Fodder - I actually downloaded VS Express not too long ago, as I used to program in VB and ASP and wanted to see what was new. Suffice it to say, I was kind of over my head in the new environment. Plus, I've never known anything about C or C#.

I also wasn't sure this project could be built using the Express version of the tools.

I just tried Auspex and I liked what I saw, congrats!

Any chance of a portable version? As I see only the setting files are added to the system, those could be easily migrated to the program directory I guess. A switch would also do (e.g. Auspex.exe /settingsdir=./Settings or just Settings).

Thank you! I can make a portable version with pleasure. I'm working on a new release after a couple of recent bug reports  :o so I'll see if I can get this going for you.

If MLO outputs XML, you can use XSL to turn it into any layout you like. With some effort, of course. No doubt there are folks on here who can help. There's also some pretty good software out there that can get you started.

Stylus Studio springs to mind.

If you have CSV I would say some pretty simple regex to split up the lines and add some formatting would not be too bad either.

Lastly of course you could request someone on here to write something for you.

Which would win the race if setting up a new machine, from scratch, to provide (say) were performed by 'experts' at installing each OS.

Say barebones of: working network connection to the interweb, browser, email, Word processor, Spreadsheet, etc. - basically everything the average schmoe would want.

Windows 7? Linux? OS/X?

- I'm at the point where I simply have no good reason to do it, which is quite sad. Got a nice backup server, nice media server, my dev machines have to be Windows... what is left?

I do have to agree with what you say too... but this same person has a PC, internet connection, is well-fed, housed, educated... implying there are always options. I think mouser hit the nail on the head: too 'hassley' somehow.

... or the person is a kid, in which case good - let's catch 'em young  8)

I have to admit, I only had a quick look. But just as DC has a nice reviews section, which is well worth reading, does it also have a section where folks can post mini-articles on "how I did such-and-such?"

This popped into my head after reading superboyac's thread on setting up a simple shared todo list between two users. Sounds to me like an ideal case of saying "well, if you download and install software abc, and then use service def to map a secure shared drive, off you go - and this is how to do it"

That would make a really nice little article that I think quite a few people (including me, a few months back) could really make use of. There's some top-notch expertise on here and I can envisage not only coding snack requests, but perhaps requests for coding help and generally getting more out of one's computing experience.

Off the top of my head, I could think of some other How-To's+Recommendations that I'd love to see:

  • How to create a VM from your current PC
  • How to set up a nice unattended daily backup
  • How to organise your email more efficiently
  • How to get the most from DC  :Thmbsup:
  • How to get started with Regular Expressions
  • etc. etc.

Certainly some of Paul Keith's posts fall into a similar category.

Re: setting up a VPN, I actually must've been really lucky. I had it up and running in a few minutes under Win2K3. Then a little script on each client to automatically connect to a shared drive on there, and we were off to the races.

I really like that idea, but I think it might go against the motto that people who can't pay could have access to a fully-working copy. Personally I really like the "tell us how we can improve our software (or site?) and get a 6-month working key" option, it might bring some nice karma.

It's probably just me, but I dislike those online collaboration sites. Unless it's installed on my PC, and shared on my VPN, I'm paranoid that one day it will all be lost.

Plus they all have that same soft, flabby Appley look don't they?  :P

There's this one: Task Merlin (paid) which I actually like quite a lot. It has todo's and a shared calendar.

Of course there's also OneNote, which supports rudimentary ToDo lists, and I really like. It's very smooth in use.

But I bet there are loads more - although finding one that truly shares its db really whittles the field down, I've found.

I think pledges are essential in this context. We're showing the world how active we are, how much goes on in DC. It's like the annual village fete that raises money for the church roof. You gather together, have fun, do silly things, win trivia, all in a good cause. And all powered by people who have pledged to join in and make it happen by being pro-active.

Compare and contrast if someone were simply sitting in a field with a coin box saying, "please donate to the church roof" *rattle rattle* as the traffic whizzes past.

I'd use less deprecating language for this item. DC is great! Something along the lines of "Tell your friends! DC can take a while to explore and we rely on word of mouth to help people get started. Let people know what's new, what's good, and that it's all worth supporting"
