N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Re: NANY PRE-RELEASE: Dedicated Windows client for Slack
« Last post by Deozaan on October 29, 2014, 01:39 AM »
You should make a DonationCoder slack team.

So I've noticed that when it's minimized to tray, if I double click or right-click and select "Show Main Window" it will make the window show up in the task bar, but it doesn't actually show the window until I click it in the task bar. So that's kind of useless.

Also, while it's in the state of still minimized but showing in the task bar, it also still shows it in the tray, which I think it should only do when it's minimized. Which... erm... I guess it is/does. So once you fix the first problem, this second one will also go away.

I'd also like to request a portable/zip/non-installer version.

For the first one, yes.

There's a widget called "Directions" which you can just put on your "desktop" and it will have you configure it to set the destination and navigation type (car, public transportation, biking, or walking).

For the second one... Sounds like your MobileVOIP app would need a widget to support that. Or if it could hook into your device so that calls made were intercepted and the MobileVOIP app was made as the default app (I used GrooVeIP which did this). Then you could just use a Contact widget to call the contact and let the MobileVOIP app intercept/override it and go from there.

While this may sound gimmicky, removing windows has the added benefit of weight reduction and would also simplify plane construction. It would also allow greater flexibility when designing the interior of the plane.

What? The windows on planes I've been on feel like some kind of plastic. How is replacing a bunch of windows with a couple huge displays and the wiring needed for them going to decrease weight?

Also, in my experience, you usually don't need to fill any form. You just need to click a "continue" or "I agree" button. It's annoying losing your credentials every hour and needing to open the browser and press the button again, especially if you don't realize you've been disconnected (e.g., using a WiFi tablet (no option for 3G/LTE)).

I was thinking that my Nook might be the gateway into Android for me.  But It's turned out to be the exact opposite- I just use it for reading.

Is the Nook even really Android? I mean, yes, I know it's built on Android. But the Amazon Kindle devices built on Android are so customized that they're not really Android (IMO). I would never recommend an Amazon Android device to someone who was interested in getting into Android, because Amazon changes the experience so drastically that it's not really the same thing anymore.

It's a bit like saying you're interested in vampire lore, then exposing yourself to only the Twilight series and then saying you just can't get into vampires. Or something. :P

Is there an official Cody svg or png?

Not official, but there is a Cody vector that I made for Paintshop Pro, attached to this post.

Also, I'd love help in keeping this thread up to date:

Thanks for the time and effort of compiling these threads into this latest newsletter. I found a few interesting threads that I had missed. Thanks!

Is there any way to upgrade an older installation to the latest version? I have a working Mint 15 install. Instead of starting it all over from scratch, it would be nice if I could tell it to upgrade itself. I went into the Update Manager and updated everything, but it still says it is running Mint 15.

You can...but it's not recommended. Especially if you have a bunch of PPAs added to your repositories. Many of those are version specific so you'd need to remove and install the correct ones for the version of Ubu underneath Mint.

And even though Ubuntu has a do-release-upgrade command, you'll need to manually update your software sources list first for it to work.

I've done upgrades that way (in the past) and I learned they made for far more work than they saved. About the only time I've found Debian's apt-get dist-upgrade or Ubuntu's do-release-upgrade really useful was for upgrading servers. Desktops just have too much "other stuff" loaded for either upgrade command to work reliably.

Recommendation: Don't. Just do a clean install. You'll save more time in the long run.

Does anyone know if this has changed now that Mint has changed its upgrade path? That is, if I install some version of Mint 17, should I then be able to update to Mint 17.x without having to do a clean install?

DC Gamer Club / Re: Are Ubisoft trying to kill PC gaming?
« Last post by Deozaan on October 24, 2014, 10:52 PM »
This is status quo for PC gaming. Remember when Crysis came out? A top-of-the-line, brand new PC couldn't run it on the highest settings. AC:U will likely be used for benchmarking purposes for the next few years until even CPU-embedded graphics can run it and then the next bigger and better thing will replace it.

Slack looks interesting, but I don't really know what I'd use it for. I was going to sign up so I could try it out, but it asks for a company name.

I don't want to sign up as a company. I want to sign up as an individual.

You can install a Google Chrome Extension that will allow you to remote to your other devices.

It's also very useful to access your PC from an Android device.

Thanks!

You can also click the arrows at the bottom which will give you some more options, such as resizing the QR code. I've noticed that for some reason I can't make it bigger until I make it smaller first.

That is, clicking the zoom in button does nothing, until I click the zoom out button once. Then I can make it bigger than it originally appears by clicking the zoom in button multiple times.
