Found Deals and Discounts / Re: AppSumo presents SitePoint Premium deal of a lifetime
« Last post by 40hz on September 05, 2015, 01:30 PM »
@app - Thx for the heads up. My GF is a big fan of SitePoint books. She has several.

Purchased it for my GF. Unfortunately it appears there's a glitch with redeeming the voucher. Which surprised me because I've purchased discounts deals through AppSumo before and never had a problem.

Looks like that issue has been resolved.  AppSumo has a new update:

UPDATE #1: All suspension issues are NOW FIXED! Additionally, all accounts now have offline access. Sorry about the "Sumo Effect" issues and enjoy! :-)

That was something we didn't anticipate and it has been fixed...and it was fixed quite quickly, I must add. :)

It was. Within a few hours as I guessed it would be in my OP. But AppSumo and Sitepoint/Learnable have been doing the web thing for quite a while. And I've dealt with both before. So I wasn't the least bit concerned unlike I can be with some of those "bundle" offers. Because I've had a few times where there were problems downloading or retrieving something I bought through those deals, and the bundle seller just washed their hands and said to contact the company that made the product for resolution. One reason I very seldom buy anything through those people any more.

This from AppSumo:

UPDATE: It appears some accounts are being suspended.

No need to worry.

I'm sure this is just a technical glitch as they created this lifetime account just for us and this is the first time ever promoting it. It probably triggered their billing system by accident.

Just emailed SitePoint to have this fixed this ASAP.

I'm guessing this will get resolved in fairly short order.

Surely someone likes the new forum?

I prefer the new look.

I find it easier on the eyes, especially with the purple border.

Agree with Chris. And I do like it, although it seems strange to my eyes. It's definitely an improvement visually. Kudos on the subtle color scheme. Seems to be much faster and more responsive too. Those annoying semi-hangs I used to experience after posting sometimes are now completely absent. The enhanced video embedding support is welcome. And I'm sure there's a lot that's been improved I haven't stumbled upon yet. But I'm a pretty basic user with most things so it'll take me a while.

So...GREAT WORK MOUSER! WITH THANKS TO YOU AND ALL THOSE WHO WORKED THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES-MAGIC TO MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN!

It certainly looks different!

I keep feeling like I just walked into the wrong house party.  :o

I'm sure it'll pass.  ;D

PS- looks incredibly clear and readable on a smartphone. Even with my lousy eyesight.

Not quite a movie. But we get our Lovecraft where we can.

Nicely done webseries called Shadow Bound. Silent, and in B&W (as is fitting), and with plenty of low-tech cheesy special effects for that nice period vibe. Five episodes averaging 20 minutes each. Find it here.

Here's the trailer:

Awesome! Kinda like the old: "I was just playing out on the rooftop one night when someone I couldn't see started jamming with me!" updated for the Internet era. (Still happens in college towns and cities a lot. Happened to me a few times, except I was just playing in my bedroom with the window open when it did.)

Now how cool is that? 8)

I'm actually starting to use Enigmaze.

So basically, it's time to go back to using PasswordCard?

Why not? It's still a handy method to employ.

FWIW I use a variation on that methodology for access to my client's servers with their 20+ character admin passwords. Extremely secure - and it gets the job done.

@Wraith - nice find!  That Enigmaze book is pretty cool.

I'm currently using Enpass (www.enpass.io)

I haven't tried it (was a bit surprised by having to enter an email and a captcha for a free download), but a quick google suggests it is a password database that does not offer auto-fill like LastPass and others, is this still the case?

It's limited as far as autofill goes.  They keep promising additional browser plug-ins RSN. But we're still waiting.

That however, isn't a showstopper for me because I never use autofill since it's a security weakspot. Besides, the "passwords" you'll find in my EnPass database aren't the actual passwords anyway.

I'm currently using Enpass (www.enpass.io)

are you using that with any kind of two-factor authentication?

Edit// I took the liberty of changing the thread title to "LastPass alternatives with two-factor authentication? (including premium LP)"

No. But as no user data is stored on their server (which is only used to sync between devices) would it be all that necessary? The data is encrypted by your device and remains on your device(s) so I don't see where some man-in-the-middle attempt would make any difference. All data is encrypyed and local. You wouldn't even need to decrypt in order to synchronize. It would be a little more work for the local clients  - but EnPass wouldn't need to worry or know about any of the the actual data.

Am I missing something?
well,
as you know, I'm no expert. But the idea that all anyone needs is one password and then they have access *all* my passwords, and more - I find that pretty scary.

Me too. (And I'm no expert either. ;D) Which is why I memorize passwords to critical things such as my bank accounts etc.

But even with that, the passwords in my password manager are not the actual passwords. They're merely memory joggers for the actual passwords. You'd need to know how my "system" (which is pretty idiosyncratic as I'll be the first to admit) works.

Not that it matters. Experts generally agree passwords are better than nothing but far from secure with today's computer resources and state of number theory. Passwords are risk mitigation rather than risk elimination tools.

Unfortunately, nobody is quite sure what to replace passwords with. So passwords it is for now.
335
Am I the only person in the world who just remembers all of his passwords, instead of trusting any service (be it online or offline) to store it?
-Stephen66515 (June 16, 2015, 01:46 PM)

Yes.  :)

Yeah. I think so too.  :P

(Although I do memorize ALL my banking access codes.)

;D

Give them food then.
I read a novel about gold fever in California. If you want get rich put a restaurant.

Our era is a terrorific story about lies.

Perhaps the best business is teaching other good business. And if for some reason the thing goes wrong at least you have no risks.

Could well be true.

One thing for sure...all those companies that served the needs of startups back in the 90s (Dell, OfficeMax, Staples, Kinkos, Steelcase, etc.) made far more money selling those young hopefuls equipment and business services than the vast majority of those startups ever made with their own businesses.

There's a lesson there. A bride brings home a husband. A bridesmaid, 20 offers from hopeful suitors for a date. Do the math... ;)

If I were to ever start another new business, it would be a bank.

I'm currently using Enpass (www.enpass.io)

Syncs across virtually any platform (Linux too!), no user data stored on Enpass servers, one time purchase - no subscription, no sign-up required, sync through any cloud service, all encryption (AES256) handled by your own device. Full feature desktop client is free. Mobile platforms run around $10 for the "pro" (i.e. full) version. Trial versions available.

Lots to like here. I've been using it for about 6 months. Zero problems to date.

So have you found a good alternative browser yet ;)

No...although (against my better judgement and personal philosophy) I find myself using Chrome (and Chrome derivatives) more and more as FF seems to want to freeze or get hung up more often than I'm willing to put up with. The only browser I get more annoyed with is Safari - which seems to have problems with everything lately. But since it's an Apple product, that's no surprise to me.

I'm kinda glad I don't spend one fiftieth as much time online as I used to. If I were as heavy a user as I was formerly was, I'd be beside myself. The twenty minutes or so I'm online most days (these days) makes this web nonsense marginally easier to put up with.

FWIW, if MSoft ever gets their act together with Win10 (which they will...eventually) their newest browser looks to be moving into position to be the most promising of the lot. But only time will tell.

P.S. If you know of a better browser, or one you're currently having luck with that also runs under NIX - please let me know!

I sense a little circling of the wagons at work here. But I'm hoping I'm wrong.

However...

Requiring an extension be certified before it will work (in the name of "better security" for end-users) just the old walled garden argument once again. I'm pretty disgusted to hear Mozilla saying it. But Mozilla is like so many other "open" projects that woke up one day and realized they were (theoretically) giving away a few million and not seeing much in return money-wise. Do I detect a hint that they're having some hopes Google will buy them out eventually?

Time was when the open project crowd had more faith in their users - as well as considerably more respect. The philosophy used to be: "We can only advise. You're free to do whatever you want - including completely borking your system if you choose not to listen to our advice. It's your system and your decision - not ours."

Now it seems that Mozilla (having previously decided - after much faux hand-wringing - to cave in and embed DRM support in FF) has now determined that their users also need a nanny.

My but how times have changed!

(It's enough to make me sick.) >:(

The first game that ships with a built-in expiration condition? And gets the purchasers to go along with it?

Brilliant marketing move if nothing else. Helps create a steady market for future games, rather than have whole cultures grow up around extremely successful ones like some have. Cuts down on resales and future bootlegging too. Wonder how many other games will eventually have similar tombstones built into them...

Or am I just being cynical right now? ;)

In my new machine I've got 1 SSD, and 3 6Gbps HDDs in a RAID5 array ... Guess which one is faster.. ;)

...and guess which one is significantly more expensive for the storage obtained - and which will likely need to be replaced sooner?

(Sorry. Couldn't resist - even though an SSD is a fine thing to add to a system. :P  ;))

Once performance is adequately addressed it's time to think about convenience. For the last 5 or so years I've made it my practice to almost always max out the installed RAM. With servers in a multiuser environment, it's definitely the way you want to go.

…In years past I always built my own...but I just don't have time to do all the research necessary to effectively play the price point razor edge of leading/cutting edge hardware…

Et tu Stoic?

Same here. Unless it's something that's being purpose built, customization makes more sense than custom-building these days. The 'bang for the buck' is usually very competitive or better than a custom build would be. And you get a warranty. Plus a copy of Windows (if you're still using it :P) at the cheapest price point that's generally available.

But that's part of the ageing process I guess. Unnecessarily sweating technical details and pulling ones hair out no longer seems as much fun as it used to for some odd reason.

Anyway, that box sounds pretty sweet. Rock it for all it's worth.

While Eli explains things clearly, he over-uses repetition in my opinion. These introduction video's could be 75% shorter if he didn't use repetition so much. Not sure if this is only the case in his introduction videos.

Although he should be commended for the amount of helpful videos he's made, the repetition thing kinda ruins it for me.

He does get a little gabby - as I warned. And he most certainly could reduce his runtime if he weren't so obviously winging it. But so it goes. (Far be it from me to ever criticize someone else for being overly wordy. I could never be that much of a hypocrite. :-[ )

His info is accurate however. And the price is certainly right. So I continue to watch his stuff even though I'll admit I'm usually also doing something else while I am for exactly that reason.  ;)

They're a little "gabby" but still pretty good.

Note: if it's just you - and only you - who will ever be accessing the server, you can also simply grant Full Control permission for the Everyone group across the board and be done with it.

O_O ... Ggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

I knew that'd getcha! ;D ;D ;D

Oh!...Hey!...You ok? Here...just sit a moment and take some deep breaths!
349
whoa 40...I like where you are headed with this.  I don't understand hypervisor yet, other than it means a virtual machine, lol.

There's two general approaches to virtualization. One method (Type-1) is a bare metal installation with all OSs managed and running under a hypervisor - which is basically just a framework environment for hosting operating systems. Examples would be Xen or Microsoft's Hyper-V. (Think: hardware ---> hypervisor ---> hosted OS)

Type-2 hypervisors are installed under an operating system, and abstract the system resources of that OS to allow virtual machines to run under it. Virtualbox works like that, as does WMWare's workstation. (Think: hardware ---> host OS ---> hypervisor ---> hosted OS)

There are also hybrids like Proxmox, so it can get a little confusing.

Of the two approaches, the Type-1 is a more elegant solution. Type-2 can sometimes be less ideal because the host OS that the hypervisor is running under can crash thereby simultaneously taking down all the VMs running under it as well. So the type-1 hypervisor is better for a VM server, whereas the type-2 is (to me) better suited for running turnkey applications - or virtual workstations - as opposed to servers.

You mention DAW...are you saying that you are going to be comfortable running a DAW on some kind of vm?

It would be fun to try, but I don't think I'm quite that ballsy enough to do it with a production DAW just yet. So I'd probably set up such a machine to dual boot and also probably use a swap-able boot HD to do it at this point.
