A good friend emailed me to let me know that it's a "glorious day in the history of origami", because version 5 of an origami program called TreeMaker has been released (Mac, Windows, Linux, and its open source).

TreeMaker is a program for the design of origami bases. You draw a stick figure of the base on the screen; each stick in the stick figure (the "tree") will be represented by a flap on the base. You can also place various constraints on the flaps, forcing them to be corner, edge, or middle flaps, and/or setting up various symmetry relationships (forcing pairs of flaps to be symmetric about a line of symmetry of the paper, for example). Once you have defined the tree, TreeMaker computes the full crease pattern for a base which, when folded, will have a projection (roughly speaking, its "shadow") equivalent to that specified by the defining tree. The crease pattern can be printed out, or copied and pasted into another graphics program for further processing. Crease assignment (mountain or valley) are not computed, but with a few simple rules and some exploration by hand, the proper crease assignment can usually easily be found.

Living Room / PaPeRo - cute home robot from NEC for kids and stuff
« Last post by mouser on March 13, 2006, 10:31 PM »
PaPeRo was named after an acronym of "Partner-type Personal Robot." It is a prototype "Personal robot" that communicates with human beings as one of the family members at home. Since 1997, NEC Multimedia Research Laboratories have been conducting research on "Personal Robots" and developed the first prototype "R100" in July 1997 and its descendant "PaPeRo" in January 2001.
In the course of in-depth evaluations with PaPeRo, we focused on the human-robot interactions in the real environment encountered at home. Based on the data and insights in the evaluations, the new PaPeRo with more sophisticated human-robot interaction capabilities has been developed.

Living Room / 10 most annoying clocks
« Last post by mouser on March 13, 2006, 10:12 PM »
http://www.uberrevie...ng-alarm-clocks.htm/

i like this one:

clockze001_mi1.jpg

The interactive alarm clock with a unique personality goes by the name, Nooby. To see what time the alarm is set you simply ask him and he reads the current alarm setting and assures you it’ll go off. When your favorite time of the morning comes around, he’ll beep and say, “Rise and shine, it’s time to get up!”. When you go back to sleep and don’t turn the alarm off right away, he’ll beep again, but this time he gets nasty, “Take your fingers out of your ears!”. To put an end to this harassing wake up call, you simply ring the clock’s blue neck. If he senses that you are angry, he’ll get grumpy and ignore you.Price:$29.95

well done deozaan!
this game is damn harsh though, my brain doesn't work fast enough for it.

I've been dying to create a Flash game for a while, but I can't come up with a simple, fun little idea I think I could do.
that sounds like a challenge - surely we can come up with a fun idea.

another study showing soda might be dangerous for your health :(

Soda has already been linked with weight gain and cavities; now the FDA admits that some popular soft drinks could contain a carcinogen. Will the fizz finally go flat?

ps. shouldnt there be some donationcoder.com people making some little flash games?

i would tend to agree with you - with the exception that making a cms seems like a really really fun programming project (which may explain why there are so many).

http://www.intranetjournal.com/php-cms/

For six months in 2004, Intranet Journal's Peter Zeidman published a tutorial on using the PHP programming language to build a content management system (CMS).
Writing your own CMS can lead to a solution that is better suited to your requirements, better addresses the needs of your users, and is better understood by your development team. If you have the time and expertise to write your own in-house system, it may well prove the better option.
Part 1 of the series begins with a look at the overall plan for the CMS, and a look at PHP and the concept of object-oriented programming.
Part 2 takes a look at the basic PHP code that will power the CMS.
Part 3 examines the creation of the database and the database connector.
Part 4 explores validation, and the creation of a validator class and the creation of sections for the content that needs to be managed.
Part 5 introduces security to the content management system, and shows how to create a system that is accessible only to those with authorization to access it. It also takes a look at creating a log-in for users.
Part 6 discusses layouts for the content, templating systems, and talks about possible add-ons and features that can enhance your PHP-based content management system.

Developer's Corner / Re: Farr's ADDNOTE
« Last post by mouser on March 13, 2006, 05:55 AM »
it'll be clearer when i make the demo movie, but basically,
it lets you keep a text file of quick notes, and add a note by bringing up farr and typing like:
addnote remember to buy red wine

that would add a timestamped entry in a plain text file with that text.

you could add aliases for different files, etc. like you could add
idea paint the room green
to have it add a (timestamped) note to a specific todo.txt file

and of course you could add other aliases to open the files, etc.

so basically its just a really quick and dirty way to use farr to help you keep note files.

wonderful -
and i'm glad you mentioned the find+undo stuff missing from fsekrit, as i had forgotten about those,
and now this should spur on f0dder to add those plus the other minor missing things he needs to add (including unicode) to make fsekrit the very best.  maybe wait a few days to give f0dder a chance to add them before publishing?

working great so far (no pun intended).

in fact this is something that i think is so useful that im going to make a video demo movie of the latest farr and show it being used along with calc.

i have 3 requests though if possible:
1) make it parse all commandline arguments (ie until no more args starting with -); that way we can do addnote -top -clip blah blah
2) the first argument should be filename (or make it work like -file "filenamegoeshere"); this is very important, since people need to be able to specify custom files and where they should go.
3) the use of _ for newlines is not good; can we use the standard \n please?

yeah i got down to all black - there are some big orange creatures down there that will eat you and pop you up a level..
(ps. for those that haven't read the help for the game, you eat the (+) things to go deeper and (-) to go up, so me and deozaan are eating (+) to go as deep down in the "pond" as possible):

i haven't tried going "up" as far as possible.. i'll bet there are different creatures up there.

deozaan, i'll look into this a bit - i can't see why it should be using anything other that info stored in your forum profile (ie cookies shouldn't matter), but i know that keeping track of unread posts is a bit iffy.
