Living Room / Samsung unveils 32GB Flash-based HDD killer
« Last post by mouser on March 21, 2006, 04:18 PM »
This is surely the future of hard drives..

Samsung has launched what it reckons its the world's first 32GB NAND Flash-based hard disk drive replacement unit. The company claimed the so-called "solid state disk" can access data three times faster than an HDD can and write files one-and-a-half times more quickly - though we don't know what HDD spec it was comparing its product to.
The SSD is a 2.5in form-factor product that operates at 5V and connects across a 66MHz Ultra DMA parallel ATA bus. Samsung said the unit consumes just five per cent of the energy it takes to run a hard drive.

I fully expect this post to take on a life of its own. So, I’d like to start it with a disclaimer. Peter, Ryan, Jason… if you end up reading this, know that I respect all of you tremendously. I believe you pour your hearts and souls into what you do, and deserve every bit of success that’s come your way. Well, almost every bit. Know that I bear no hard feelings, but the time has come for the truth to come out, and this is my contribution to that end.

For the last nine months or so, I have harbored a dispute with Engadget, and until now I have kept relatively quiet. This is the gist. I believe (I’m convinced beyond doubt, really) the writers at Engadget maintain a blacklist. They will obstinately refuse to credit any story that originates (in the relatively fuzzy meaning that the word “originates” has in the Blogosphere) from one of the sites on the blacklist, often preferring to wait quite some time until the same story pops up elsewhere, and then crediting that non-blacklisted site. Sometimes, they will go to even greater lengths to uphold the ban, stepping out of the realm of the unpleasant and squarely into the realm of the unethical. This has happened recently to DAPreview, and lucky for them, they have proof.

i was referring to the author.
i agree that there is no one approach for all problems, though as an avid oop fan i think most non-trivial programming tasks are well suited to oop methods.

i completely and vigorously object to the idea that oop is only for group programming.

the more people you have looking at code the more important it is that it is better modularized, but saying that's the only time to use oop is like saying that a filing strategy helps organize stuff when you work in an office with lots of people, so when you are home you should just throw your papers on the floor randomly.

here is that authors full website against oop for those who didn't read through to the end of his article: http://www.geocities.../tablizer/oopbad.htm
hmm.. i think this guy had a bad psychological reaction to oop when he was a baby.. maybe his ex-girlfriend was an oop fan.

now there are some more sophisticated attacks of oop than this guys, centering on new programming paradigms like "Aspect Oriented Programming" - http://en.wikipedia....oriented_programming

thought provoking but ultimately extremely unconvincing to me.
i guess part of it might be a style issue, and i'll leave it to someone better at writing (and someone who isn't up to his eyeballs coding the donationcredits system) to dissect it, but really i think it misses all of the important features of object oriented programming.

what people have to realize is that ultimately, all code is compiled down into a very low level language like assembly.

everything else is just stuff on top to help you as a human organize your data and code in a way that makes it easier for you to write and maintain.

to me, over almost two decates, object oriented programming has represented a profoundly positive framework for organizing code and data structures.  it changes the way i plan solutions, conceive of problems, etc.  i can't imagine trying to keep complex programs organized without using it.

welcome to the site alxwz.
i think your points are both well taken.

im guessing that zaine would say of the archive review that winrar would not have won if it was defficient in any of the non-rar features- it's only because winrar excels at everything plus has rar format that allowed it to win.  however i share your much less optimistic take on the rar format, and i would agree that from my perspective i would not give it the weight had i been writing the review myself.  but then everyone has their differences in views of what's important..

regarding the email reviews - it's so hard to avoid missing some programs, there are just so many in every category, but you're right, we need to do more of a group effort to make sure the reviews have covered all the programs before they go live.  the problem here is similar to the problem with IMAP, which is simply that the reviews take a huge amount of effort and time and the reviewer isn't always an expert in all areas.  again i think if we try to make the reviews more of a group effort we can try to fill in some of these gaps.

one thing we are starting to do which will make things a little easier is top focusing so much on one winner - but trying to focus more broadly on the top tier of programs and the pros and cons of those and who they would appeal to, which should make it a little easier to keep the reviews up to date.

see download link on the left.  let me know if you need any help.

jgpaiva that is exactly the kind of thing i was thinking in terms of people sharing their hierarchical categorization of apps, or else us helping to build such configurations (since their might be conflicts).

yeah that last line is sort of a workaround for a bug im having trouble getting rid of where sometimes the tray menu appears behind the system tray, so the last item gets hidden - so i put a blank line in case.  i have to fix it properly as that is not a pleasent solution.

addendum: somewhere in the banner should be a place where we can overlay the title of the current page.
an example from our current design:

banner_w_pagetitle.png

also note that cody likes to perch at the lower right of the banner so it should look good with him there..

ps.
im going to upload a sample html page for forum and site banners for you to try out your designs with, to see how they will actually look on the website.

Living Room / Re: Unprotected Wireless Lans?
« Last post by mouser on March 20, 2006, 11:28 AM »
hey this gave me a great idea for a perfect donationcoder.com coding snack!

what about a program designed to find unprotected wireless lans, and figures out a way to politely inform the admin that their network is unprotected, and sends them some links to info on how to protected it *IF* they want to, or else info about how to safely keep it unprotected in order to share open access if they want to keep it open.

what do you think? seems like a really nice idea to me.  we could call it Helpfull Snooper or something like that.

you have to realize that many (most) people sign up to download the free license keys, so its not so unusual that most of these people havent decided to participate in the forum.. yet..

but let's see if we can encourage at least 1 new person to make thier first post on this thread..
if you are reading this post and have not yet posted on the forum, why not post a reply to this thread and say hello right now? don't be scared we are all nice prople here :)
