skwire, this is an amazing tool you've made.  Thanks so much.  I'm using it right now at work and it is working wonderfully.  I owe you one.

KMPlayer's author is developing another media player: Daum PotPlayer. there is a thread in Doom9's forums which keeps track of the progress.

http://forum.doom9.o...wthread.php?t=148745
Nice find!! A new player by the author that is intended to improve KMP?  Awesome!  I love KMP, it's a solid player.  I'm very excited to see how the guy improves on it.

Living Room / Re: Laptop choice: better CPU or more RAM ?
« Last post by superboyac on October 27, 2010, 06:06 PM »
I don't know...I'd normally go with the one with the better CPU.  The reason is because RAM, HD, card reader/usb is much easier to update or replace than a cpu on a laptop.
3329
What I would do is this:

1) Clone your current drive to another, spare hard drive.  Make that clone bootable and remove it from the main computer.
2) Wipe current drive and install Win7.  Install cloned drive in main computer.
3) Under Win7, run that cloned drive in an XP VM and take from it as necessary.  No second machine needed.
Ah!  That's a cool solution!  I like that.  Then I can keep both without doing any dual boot stuff.  That's good stuff.
3330
I don't know what happened, but it was fixed by inserting a new section break and redoing each section's header/footer separately.  But I didn't have to do that before, so I don't know.  Whatever.  It works now.  Thanks everyone.
3331
im not a big fan of dual booting, too many complications like this.. better keep 2 pcs, or even use a swappable boot hard drive.
You may be right.  Maybe the best thing I can do is to make a complete image of my current C drive, store it on another drive in case I need it later.  Then just do a fresh win7 installation, and if anything goes wrong, I can recover my image from the other drive.
3332
Do you think I can use Bootit NG to handle all of this partition and drive letter management?  Meaning, can I use the program to have both boot options load the system drive as C?

App!  Thanks for the links, they are good.
3334
You are right that you certainly can't start with the Win7 drive as E: and later transistion it to C: without breaking things.

What should be possible though, if you're using separate drive, is to disconnect the XP when installing Win7. Then Win7 should refer to the one it's on as C. When you later connect back the XP drive it should get a label like E: from Win7 and not mess up anything.

I'm not sure if you're working with different partitions on the one drive?
yes, I am talking about two partitions on one drive.

If I do what you said, can I have both be seen as C if I boot into each one independently?

The Korean version of the forums has that latest version (3.0.0.1438):

Geez, yet another site?  I don't get it.  Thanks for the link.  I shouldn't be surprised anymore, I suppose.  I promised myself I'm going to stop being irritated by all the things I've been ranting about lately.  My solution is to be more positive by ending all complaints or rants with a possible solution to end on a positive note.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a detailed way to transition my XP system to Win7 over a span of a couple of months.  I'll present my idea and concerns, and maybe you can address my issues.

My main PC is an XP system.  It's quite a beast.  I have TONS of software installed and when I transition over, I want most of it setup on the Win7 setup.  Now here's the problem:
When I go to Win7, i want the system drive to be C:.  Why is this an issue?  because my plan is to first install Windows 7 on my existing C drive as a dual boot thing.  But if I do that, because XP is already on there, so the Windows 7 will be installed on another letter like E.  That's fine for now, but when I finally transition over, I want the Windows 7 to be the C drive now.  Is that possible?  It seems to be more difficult than one would think.  I don't want everything in win7 to be referring to E and then I change over to C, and everything starts breaking.

Ideally, I'd like both of them to be C depending on which OS I've booted into.  So if I boot into XP, I want the system partition to be C and the other boot partition to be E.  But I want the same for when I boot into Win7.  I want the Win7 system partition to be C.  I just don't know if that is possible.

KMPlayer is a difficult program to keep track of.  Which is the official website?
http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/
http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php
Those two seem the same to me.
If you go to those sites, the most recent version is like 2.9 or something.  BUT...if you go to filehippo, there's a version 3:
http://www.filehippo...m/download_kmplayer/

So I don't really know what's going on.  Do you?

I need a tool or method or something to automate to freaking meeting requests in Outlook.  Every time a request comes in, I have to accept it, and then click on send a response.  It's a pain, especially with a bunch of requests coming in.  Also, the way Outlook handles changing meeting information is horseshit.  It asks you if you want to send to just the new people that were invited.  You say yes...and it sends it to everyone anyway.  It's really quite a poor program given that it's so popular and has been developed forever and it's from the giant Microsoft.  embarrassing.
3339
I have no idea what has happened.  If I spend another hour on it and can't fix it, I'm just going to copy/paste and redo the document from scratch.

And as far as backing up, believe me, I'm pretty well covered due to my paranoia.  I use the program Autover to back it up.  Basically, every time I modify ANYTHING (even if I just change a letter and click save), it saves a backup copy.  So I have this huge directory of an insane amount of backups in there with every little change saved as a separate file.  I realized that as soon as I started reading about Word and styles if you remember that in the other threads.  I'm just about done with that particular project at work, so if I lost it now, I think I'd blow some kind of fuse in a way I don't even want to know about.

OK, I've been really pining for something like this for years.  Here's what I'm going to do in the coming months:
I'm going to make a planning document that will detail out how such a website builder should work.  I will have nice diagrams and visuals and very clear explanations about how everything should function.  I probably won't be able to program, but I think I can put together a pretty good game plan.  Maybe someone will create it, maybe not.  Maybe I'll be able to do something in the future.  But at the very least, I want to write down my idea for such an application.  I think such a thing could be immensely powerful and useful.  Look at how Wordpress has evolved from a blog to being able to do so much more.  I think this idea here can be even bigger, easier, and more useful.  More on this to come eventually, but it's not going to be quick or anything as I'm working on several other ideas currently.  This one is really bugging me, though.  I thought when I started thinking about this 3 years ago that something would have come along by now, but I don't think it has.
3341
Word is driving me insane again.  Why does every seemingly simple task turn into a pain in the ass??

Anyway, I'm trying to do page numbering in the following way:
1) No header/footer on the first page
2) The table of contents will be numbered with small roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc.)
3) The rest of the document will start at '1' and continue from there.

Now I had this working fine at first.  But I started fiddling around with the header/footer, and now the page numbering doesn't work anymore for some reason I can't figure out.  I can't restart the page numbering, so it's just staying as one continuous numbering system from the beginning.  I keep going to the freaking page numbering dialog box, I tell it to restart the numbering from the current position.  Does it do anything?  Of course not.  As soon as I click 'OK', nothing happens except it shifts my cursor all the way back to the top of the document (from where I was previously at in the middle somewhere).  So i don't know what the hell is happening there.

I've tried just about everything and used all the suggestions I've found on the web.  Nothing works.  Sometimes, i just hate MS Word.

My buddy from college also just recommend Python to me to start out with.  I'm definitely going to start with that and see how it goes.  We used to program a bunch of stuff in Matlab together, and he said I'd pick it up fairly easily.

And don't forget to check out the self-teaching programming school on the DonationCoder forum -- it was designed with one purpose in mind, to help motivate people to teach themselves how to program.  Some people find it quite fun!
Oh yeah!  i totally forgot about that, thanks.  I'll definitely start there.  The first thing I need to learn is the vocabulary.  Everyone is talking about frameworks, languages, libraries, etc. like I know what they are.  I have no idea.  I call all of that stuff "programming".  As of now, .net, java, C# mean the same thing to me.  I have no clue what the different levels of abstraction mean, so I need to learn that quickly.

Turbo Pascal!
Story:
When I was in 11th grade, my Calculus teacher was also the computer science teacher.  He wanted me to take his programming class, but I didn't because it was very early in the morning and interfered with my swim team practice.  I've always kind of regretted that.  I did become pretty good at programming the TI-85 calculator in that class, though.  But everyone had the TI-82 at the time (1995).  He would call me at home once in a while to ask me to program something in the TI-85 to share with the few classmates who also had the TI-85.  What's funny about this story is that the only other time he called home was to tell my mom that I talk too much in class and my ass wasn't in the seat when the bell rang.  So when the phone rang, I was either getting in trouble or being asked to help the teacher.  Teachers often had a love/hate relationship with me.

I've learned to take mouser's advice pretty seriously over the years because it's not often that he just comes out and offers it.  So I'll have to take a look at python.  I remember when I was trying to figure out how to make my website, I was about to go with Drupal and mouser said a little something about it that really set me straight.

But, the reason why I want to do .net and c# is because my buddy here at work uses it and he's a great programmer.  So I can always harass him with questions and it's very convenient.  Also, I have programmed before so I'm comfortable with the idea of it.  But I've never done real programming before.  I'm only doing this to see if maybe it's something I can pick up and put to good use with all my ideas.  Then maybe I won't have to be so critical of all the software out there that I'm always complaining about.  Maybe it will make me a more positive person!   ;D Seriously, though, I've always been a closet programmer.

In my current build, I have those two edit controls set to insert a tab character when the tab key is used.  However, you will lose the ability to tab out of that control to the next one.  Make sense?

or just support the standard \t for tab and \n for newline
I had no idea about those "standards".  Thanks!  I've run into so many situations where I've wanted to enter characters to indicate new lines and tabs and have given up.

skwire, this program is excellent.  Thanks for doing it, that was very nice of you.  I think it works very well.  My only comment is how to add a 'Tab' character in the prefix or suffix?  I'm guessing it can be done with a unicode character, but I can't find it.  Since the tab character is fairly common, I would suggest you add a button that will conveniently add the tab character to the fields (prefix/suffix).

As for the name, I actually really like "List Numberer".  It's clear and has a little charm to it.  When I get home, I'll look for an icon for it and send it to you, and you can use it in place of the ahk icon, if you like.

Well...the tug is becoming a bit much.  I think I'm ready to start learning how to program slowly.  I feel too limited by my current computer skillset and I'm having way too many ideas and becoming too frustrated with how to deal with it.  I'm thinking of getting into dot Net and C sharp.  I think that's a good beginning for a newbie and the combo will mean fast applications I think.

I've held off on this for years.  I'm totally the kind of person that is drawn to programming.  I've become such a software geek over the years, I know exactly what I want in programs.  I programmed the TI calculators back in high school and got pretty good at it.  I took an introductory class in my freshman year in college for programming.  I did very well in that.  I've just never plunged in because of my other hobbies and I knew it was the kind of thing that would suck me in in a dangerous way.

One thing that I've learned over the years about taking up new things is to just dive in and do it.  I'm inclined to study a lot up front and ask a lot of questions before even getting my hands on something.  But as an adult, that can prevent you from actually starting and I end up in a perpetual state of learning and never doing.

Oh my goodness!  Thanks so much for posting that.  I've always wondered how the process went.  And it was funny as hell.

skwire, thanks so much for doing this, I wish I could repay you somehow.

Ah!  That's even more clever.  Just like the rumor that antivirus companies actually create/distribute viruses to make their software even more relevant. I see...
