Best Firewall / Re: agnitum outpost v3 - the horror?
« Last post by mouser on April 04, 2006, 06:51 PM »
I've been using it for several months and I'm happy with it.
It's not perfect (i still have an annoying problem using plain old internet explorer, and vmware requires some tricks to make work properly) but it's still the best i've seen, and i still very much like its general design.

so i would definitely recommend outpost as my firewall of choice, BUT i would still highly recommend trying it out for a while before making a purchase, to make sure it's right for you.

i do not use the antispyrware plugins so i cant comment on those - i might start using them at some point, i think it's not a bad idea.

General Software Discussion / Re: How necessary is a software firewall?
« Last post by mouser on April 04, 2006, 05:48 PM »
i wouldn't even think about not using a software firewall.

it adds a very real an substantial layer of protection.

my own view is that if you keep your operating system up to date there is probably not that much INCOMING protection that you need.  but a software firewall can offer a good first line of defense from programs that connect out when you don't expect them to.

if you install a truly evil program, the outgoing blocking of a firewall isn't going to help you much, but for most cases a firewall gives you a good first warning that you're dealing with software that is trying to connect out to the internet unexpectedly, or in ways you didn't expect.

if you are someone who likes to know what programs on your computer are doing, then a firewall is a great information tool, just to let you know who is connecting out or in.

if you are annoyed by programs popping up asking permission, most software firewalls now have an auto-configure mode which will create rules for your automatically for well known programs.

I have no real need for this tool.

you've obviously forgotten about this:

PC Pitstop offered a financial incentive in its EULA, and it took four months before anyone responded.

i think in general, once you get hit with some real malicious software (not simple adware), then really the only safe solution is a complete reinstall or rollback.

which is why EVERYONE should have a plan in place for this.  Assume you are going to have a hard drive crash and/or bad issue, and have a plan for restoring your computer.  get together the info you need to do this - perpare a list of your main software and serials, a list of any customizations you've done to your pc, etc. anything you would need to recreate if you had to recover from a disaster.

With the price of pcs these days, it may even pay to buy another computer to get some experience recreating your system from scratch if it's been a few years since you've done so.

just edit the duplicate and ask that a moderator delete it.
i think there is also a button on each thread to "report post to moderator" which you can use, which is probably the best way.

Living Room / Re: Why Macs Suck
« Last post by mouser on April 04, 2006, 11:20 AM »
in case anyone gets the wrong opinion, i'm not a mac hater.  I haven't used OSX much but it seems like a really nice approach.  And you can't help but be impressed with some of the stuff Apple has done.  I do have some issues with the focus on marketing and keeping their systems "closed."

but my main view about operating systems is i hate them all equally :)  i'm still waiting for a nice clean and elegant new operating system..

Living Room / Magneto flash escape-the-room game
« Last post by mouser on April 04, 2006, 06:16 AM »
Another great flash game find from the website Jay Is Games

Magneto Syndrome is a point and click room escape game created by Juliano Reina. The main character has been infused with the power to control metallic objects. He regains consciousness and his first thought is to escape. It's going to prove a little difficult, seeing as how he's stuck inside a water-filled tube. Using his powers of magnetic manipulation, it's your job to help him make his run for freedom.

note this has some violence and language so not for the young kiddies.

 Hacking Network Printers

Hack a printer you say, what kind of toner have you been smoking, Irongeek? Well, I’m here to tell you, there’s more that can be done with a printer to compromise network security than one might realize. In the olden days a printer may not have been much of a concern other than the threat from folks dumpster diving for hard copies of the documents that were printed from it, but many modern printers come network aware with embedded Operating Systems, storage and full IP stacks. This article will attempt to point out some of the more interesting things that can be done with a network based printer to make it reveal information about its users, owners and the network it's part of.

as far as the crashing - the right click should bring up the shell menu.. can you see if your normal windows explorer crashes on right click of similar images?

there are probably a million of these things (hell allen whipped one up by hand for codycards!) and it's not the most beautiful, but it does work and requires almost no configuration, uses no database, and automatically caches thumbnails, so its useful for quickie stuff.

General Software Discussion / Re: Review of File Renamers — let's make a list
« Last post by mouser on April 04, 2006, 12:12 AM »
regular expression search and replace is quite important -
allen here is an expert on them, and so are some others.  would be nice to have them make some early comments on how well the top contenders do on regex before you make up your mind about top candidates.

id say with such a big field, any renamer without good regex support should probably not get the top nod.
