Yup - great idea, Steven  When I'm going through the links for the newsletter I have to be vigilant about these kind of links because, obviously, come newsletter time they're "dead".

Curt - I'm sure Givewayoftheday featured that app a few months back.... OK twice actually, once in February 2007 and again in June 2007. Here's the original giveaway comments section (1) and comments section (2). I dimly remember downloading and installing the original giveaway. Seemed OK, but redundant given the other solutions I've already paid for!

Hmm... I've grabbed the last release of Sygate (5.6xxx) from the link provided and am debating what to do  PC Tools is working "fine" and with the most minimal footprint I've yet "enjoyed" in a firewall - I guess it's time to investigate further the dll issue...

Yes! I'd be very interested to know as well... Right, off to trawl through this thread to see if you've already let us know!

Thanks, Nosh. I still haven't installed Threatfire - not sure if I'm going to bother or not. The problem you are referring to above, does it relate to Threatfire or to PC Tools Desktop Firewall?

Just an update - four days on and PC Tools Desktop Firewall is settling in on my system nicely. I've got it more or less trained and it's very inobtrusive and, more importantly for me, very light on resources. Thanks 4WD

PS haven't installed ThreatFire - I've got HIPS protection courtesy of WinPatrol Pro and AppDefend. However, might install it anyway after having (just) re-read the Gizmo article to which CodeTrucker provided a link in an earlier posting in this thread...

Yes! Welcome Jill and congratulations on winning Roboform. I've been using it for several years and really can't imagine life without it!

A big, though belated, welcome to Rhutobello as well. I hope to see more of both of you here at DC over the coming months

Heh, heh - that was cool, CodeTrucker. Thank you for the listing of trucker's CB codes. I'm with nosh - I like 10-3 for OT. Like nosh, I figure I'd garner a lot of those  :-[

I'm basically looking for a way to say 'duly noted' without having to say it in so many words. Haven't really given the technical aspect a thought.  :'(

Sorry, couldn't resist.

nosh - I'm not sure where you're going with that idea? You mean have some sort of way of tagging a thread as "read by nosh" so that the poster can see who has and who has not read, and not replied, to a posting/thread? OR do you mean a more prominent display of the number of times that a topic has been read - beyond the column displayed on the main board page, next to the link to the topic? Or have I missed your meaning entirely...  :-[

Reading f0dder and João's description of how they read the forum leads me to believe that it's  time for me to re-think how I do it - I start with "Show new replies to your posts" and then move onto the main "Forum" page and check out "Recent Posts". Occasionally, I'll check out the "Show unread posts (since last visit)" and "Show latest topics" tabs. I guess I miss a lot!

Just thinking out loud here...

I like the "Send this topic" idea and would suggest a new button be available when you receive one of them that is a simple "Thanks for the invite, but I cannot participate at this time." This would then be promoted as the socially acceptable way to decline to participate *for what ever reason", no time, not in the right headspace, you secretly despise the person sending the invite, whatever.

I like this because if we let it be the "conventional" (socially acceptable) way to decline to participate, it would be considered a complete and sufficient response - i.e. no other action on the part of the invited user expected or necessary.

Thanks, App. No hurry - it works well as is. I've settled on simply not enabling the toolbar and will invoke it when I need it. Note - I use Maxthon 2 to surf the web and it doesn't yet support IE and WE plug-ins and toolbars  :( Hence the need/desire to run it as a free-floating toolbar.

Perhaps this could be something similar to the "Show new replies to your posts" page?

In light of f0dder's comments about PM's going astray/unanswered/overlooked, perhaps my earlier suggestion (quoted above) deserves consideration? Essentially, a mod of this type would add another link underneath your username at the top of each page and would take you to a list of recent requests to join conversations. I guess at this stage this would be a fairly large undertaking, come to think of it, because we'd have to come up with another PM type system wherein a poster could click on the "send this topic" link at the bottom of a thread and select an option to send an invitation to another user...

OK, I guess I've talked myself out of my own idea  :o

I like it, App  My only request would be to be able to resize it (more) when it is free-floating. I'd like to be able to reduce its height to the same height as the taskbar so that I can dock it immediately on top of the taskbar. As it stands right now, it fits ON the taskbar nicely, but when I make it free-floating it's double that width at the narrowest setting that it will allow me to shrink it to... See screenshot below:

Yeah - I just tried "Send this topic" (wiped out the post I was writing here, though!) and if it could be configured to prompt for a username and offer to send a PM that would be ideal.

I had been writing about your DC Search Deskbar - very NICE  :-*

OK, fair comment. How about a mod that makes sending a PM to someone who has NOT yet participated in the thread simpler? Something in toolbar to call up a window that will allow one to search for a user by username and PM them without having to leave the thread? This would also facilitate providing a link in the PM to the thread/message in question, would be private - between inviter and invitee, and would allow the user invited to bow out gracefully.

General Software Discussion / Re: The great defrag shootout
« Last post by Darwin on January 25, 2008, 06:36 PM »
I downloaded and installed PD 9 Pro yesterday and am a bit ambivalent about it at this point. I miss the old GUI and I'm finding the new processes that run in the background to facilitate AutoPilot (which now defrags on the fly): PD91Agent, PD01Scanner, and PD91Engine quite resource hungry. I have left AutoPilot enabled for now, but note that it rendered my computer unusable this morning during an optimization run (invoked while I was away from the computer).

Have you tried this, a-lunatic? If so, what are your thoughts? Overall, I'm sure it's a great upgrade to version 8, but I need to learn how to "tweak" it.

PS I like Carol's idea as well - there should be an opt-out option available for those who do not wish to be disturbed. Maybe the mod could even be set up something like Yahoo!'s newsgroups where  you can choose to be alerted for each request to join a thread individually, or be sent a digest daily or weekly that includes the relevant posts (or at least the one that contains the requet for an opinion/advice/website address, etc.

Interesting idea. I confess that I was conflicted reading your initial idea because on the one hand my first reaction was the same as apps: that's what the PM system is meant to do. However, on the other hand I instantly appreciated first how useful this would be and second how many times I would have benefited from it in the past! Not being a coder by any stretch of the imagination, I've no idea how difficult such a mod would be to get up and running, but I think it is an idea with merit

App - I wasn't aware of your deskbar; will take it for a spin!

Couple of posts have come in as I pecked out the above:

App - good point. Perhaps this could be something similar to the "Show new replies to your posts" page?

OR

maybe it could tie in to, and utilize, the PM system? Some sort of code like: [PM=CodeTrucker]I wonder what CodeTrucker would think of this idea?[/PM] in the body of a posting that sends a PM to CodeTrucker with the text enclosed in the code along with a link and the subject line of the thread? I envision it having a built-in error return if the username entered isn't in the DC database...

(there I used one of your favorite smilies <cheesy grin>)

 :-*

Ah... I am aware of HIPS, but was unaware of what ThreatFire was about. Thanks for clarifying that. I suppose that reading it's website might have alerted me to that, but I haven't gotten that far in my cunning plan to try it, yet! I am currently trying out PCTools Firewall Plus 3, as recommented about 4wd. It's nice and light, so far.

Er... no - didn't know that! Thanks, that'll likely save me some grief. Will get to this later today, I hope.
