I quite like and dislike this idea all at the same time. I like the way everything is split at the moment, and would look at less if it were all tucked away in separate discussion. What I'd really like to see would be tags :D  or filters. So we could look at topics by OS if we wanted and it would just show the relevant topics within the forum we are currently browsing.

I'm with Dormouse on this.  If you provide an area for iOS/OSX, for instance, the Mac folk (both of 'em  ;D) will tend to congregate there.  Ditto for Linux, Mobile, whatever.  Methinks ye'd loose the cross-fertilization that occurs so often now.  Since I use tags a lot on a daily basis, I'm naturally in favor of the tag concept  ;).  Admittedly, tags would likely be a lot more difficult to implement.  But I really believe you'd start to see clique-ish behaviours (much like the way all the varied Linux distros have fragmented the Linux community) if you separate the software and living room discussions by OS groupings.

Very cool, and pretty scary.

Wonder how a recording from a UPS-powered recording device would fare?

I'd like to see that language ... compiled Kama Sutra  :-\ :P.

isn't that assembly?

Or interactive Masters & Johnson?

General Software Discussion / Re: WSOD
« Last post by barney on December 13, 2012, 06:37 PM »
Hm-m-m ... I may be experiencing the same thing - or at least something similar.

I'm currently using MyInfo as a recording PIM.  On a regular basis it whites out, and only time will revive it (five to fifteen minutes).  At times, during this white-out, the screen cursor is totally immovable, but that normally lasts only a short period.

Diagnostics don't tell me anything, nor do any of the analysis softwares I've run.  I've pretty well traced it down to MyInfo saving the open databases & making backups thereof.  Still trying to analyze, so I disabled the automatic backups - has made a significant difference, but has not eliminated the problem.  (I do get a not responding in the title bar.)

After the initial lockup (period variable), I can get to other software that is open, or even open new software.  Eventually, MyInfo wakes up and everything seems kosher again.  Dunno if any of this will help, but you might take a look at what the software is doing - or supposed to be doing - when the WSOD occurs.

Oh, this is on Win7 Ulitmate 64-bit, i7 CPU, 6.00 GB RAM, Toshiba Satellite laptop.  MyInfo is, to the best of my knowledge, 32-bit.

There are a truckload of fun languages out there, but what is the coolest one?

Simple.  The coolest language is the one (1) I [am able to] use.  All the rest are {junk|overblown|(your descriptive here)}  :P.

My wife got a Galaxy SIII a few weeks ago. The phone has worked just fine for her, but battery life OOTB hasn't been stellar. Granted she doesn't charge it daily (not a heavy user), and only mentioned the battery life thing once ... so it may not actually be that bad.

The owners of our company (both droide fanatics) both got a Galaxy SIII last weekend. But I'm on vacation so I'm not (going to ask...:)) sure how there getting along with them.

Battery life on my SIII is not stellar, but then, I've got wi-fi running all day, once in a while bluetooth/GPS.  (GPS on land, not so great  :-\- GPS on the bay, a bit more important  ;).)  Anyway, I charge it every night as a matter of course, so doesn't really hurt me.

Anyone else ever do this? Step back. Chill. Meditate. Come back and solve a critical issue?

Not certain I'd call it meditation (dunno that I'd know how  :P), but otherwise that scenario is very familiar - has been a lifesaver at times.

Stephen66515 and 40hz prolly have the right of it.

Personally, I developed a distaste for Apple products in the early nineteen eighties.  Their product was way overpriced - if they'd had a reasonable price point, the IBM XT would never have got off the ground.  (And they still overcharge for their products.)  Then, later, I knew a few folk who developed software for the Apple hardware - and the hoops through which they had to jump were ghastly.  So I've never been able to develop any affinity for the Apple brand.  But, as mentioned, that's a personal thing, not necessarily relevant to the DC forums.  (And their walled garden penchant seems to be contagious  :P.)

I've been happy with the Galaxy SIII (Android v4.x), so far.  A bit large, but, then, so are my hands, so it fits  :P.  Seen some pretty good reports on the HTC, but don't know anyone who has the beastie.

Well, it's 12-12-12 today. Anyone care what the order of the year, month and day is? :D

So for luck I left the house at 12. Got to the store and played 12 lottery tickets at 12:12. Picked all sorts of fun numbers. Fibonacci numbers. Prime numbers. Birthdays. Ages. Random numbers. Squares, roots, powers of 2, etc. Spent $12.10.

Strolled over to the grocery store for some cereal and milk. Spent $21.02.

I'm feeling lucky today~! ;D

So, by the time I get to all twelves, you already have used everything up.  Greedy  :P :P :P.

Living Room / Re: It's about ... why is the left seat the command seat?
« Last post by barney on December 09, 2012, 01:16 PM »
LOL!   I can still remember this question from ground school and flight training.  The pilot sits on the left seat because the default air-traffic pattern is left, therefore the pilot can see the runway better on the downwind leg of the pattern.

That makes sense ... and begs another question  :P.

My early grounding in formal English was also reinforced by the military.  One does not always equal 1, but one (1) does.

That just terrifies me.  :o

Why?  Sometimes one is used in a nominative sense, e.g., "One does what one must," where the numeric meaning does not apply.  Adding the parenthetical value makes clear what the usage should be, or, at least, what usage was intended.

General Software Discussion / Re: Circumventing UEFI/SecureBoot on a new PC
« Last post by barney on December 07, 2012, 12:59 PM »
If secure boot is on you cannot boot from an optical drive. Secure boot limits you to only booting from the Secure boot drive.

That sounds a maintenance nightmare ... drive dies, system bricked.

With the helicopter thing it may be less ingrained since it takes off vertically. You don't have to drive it down a runway to get up speed.

Now that's a valid point .  One that I'd not have considered, otherwise.  Thanks .

Yeah, I overlooked choppers, but I've seen as many with left controllers as right ... doesn't seem to make much difference to those pilots.  When I was in Southeast Asia (many moons agone), I saw as many left seaters as right seaters ... assume(d) it was personal preference, although it might have been accommodation to the bird's construction.  Still damned curious, though.

Living Room / It's about ... why is the left seat the command seat?
« Last post by barney on December 06, 2012, 08:17 PM »
OK, I've looked at this before, but w/o a definitive answer.

Just finished watching Starship Troopers, the first of a [so far] trilogy on film of R A Heinlein's book of the same name.  It occurred to me that they - the film makers - always put the command pilot in the left seat.  US film, US habits, I suppose, but the question is why?

I can understand the English/UK/Europe folk making the [wheeled vehicle] right side the command side, considering the history [and forms] of combat there.  But why is it [I thimk] universal today than the command pilot sits in the left seat?  I've tried to research this in the past, several times, but never derived a definitive answer.

So, anyone here have that definitive answer?  Or even a clue or pointer as to the why?

I'm not gonna lose sleep over it - I hope! - but I'm damned curious.

re: FUD - I did try it. Loaded it on a non-touch PC and had at it for the better part of a week. And I'm still unimpressed with the new interface and general changes in how to do things. It seems very unnecessary to me. Old wine in a new bottle. Different mostly to be different.

Which is a shame because the improvements under the hood seem pretty solid.

But I guess if you pulled the touch nonsense and Metro out of the equation they'd be stuck calling it Windows 7 - Service Pack 2 wouldn't they?

And where's the money and buzz in that? :P

I had much the same experience using the pre-rtm release in a virtual machine.
However, old wine, regardless the container, can be pretty damned good  :P.
So I've ordered a Lenovo Yoga, so as to get the touch experience, see whether arthritic hands and an old brain can handle the new processes and concepts  :-\ :P.

What I want to know is whether I can be sued for having a gene they patent - litigation seems to be the order of the day.

And, if they do sue, and I loose, does that mean I'd have to have that gene removed?

If so, who pays for my surgery/funeral?!?  Presumably, that would be me, since I happened to possess the offending gene  :P.

Would prior use count - assuming I'm older than the corp. that patented my gene?

Just a few surface thoughts  :-\.
