really nice minireview joto! looking forward to more and to hearing about your ajax-based game in the future.
also fascinating to see the visual scheme you are using because of the visual impairment issue.

Living Room / Re: Partitioning hard drive - any point?
« Last post by mouser on March 16, 2006, 05:35 AM »
can i put out a call for help in this thread?
baseman is writing a review of partition manager for dc and i'm helping to edit it.

we could really use some help writing up info, opinions, recommendations for the various partition management tools.

so far the programs being looked at are:
    BootIt NG
    Paragon Partition Manager
    Acronis Disk Director
    Symantec Partition Magic
    VCOM Partition Commander
    CompusApps Swissknife
    Ranish

we could really really use your help in writing up some of the content for this review.  if you feel like you can write some paragraphs (or pages), about one or more of these programs: how they work, how they are different from the competition, your opinions, what kinds of users should choose them, etc.

Note we're not really asking for one liner "i like it" type of responses, but really more lengthy discussions of them to help with the content of the review.  We could really use the help. thanks!

And maybe some more general comments about why partitioning is useful or not, and strategies about partitioning - any text that you think would be useful to put into a review would be quite welcome, or links to other guides, etc.  or if you know of any programs you think should be included which aren't.

You can paste your stuff on this thread or email it to me ([email protected]).

I'm really hoping we can get some help from someone who knows some of these programs and has some views.

Official Announcements / Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
« Last post by mouser on March 16, 2006, 05:25 AM »
When will this contest end?
the general trend on this site has been a bit informal - no fixed date set, but when we find a new one that is a consensus winner, we end it.

but probably makes sense to have a date before which we promise the contest won't end.  Let's say April 1 at the very earliest.  Probably more like May 1.

I was really surprised at mouser's comment on Zoot!
you mean when i said it looked nice?
i didn't mean literally that it's appearance was nice, but that the feature set on the page seemed nice. :)

And why aren't I getting e-mail notifications about these posts?
maybe when we upgraded the forum the notifications got reset?

Official Announcements / Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
« Last post by mouser on March 15, 2006, 01:12 PM »
BrotherS and CarolH both have suggested that what with the forum upgrade, we really need to revamp the banner at the top of the website pages and forum page.

both are designed as  a pair with a main image and a sidebar that can extend as far as it needs to go.
i think the sizes are pretty good so we should probably keep to them.

I'm attaching current versions to end of this post.

Note you need to design it without the "a new kind of website" text - since we want to change that and may want to change it dynamically or per page.

Actually i was thinking of a new slogan for the site: "A Place for Lovers of Software" or something like that.

NEW: DOWNLOAD A SAMPLE FILE SET TO TEST YOUR IMAGE IN HTML PAGE:
https://www.donation...com/Contests/banner/

DEADLINE
The contest does not have a hard deadline - we will end it when we get a design so good that it demands ending it.
However, it will not end before May 1st, so any entry prior to that will be considered.

Prizes..
hmm... not sure, free donationcoder.com shirt or mug from http://www.cafepress.com/donationcoder
plus a usb 4x5" drawing pad if you want it, or else some other free software

Please submit files in exactly this dimension, file format (png), and file names.  And you need to provide BOTH a forum pair and website pair of images.

i have to joint the chorus of winxp praisers.  well, 2000 and xp to me are basically the same - the point is that compared to win9x and me, win2k/xp is just 10000x more stable, and it really is quite stable.  so kudos to microsoft they did do a good job in that department from my experience.

noticed this related freeware app at freewareworldteam:
http://www.rtsoft.co...e/help100/help.shtml

Smart Mute is a tray application that has several functions aimed at the person who sits in front of his computer all day like I do. Every time I personally need a hard to find function on my computer I will add it to this program... I don't want 50 tray icons so I like to consolidate many functions in one, right now there are three major functions. Feel free to visit the Smart Mute chatwall to suggest more!

General Software Discussion / Netcaptor web browser - development is dead?
« Last post by mouser on March 14, 2006, 10:14 PM »
i'm a longtime netcaptor user (www.netcaptor.com), mainly because they were one of the first and best at handling tabbed browsing, but there have been no new releases for a year or so.  i know many netcaptor users moved to the free maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/), or firefox.

the netcaptor page says nothing about the state of netcaptor development.

but just saw this post over at the yahoo powertoolssoftware discussion group (see more useful sites on our link page https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html):

Meant to post this the other day but forgot...

I emailed Adam Stiles asking about the status of NetCaptor and further
development.  His response is as follows:
At this point I have no plans to release NetCaptor
    updates. Thanks for asking,
    Adam

cool.
im not sure if this is what you meant, and i hadn't thought of color history idea but actually having a table of previously selected colors (ie a list of colorcode and color) would be incredibly useful.

Developer's Corner / Article on TopCoder competitions
« Last post by mouser on March 14, 2006, 03:42 AM »
This is an article about http://www.topcoder.com/ a site where programmer's can compete to win prizes.

Imagine a reality TV show that combines the performance-under-time-pressure of "Iron Chef" with the scheming and psych-outs of "Survivor," then adds the soaring braininess of—well, that's the problem, really: There isn't anything this smart on TV.
In a world where everyone knew Java or C++, a show based on the weekly computer programming contests organized by an outfit called TopCoder would be a smash hit. Camera crews sometimes show up for the finals that these contests lead up to each year—the next one is in May in Las Vegas. But the weekly run-ups themselves take place in an obscure corner of the Internet, largely unnoticed except by the several hundred people taking part.

you can hide text to display only when reader clicks a button,
just enclose the text between

or

useful when providing hints or answering riddles to avoid people reading the answer by accident.
