General Software Discussion / Re: IE8 on the loose!
« Last post by nite_monkey on March 21, 2009, 04:59 PM »
which web browsers use the temporary internet files folder? Everytime I run IE8 and then close it, I will get a virus warning from avast in the temp internet files folder, and another one in the sysWOW64 folder. (I don't remember what the one in the temp folder is, but the virus in the syswow64 folder is something like 168659.exe or something like that) I dropped back to IE7 in hopes that this problem is resolved. If it helps any, when I used IE8, I never when to any sites that I didn't go to in IE7 or in chrome for that matter

So far the only thing I have found of use to it compared to IE7 is it seems to be slightly faster (though I haven't used IE7 or 8 that much anyways) So overall I think it is a pretty good improvement, but I can't say much until I use IE8 more.

I went ahead and downloaded after I made that post, I guess I will go ahead and install it. Chances are, no more than I use IE, I probably wont have any problems with it.

I like the website design, and I love the screenshot popups. I may end up downloading p2edit.

so is it worth downloading, or should I just stick with chrome and IE7

This is a pretty cool idea.
It could be done better though by taking a screen recorder (I use Camtasia studio 6) and then open and resize notepad to a small size and record yourself typing.
You could also change the font to what ever you want, and then you can open it in camtasia's editor and save it as a gif.

Ive been using Everything for a couple of months now, and I love it. I can type in "ph sh cs3." (without the quotes) and it finds photoshop cs3. I can find almost anything on my computer really fast.

I believe it is worthy of adding to my rss reader. I read some of the posts, and for the most part, they are pretty good.

I don't know if anyone has ran accross this, but I found it on pulseaudio's website.pulseaudio for windows I haven't tried it, because on my old computer it wouldn't work in ubuntu, and I don't have a need for it on my new computer in windows... I think

Seems that the power management from your monitor is on the fritz. After it is showing the expected signal, does it remain functioning ok?
yes, after it finally manages to turn on, it works fine.
If I leave it turned off, or in standby mode for longer than like 10 or 15 minutes than try to turn it on, it wont for a while. All that happens is the light blinks for about 1 to 2 minutes, and then the monitor turns on and displays what is on the screen...
Am I fixing to loose my second monitor ?

if you're experience is anything like mine, then *yes*.

i had exactly these symptoms on two samsung lcds.. eventually they progressed to worse stages, where they would never get very bright, and then eventually stopped turning on completely.
well crap, mine is still at the beginning stage, I don't want to have to get a new one... I just got this one because my crt died on me.

holy crap! I can't even solve the regular 3x3x3 cube. I would hate to try solving that one :o

Recently my secondary display (acer AL1916) has started messing up. If I leave it turned off, or in standby mode for longer than like 10 or 15 minutes than try to turn it on, it wont for a while. All that happens is the light blinks for about 1 to 2 minutes, and then the monitor turns on and displays what is on the screen. The monitor is new to me, but not brand new. It used to be in the kitchen (for almost a year I think, I'm not sure.) This is only my second LCD display (my first being my primary display, which still works perfectly), so I don't know what an lcd monitor does when it is going out. Am I fixing to loose my second monitor for a while until I can get a new one?

I was surfing the forums, and I ran across the warning message that google chrome gives when the site you are visting contains malware.
dc malware.jpg
here is the page that gives the warning.

edit: upon further inspection, I have found the culprit. The user TOOWILD has an avatar that triggers that warning, because of where they are hosting the image from

I personally don't like to spend a crap load on mice, all I need is my handy dandy el cheapo Logitech cordless internet pro, and boy is it old. You can't even find it on logitech's website anymore (at least I couldn't find it). I wish I had a right handed thumb trackball though.

wow, I just installed Fence, and I love it already! I use my desktop as my workspace, so this is good for organizing my big mess

VMware View Open Client lets you connect from a Linux desktop to remote Windows desktops managed by VMware View. It is available under the GNU Lesser General Public License version 2.1 (LGPL v 2.1).
I got that from the google code page where you download the client. You do have to buy the vmware view, and you have to run linux, because this client isn't for windows

Avast gives me a warning when trying to visit the fake sites, be careful guys!
avast flipped out when I just visited this forum topic.
346
I just thought of something.
I'm using a Memorex cd-rw disc, that wouldn't have anything to do with corrupt installs would it?
I will soon find out, because I am burning opensuse right now.

edit: well opensuse(net install) just stops about half way through the loading process, and debian (net isntall) wont detect all my hardware. I guess I will just have to use wubi, and leave windows 7 on my other drive.
347
If you intend to dual-boot the machine and it has Windows on it already, I highly recommend Wubi. It's 1 MB and it downloads and installs Ubuntu from within Windows. I'm a total linux noob too, but I just installed Ubuntu today with Wubi and it worked fantastically. It also allows you to uninstall Ubuntu from Add/Remove Programs in Windows. It's a great utility for Windows users who are total noobs to linux.

Just for reference, I recently started a thread about Fedora 9 in which I ultimately chose to go with Ubuntu, and Wubi was how I did it.

oh yeah, I forgot about wubi. I didn't want to dual boot linux though, so I have an old 80gb drive that I have in my computer, and I just unplug my other drives and have only that drive plugged in. I'm going to check the md5 on my images and see what I come up with.

edit: md5 is the same for the images.
I'm downloading opensuse right now. I'll see what it does.
If I can't get it to install then currently the only linux I will have on my computer is the splashtop that is built into my asus motherboard
348
...Wow, I need to find someone else to come up with titles for me.
Anyways, before I begin, I would like to point out that when it comes to linux, I am a complete noob.
With that said, I would like to attempt to learn how to use linux. My problem is, I have burned a Ubuntu disc, but when I try to use it, I get an error message.
If I try to click the live cd, install Ubuntu, or check for defects options, the system just sits there for a couple of minutes, and then pops up with a box that says "I/O error" with a restart button. I have burned the cd with several different programs, and all times it messed up. I have also tried both ubuntu 8.04 x64 and ubuntu 8.10 x64, both give the same error. I googled the problem, and people have suggested to try to burn the cd on a different computer, but I don't really think that would help much, because I have been able to use my 8.04 image on my old computer with no problems.

So what I am asking here is if anyone knows of either how to fix this problem(I will still probably look on google a little more) or a different noob friendly linux distro.
I would almost prefer I different noob friendly distro, because I have used Ubuntu in a virtual machine a little, and would like to try out something different.

General Software Discussion / Re: what does the progress bar in super mean?

@fenixproductions lol, I hadn't even noticed that. (where'd my account go?, lol)
@Hirudin, I dunno, it may have something to do with that, but the video I was converting was a single wmv file that I recorded with my webcam.

All the progress bars take about the same time.

What exactly does the progress bar in super mean? (the one that pops up when encoding a file)
It can't show how much of the video it has encoded, because the bar will go all the way to the end and then back to the start about 4 or 5 times.
So what exactly is the purpose of the progress bar?
