Collect some insects and place them inside the unique sound chamber. A powerful 3X magnifier enlarges your performers so you can see every detail. Put on the headphones and listen as a microphone under the special sound stage picks up and amplifies every move and noise your bug makes!

« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2006, 05:30 PM »
sorry, yep the about box is wrong, i'll fix it in next version.  i was just rushing to get out the latest release to address this stupid false virus alarm in the dll (see other posts in this section).  the dlls have to do with redbox capture.

artifact:
make sure screenshot captor is not running in your tray when you run the upgrade (i need to add an auto check for this) - it sounds like that is the cause of your problem.

i wouldn't call that a spoof i'd call it an extremely professional and illuminating look at advertising and the value of simplicity.  ties in well with this post: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2641.0

that is a nice gesture but i think that such gifts should be given out without asking people to dondate in return.
since you already have a shirt may i suggest either:
1) get yourself a mug(cup) from donationcoder
OR
2) if you want to give it away, just wait until you see someone else on the forum who is being helpful and then choose them to receive the prize - just tell me who you have chosen and i will give them the prize
OR
3) pick another card on the contest page and award them the prize, if maybe there was someone who made on that you thought should have won but didnt.

Living Room / Coding horror does it again - the importance of simplicity
« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2006, 12:07 AM »
last month's site of the month has a great blog entry today about the importance of simplicity:

i think one of the current weaknesses of donationcoder is that the site is complex and confusing - we need to (and plan to) try to take some steps in the upcoming months to simplify things here a little.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Startup problem?
« Last post by mouser on March 03, 2006, 08:35 PM »
it may be not finding its database due to the shortcut, like maybe the working directory is wrong..

try this:
1. delete the startup you created
2. start it manually.
3. go to options and check the option for "start with windows"

A "charter membership" is granted to people who join an organization during its inception.

This month marks the one year anniversary of DonationCoder.com, and starting April 2nd we will no longer be accpeting new "Charter Members" on the site/forum.  Future donators will be known as "Supporting Members"

Existing honorary members as of April 2nd will be upgraded to "Charter Honorary Members".

While we don't have any immediate plans for benefits that will apply only to charter members and not supporting members, we do view the charter members as those people who supported this site when it really counted, and it's likely they will occasionally get special treatment on the site.

So thank you to all of the charter and charter honorary members for sticking with us and supporting the site through our first year - this site is thriving because of you (hey if you haven't set your avatar or yearbook quote on the supporter yearbook page, now is the time).

So if you've been waiting for a good reason to donate.. now you have one :)

Developer's Corner / Free Kids Programming Languge from Microsoft
« Last post by mouser on March 03, 2006, 01:48 PM »
Sounds perfect for getting your kids started. Free

http://www.kidsprogramminglanguage.com/

What is KPL?

KPL stands for Kid’s Programming Language. KPL makes it easy for kids to learn computer programming. KPL makes it fun, too, by making it especially easy to program computer games, with cool graphics and sound.

Can I learn to program?

If you are using a computer to read this on the Web, you can certainly learn to program! Programming is really good exercise for your brain, too.  The skills you already have that you will let you learn to program are reading and typing and math. As you learn to program with KPL, you will also learn something called ‘computer logic.’

A computer program is simply a series of instructions to the computer. Computers are very good at following instructions, but they must be told what to do very precisely, and using logic that the computer understands.  When you learn KPL, you are learning how to do that. When you learn KPL, you are learning how to make a computer do anything you want it to do – including play games!

KPL is for games?

We invented KPL because we think learning is best when learning is fun. And the whole point of games is fun, of course! It’s also true that playing games is the thing that computers are used for more than anything else in the world. Computer graphics and computer sound make for some very fun games!

Because we were thinking about these things, we designed KPL to make it easy to program computer games.  So it’s easy for you to make computer games yourself! KPL is not only for programming games – it’s for learning other things, too. But learning is best when learning is fun, right?

richard, this is a nice idea that can be reasonably added to a program like our find+run robot and new launch bar program - i will be adding such features in the near future, so that you can tell it that it should bring any currently running instance to the foreground instead of launching a new process.

If you have good ideas about how to improve the newsletter or the site itself just reply to this post.

I want to mention an idea to you guys that i first discussed with zaine many month ago.

It's not something we could do now - there just aren't enough members here who would be able/willing to contribute to it.

But i wanted to tell you about the idea to prepare you for it, to give you guys and gals some time to warm up to the idea.

I call it the DonationCoder.com Funding Club.

The idea will be to find a group of about 50 people willing to contribute $10 a month and 100 people willing to contribute $5 per month.

This will result in $1000 each month into the fund.

This fund would be given out each month to a few programmers (maybe 4 programmers each getting $250) in order to commission a freeware/donationware program which would be released onto the site and made available to the public.

It's a very simple collective action project, that would have amazing results and benefits for all.

The Funding Club could agree on the kinds of programs they want to sponsor, and we might want to occassionally sponsor longer term projects (like $1000 for one project spread out over 4 months).

So like I said, we're not yet big enough to be able to find 150 people willing to make such a commitment, but i'm hoping in a year or two we will be able to.  So mark your calendars and start saving your money :)

Comments welcome.
