Living Room / digg rigging?
« Last post by mouser on April 20, 2006, 12:19 PM »
interesting article about digg.com accusation of rigged votes.

Digg Corrupted: Editor's Playground, not User-Driven Website
As a follow up to an earlier post (Digg Army: Right in Line), there have been some vibrations that I think not only our readers would find interesting, but also all Digg users.
To quickly summarize the earlier post, I had noticed two submissions by SpitF1re were on the front page, separated by only one story in between.
To digress for a second, we all know that people who Digg a lot have friends who use Digg. So often times friends digg articles for each other, and often times you may see the same people digging stories, and what not. The buddy-buddy system in effect. That's fine (in a way) - it's a shortcoming of all social networks - the more popular people gain more influence...

Living Room / Re: wanted: thoughts and ideas about blogs - bloggers join in!
« Last post by mouser on April 20, 2006, 12:15 PM »
great questions.

i don't have much experience with the free hosting sites so i won't comment on them.  i know vrgirl uses blogger.com a lot and knows some others, perhaps she can comment on them.

i have used moveabletype for a while and was happy with how well it supported multiple independent blogs with one system, but it's not open source and i've gradually turned from it to thinking Wordpress is the way to go.

each software has their own importing and exporting, some easier than others.  I think zaine recently moved from blogger.com to wordpress (or some other free hosting to wordpress) and it was pretty painless.

look forward to hearing more comments.

ps.
we'd be happy to set up some blogging accounts at donationcoder.com for members if that's something people want.

making money from web page ads, nice blog article from someone who knows

It's been almost a year and a half since I started making enough money with .. to allow myself to work on it full time. In that time, the question I'm most often asked is "how can I do it too?" So I guess it's time to talk a little bit about how to take that website of yours and bring more in than you are putting out. First of all, let's not delude ourselves. Making money on the Internet is hard -- its just as hard, if not harder, as it was back when people were happily deluding themselves into thinking that the Internet was the foundation of the American economy. It wasn't then, and it isn't now, but at least today that statement is a little bit closer to the truth.

don't forget you can launch any item by hitting alt+# key (or just digit key depending on your configuration).

Basic / Re: What flavors of basic?
« Last post by mouser on April 20, 2006, 08:57 AM »
i definitely believe that too many sections is bad, and can lead to less conversation..
in this case the programming school is a bit different since its really meant mainly just for people to get and submit assignments so its not a big deal to have a bunch of sections i think.

I'm not sure if we should have different sections for the various flavors of basic, like:

PHP / Before you start the PHP Assignments
« Last post by mouser on April 20, 2006, 07:37 AM »
To do these assignments you are really going to need access to a web account (with a database for the more advanced assignments).

Perhaps we can set up a test server for people to use if people need this, or someone can volunteer some space and databases.

Alternatively, you could install php and mysql on your local pc, but then you wouldn't be able to post a live link for us to test.

Official Announcements / New site feature - Ignore Boards
« Last post by mouser on April 19, 2006, 12:53 PM »
As part of the programming school additions (https://www.donation...index.php?board=77.0), we have added a new feature.

In your profile you should now see an "Ignore Boards" setting in left sidebar.

From that page you can designate that you aren't interested in certain sections of the forum.  By marking sections/boards to be ignored, you will completely eliminate these boards from showing up, being searched, shown on unread posts page, etc.  It will be completely ignored.

Free C++ Compiler/IDE for windows:
If you are using Microsoft Windows, and are new to C++, we recommend Dev-C++. Dev-C++ is a nice and friendly free (donationware!) c++ ide (which also installs a free c++ compiler by default):

If you already have another c++ compiler for windows that you are comfortable with (like Microsoft Visual Studio), or if you are working in *nix with the standard gcc compiler, that's fine, but you must be familiar with how to use it before starting the assignments.

carol is exactly right.
people need to stop worrying about getting junk mail.
everyone should have an email address they use for nothing but signing up for stuff.
then you will not care about receiving junk mail or spam.
stop worrying about getting spam, just use an email designed for it.

you are talking about the C++ Preprocessor (http://www.cplusplus...al/preprocessor.html).
the subject of much debate and misuse, which can be made to do some strange stuff.

by the way if you thought that was confusing, you might enjoy:
The International Obfuscated C Code Contest
http://www0.us.ioccc.org/main.html

Official Goals of the Contest
  • To write the most Obscure/Obfuscated C program under the rules below.
  • To show the importance of programming style, in an ironic way.
  • To stress C compilers with unusual code.
  • To illustrate some of the subtleties of the C language.
  • To provide a safe forum for poor C code. :-)

ps. the real goal of the contest is to see who can make c code that will break your brain with its insanity.
