Living Room / Re: Different results from DC search
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2006, 09:55 PM »
i noticed what i think is the cause of this:
try placing the string in double quotes in search box, i.e. "ShoutcastConcierge" instead of ShoutcastConcierge.

the simplemachines.org smf search function is one of the few areas of the forum software that needs real improvement.

General Software Discussion / Re: Find and Run Robot got an Award

DonationCredits has just delayed v2 a little since it took over a month of solid coding, but it's all for the better, sometimes you just have to wait until all the ideas coallesce and fit together.  v2 of farr is coming, have no doubt - it's just waiting till it's time.

Borland C++ Builder Contest / Re: Entering SMIRF 8x8 + 10x8 Chess Program
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2006, 06:52 AM »
i removed the download links (you can just uncheck them).

with regards to this:
A new question is, how to find the correct category for SMIRF Chess: 'Large Program' or 'Game or Diversion' ?

no need to worry about this question, programs can be elligible for multiple categories - judges will consider them in all appropriate categories.

Developer's Corner / Re: How to use transparent png properly even in IE 6 (!)
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2006, 06:07 AM »
nudone is right - that fix in the page above can fail if you have some active scripting or other settings in ie disabled.
32132
i think we could still use a couple of fun DonationCredit buttons images for this if anyone wants to give it a try.
maybe something like this:

but more explicit about "click to donate to author"

General Software Discussion / Ten video sharing services compared
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2006, 05:46 AM »
The number of video-sharing sites has shot through the roof recently, as dozens of companies try to become the Flickr of the online video world.  To this end, many video services have started offering new features like editing and remixability in an attempt to snatch a piece of the ever-expanding online video pie.  But for the average user--who just wants to post a video on the 'net and share it with some friends--there are already too many options out there.  All one really wants to know is, which site is going to work, with the least amount of hassle?
I took 10 of these sites out for a test drive, and picked some winners.  If you want to post, watch, share, or edit video online, this post's for you...

Developer's Corner / How to use transparent png properly even in IE 6 (!)
« Last post by mouser on April 11, 2006, 03:25 AM »
This site is all about a JavaScript-based PNG fix for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6 on Windows. The fix allows IE to properly render PNG alpha transparency. If you want to get straight to the script, go to the how-to page and follow the instructions there. If you have the time for a description and demo of the problem, then read on...

We've added new "menu" item in profile options to help you add a link from your webpage directly to your DonationCredits Donation Page, to make it easy for your visitors to make a donation to you with confidence.

Click "Profile and Membership" in tabs above and look under DonationCredits.

You will see a new item "Make Buttons/Links"

Click it for a sample and html code you can cut and past into your web page, which will link people directly to your profile on the DonationCredits donation page.

Remember, your Donation Page lets people donate to you not just using DonationCredits and micro-donations, but also easily and directly using Paypal or any other links you have configured.  And it also helps spread the word about DonationCoder.com.

You'll also find instructions their on how to configure your donation blurb and external donation links.

We hope this gives you a way to:
  • show your pride in donationcoder.com
  • let donators have a choice how to donate
  • show donators that you are part of an honest donation-based movement
  • put a recognizable donation symbol on your pages (we suggest upper left of your web pages).

if you add the link to your page and feel like letting us know about it, please do post a followup post here :)

Podcast Radio Show / Podcast Audio Radio Show - Upcoming Show Planning
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2006, 09:47 PM »
I thought we should start a thread for discussions rather than having a long discussion on announcement board:

https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3157.0

I'd love to hear some interviews with freeware developers and other rogues.  be irreverent and make it fun :)
32142
i set up an official page for the podcasts, when they go online: http://podcast.donationcoder.com
32143
i'd also like to hear some creative entries - like some man-on-the-street interviews.

how about going out on the street or making random phone calls and asking people:
1) whats your favorite program?
2) have you heard of donationcoder.com?
3) whats your most hated crashing program?
4) what new program do you wish existed?
5) do you know what freeware/donationware/opensource software is?
6) whats your favorite website?

get creative!!
32144
some more random thoughts:

you should begin your segment with:

"This is XXXX from YYYY, reporting for DonationCoder.com"
where XXXX is your name and/or forumname (always specify your forum name so people can know who you are on the forum), and YYYY is some description of your location (i.e. australia, china, bob's bakery, the basement of my parents house, etc).

and sign off in a similar way with your own special catchphrase.

32145
thanks marionjoe, and welcome to the site.
32146
this might be too much to hope for, but ideally we would have a podcast every 2 weeks, to coincide with the newsletters, and one segment each show would be devoted to talking about the highlights of the newsletter (best posts, etc).
32147
Let's set some deadlines here to make sure we get what we need in time.

Submission deadline for audio segments: April 21st.
Podcast to be broadcast: May 1st.

32148
good we got some interest here.

ps. i think its a wonderful idea to talk about coding snacks - we shouls make that a regular part of the podcasts.
