General Software Discussion / Re: what kind of keyboard you use?
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 05:00 PM »
i have a logitech keyboard with a bunch of extra buttons on it.  the only thing i actually use on it however is the volume knob and mute button.  i definitely recommend a keyboard with these, it does come in handy.

you should be very proud gerome -
help pages are so important for a programming language and you are to be commended for spending so much time and effort on them.

is there a "what's new" post on your forum? maybe you could give us the link.  such posts are extremely helpful i think.

No one has to convince me that animals have a deeper social world and more robust consciousness than is generally accepted, but i was still blown away by this video and i think it is quite remarkable.

basically the video shows a squirrel whose legs were hurt (by shopping cart), who calls for help from his friend.

it is animal positive but involves a squirrel who has been hurt, so while it's not at all graphic, it could conceivably disturb you a little if seeing an animal in pain is too much for you. but the whole thing is quite uplifting and worth it i think

Official Announcements / Re: Revitalizing the Reviews - Everyone Read in Please
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 01:37 PM »
By the way, as far as reviews go, there are "reviews" and there are "shootouts".  The shootouts are A LOT of work.  Reviews aren't so bad.

basically our main full reviews are all shootouts, and as you say they are a LOT of work.  very few people can survive them with their sanity intact, and all who have attempted them have had a burnout period afterwards.

the single app "reviews" we have been calling "member mini-reviews"

we really do need to find a way to make it easier to do the full review shootouts..  there are several people working on a few of these now and they really take a lot out of you..

i had an idea recently:
what if we made the full shootout reviews a sort of product of the mini reviews?

for example, what if we said, ok this month we are going to do a full shootout of text editors. then asked users to write mini reviews and/or their comments about which program they think is best and why, with screenshots, movies, etc.

then it would be the job of one person to combine the most relevant aspects of the mini reviews to product a shootout summarizing them.  this is similar to the "What's the Best" child board in the review section (https://www.donation...index.php?board=78.0).

Screenshot Captor / Re: capture a menu and sub-menu
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 11:54 AM »
hi kevin,

just choose to capture a windows object from the menu or hotkeys - that will give you a red box that surrounds your menu which you can capture by following the onscreen menus.

let us know how it works for you or if you have any further problems.

Post New Requests Here / Re: request crypt for dc++
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 11:31 AM »
Hi Geust,

I wish i had time to do more porting of mircryption stuff; crypto algorithm programming is one of those things that coders just enjoy.

however, because dc++ does not use irc protocol, there is no need for mircrption or blowfish compatibility, so i think it's a better idea to do a dc++ homemade encryption plugin, perhaps just using lua.  and it's not really in my area of expertise.

do let us know however if you find a good solution to it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why subscription-models for software suck
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 11:19 AM »
carol, yep - not only that but it's also counter productive because you have to ask yourself, do i really want to be on this path of high upgrade costs every year, and risk the possibility that the author is going to up the price even more.  i'd rather spend my money on a product where the author is more focused on treating their customers as friends.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why subscription-models for software suck
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 09:55 AM »
I agree that the arbitrary year-based subscription models are bad, except perhaps for things like antivirus programs where you are really paying for the continuous updating of the virus definitions.

its reasonable to pay for major version upgrades and keep normal updates and bugfixes free.

a good rule of thumb for me is that a user should never have to pay for a bug fix.

so if a program is updated to fix some bugs, that update should be free, regardless of purchase date.

the other thing that bothers me is the sometimes very high upgrade prices.  it seems to me that upgrading should really be a very minimal fee, maybe 25% or at most 50%.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Tweak Tool?
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2006, 05:39 AM »
i'd love to hear about what people think is best tweaking tool as well..
my top converns are:
  • safety - it should prevent me from making any irreversible damage and help me to undo bad setting changes
  • help - i want such a tool to explain the settings to me as much as let me change them.

ps.
moerl, i feel your pain.  i've learned when writing long posts to do like i've learned to do with any big writing - save it periodically (to clipboard or worst case a screenshot).

ps. screenshot captor is in real need of some good torn-edge frames. the support is already there for it, just requires someone to make the graphics files for it.

Living Room / Living for 41 hours in Wal-Mart
« Last post by mouser on March 27, 2006, 12:28 PM »
Kid lives 41 hours in Wal-Mart store.

Skyler Bartels kept looking over his shoulder. It's a habit he picked up living at the Windsor Heights Wal-Mart for three days.
Really living there. Eating, sleeping, checking out the DVDs, never leaving. The plan was to spend his entire spring break there. Under the radar.

nice article on add-a-voice-recorder-to-your-webpage services

record and publish voice recordings has a number of features that allow it to stand out from the “click, record” crowd.
...
This young space is already crowded - competitors include Odeo, Springdoo, YackPack, Waxmail and others (of these, Odeo clearly has the branding lead). I can see each of these companies struggling to find the right business model, feature mix and consumer messaging. Evoca has a strong case for getting it at least mostly right.

i agree with hirudin - if you have to burn files that might be too long, just compress them with some zip or rar tool first, and burn that archive file, then it doesnt matter if the filename of the archive gets truncated, becase it will recover the original filename when you unpack it.
