer then goes about creating an item from the list that has donations attached to it. Once the project is complete and enough money has been raised, the author can collect the cash and release the software. Finished code is withheld until enough money has been donated.

i am a right mouse click fanatic - i think the idea of having context sensitive options show up when you right click on something is the best thing since sliced bread.  i also consider the scroll wheel essential now.

another note: for those of you using mice without a side back+forward button, time to upgrade! it makes a huge difference when surfing - highly recommended.

if you haven't seen some of the mac osx dashboard stuff though, some of the visuals are damn impressive.  it's kind of like those silly computer scenes in movies where someone is checking their email and you are like wtf kind of crazy email system is that with all the visual effects and stuff.  mac programmers put in a LOT of effort to make their apps look slick.

for the programmers:
objective-c and objective-c++ the oop languages (alternatives to c++) are getting a lot of attention since Apple acquired Next, which were the main proponents of it.  used a lot in mac osx programming.

i think rover has some good points as well - there are definite benefits to having more control over the system in terms of being able to guaruntee a predictable experience, and enforce a set of standards.  and you do have to hand it to apple for spending time worrying about the details.  i know some serious people who were very impressed how apple networking stuff "just worked" out of the box.

though i have to say, same people called me for help to fix their network when their mac stopped being able to connect to the network, and my experience was, when it worked, it just worked, but when it didn't work, it just didn't work, and gave very little clue as to why or what you might do to fix it.  this is often the price you pay with such stuff - it's designed to be overly friendly and helpful, which is great sometimes, but can be hell when you really need to fix something.  linux has a long history of being the opposite.  everything is configurable and customizable and accessible, but it can just be overwhelming.  i find myself prefering the middle ground.. though i am not a huge fan of microsoft.  i think i'm in the "every OS sucks" camp.
