But I still got a thing for RAID ... That will take a while to pryme away from. *Shrug* hehe

Maybe you should join a support group? :P

Aren't those just Redundant Arrays of Independent(ly damaged) People? That would make the best first step to not go.

For your information, that's independently 'deluded' - not 'damaged' Buster!  ;D

Aw Gee Wiz mom... Do I really have to be Politically Correct while I'm talking shit? That'll just make me sound like... ... ...Them.

You can do some of that with software RAID in Windows. But that's for a declared drive array rather than a flexible pool.

Yeah, the basic spanning, striping, & soft RAID stuff came out with the original Dynamic Disk on Win2k. The extended redundancy stuff only showed up on and currently exists for WHS. Sure partitioning is more On-the-Fly flexible on 7/08 but redundancy? Not so much.

Oh and about the RAID 5-like parity quote ... You're just twisting the knife on me aren't you.  :D

Hmm...I think I'm going to go back to declaring myself a Rasta-Judeo-Presbyterian-Islamic-Taoist-Bhuddist-Wiccan. And maybe do a quick LLC filing for a new faith-based organization. Something like The First Congregation of the Divine Revelation and Celestial Harmony. (Which resonates at 40hz in the frequency spectrum - in case you hadn't already guessed. :P)

Um... Any chance of just whittling that down to just Wiccan something?? It's just that the Pagan, harmony with nature types have always struck me with being a much safer (on the bloodthirsty scale) option. Not saying the others are necessarily "bad" (history has already covered that...), I just have a few "comfort level" concerns. ;)

So...anybody interested in becoming a member of my new clergy? Reasonable rates! And, this month only, we're running a special on elevations to the rank of bishop. 50% off through January 31, 2012.

Well shit, i guess if you're having a sale...

I think the main goal is to make a point against the tightening of copyright and other internet-banning laws, and try using some of the exemptions of religion to make said point.
After all, claiming that something is against your religion gives you exemptions of some laws. And religions are harder to sue.

Oh sure, I understand the goal...and think the strategy is quite clever. I just find it rather troubling that "we" had to go there/that far just to ensure a bargaining position for something that should have been (according to now quickly becoming silly historical scribblings like the US constitution) a completely laughable non-issue.

The devil we knew, has been swapped for a lessor evil ... And that strikes me as being much like voting yes to castration as a birth control method. Sure it'll work just fine. ...But Damn!

True, there's always room for improvement ... And (i guess) a new storage medium that's less grenade prone is too much to ask for. :)
3206
I watched it.

Did it not hit the nail on the head?

Oh yeah. With a sledgehammer.

Showed it to my GF. She works for our state's social services department. She's directly involved with public medical, mental health, and elder-care programs. She said she's run into similar cases where somebody, through no fault of their own, was in danger of being allowed to "go down" for something totally beyond their best efforts to get corrected.

So far, she's always been able to get things straightened out for these people.

But she (being both sensible and kind-hearted) lives in dread of the day when some bit of bureaucratic idiocy or government red tape results in a case being sent to her - and ends with someone dying - because she was unable to help that person out.
 :(

My wife works for a doctor, and has had to go to bat for patients on many occasions because the insurance company/MediCare didn't want to shell-out for a necessary procedure.

Honestly, I think that the futuristic, techy angle only serves to soften the fact that the problem already very much exists today. If it isn't "Cost Effective" for you to live, due to perceived age, health, or "quality" concerns ... Accounting will decided if it's time for you to die.

The word religion makes me shudder.
Because of the potential for trouble.

I know there are many that do not cause trouble,
but there are many that do.

Centralizing power over aspects of the net could be another potential threat.
Even if it's in the name of keeping it free.

With individuals being named as spearheading this,
that alone gives them some power.

Maybe I don't know enough about the goals or ideas of this deal,
so it's just my opinion as an outsider of a sort.

+1 - The devil you know vs. the lessor of evils vs. world domination by who knows what. No matter how this ends...it won't be good.

Guess Ubuntu is safer than street-racing

:-\ ...Oh what the hell, I've made worse leaps of logic (hehe).

But in Windows defense, the array has been rock stable for 4 or 5 years of 24/7 running. And that includes surviving the Vista -> 7 upgrade ... So I got no complaints. It's just the usual Theory vs. Practice argument. In theory the Asus Commando's on-board RAID controller should be able to rebuild the array just fine. In practice. However... You don't get to find out if the theory is indeed correct ... Until - Something goes horribly wrong - It's too late. :)

Now, I wonder if I can start a sub-sect/cultish off-shoot/branch that believes in smoking pot, sharing information, and sharing photos of targets shot at long range with fully-automatic 50 caliber sniper rifles (yay for Barrett!) or mortars or bazookas or armor piercing tank rounds or white phosphorous rounds or...

Easy enough to do... Any chapter of Koptimists on this side of the Mason–Dixon Line, should automatically (pun intended) include the above requirements.

It lives. Rebuild was successful, so it's back to normal...or at least back to fixing the original screwed up.

I feel for you... And yet again, we see why we estimate the time it will take in minutes, and budget hours...  :-\

Some days I just hate computers...

Yeah, about half of them. I can't help but miss the good ol' days when most of my time was spent street racing ... I'm pretty sure that was better for my health than the ambient stress level I keep now.

O_o WTF? Maybe it's just a bit too early for me, but this is nutz. Granted that doesn't make it a bad thing... It's more of a measured response of equal force to the insanity that we all know as the RIAA/MPAA. It strikes me as watching a battle of whits play out at an asylum.

Now if they can just get it registered in the US...

Thanks guys, I thought perhaps a few folks could enjoy a chuckle at my expense.

@40hz - I already read that post before creating this one. It looks interesting, and promising ... But I still got a thing for RAID ... That will take a while to pry me away from. *Shrug* hehe

Rebuild is now at 31%, which is way slower than the commercial stuff I'm used to. Now I have no excuse to not go to the company Christmas party which they're having rather late for reasons that escape me.

Day = Gone to poo.

So I was planning on trying something new in the way of a development project. This required installing an updated SDK and a few other add-ons for MSVS2008 which I've been using since I got bit by the lack of DPIAware support in MSVS2005 a while back. Simple enough... Right? No.

First I decided to try winging the VS08 SDK7 integration, because I didn't notice the tool for that/was in a hurry/have gotten away with this sort of behavior in the past. This of course went badly... Very badly... *Sigh*

So I uninstall MSVS2005 Pro, MSVS2008 Pro, and MSVS 2010 Pro in their entirety ... To make sure I've no remnants of the muckings about I'd made of them earlier. This is close to 20GB of drive i/o because I also had all three copies of the MSDN Library installed (one for each). But that shouldn't be a problem... Right? Wrong.

The uninstall went fine, the reinstall however got as far as doing the service packs and updates for 2008, before one of the "Sanity Check" reboots I did started to take a bit longer than usual... During POST.

Click...

Click...

Click...

Shit.

2 outta 3 ain't bad :D Is not what I wanted to hear from the RAID controller. But I was rather expecting it after the POST's rather odd almost 3 minute preamble. However, at least with RAID 5, 2 outta 3 really isn't that bad ... Assuming I could get a replacement installed in a timely (NOW!!!) fashion.

I went to Staples, and they had nothing.

I went to Office Depot, and they had nothing.

I went to Radio Shack (hay it was there), and they had nothing.

At this point I'm weighing the odds in my head between ordering something...and 40hz's commentary in other threads about the tendency of drives to occasionally blow in sets. So...

I went to BestBuy (which I hate) and they had 1 320GB WD blue drive in the whole friggin store. I wanted black. But I was out of options...and at least it wasn't green. I hate the green ones - they're not ripe yet... - Prius' are green e.g. green means slow. God awful slow. There is nothing I hate more than slow.

I'm now waiting to see if/how well the RAID rebuild will go:

RAID5 Rebuild.jpg

Yes port 2 is the new arrival ... They used to all match.

I don't have an ending for this, so I'll just take a small bow. <-George Carlin)

That said, looking at my previous two NANY mugs (from '09 and '10) it seems that they don't make any mention of the fact that I was a participant or a winner or a completionist or anything like that. Perhaps this entire problem could be resolved if this year's mug followed the same trend.

+1 - I'm good with that. It is, what it is, 'cause it are ... No explanation is required. ;)

Back to the original post --- I firmly believe that software in medicine like that should be open source, GPL'd software.

So what happened to uncle Dave??

Well he was trying to jailbreak his pacemaker and bricked himself.

I still like Finalist best.

Doesn't finalist by definition imply a yet to be selected winner? It sounds unfinished.
3220
Anyway, trolling aside, it seems a bit weird to put fluoride in the water supply - wouldn't it be more appropriate to put it in toothpaste?

That assumes people will actually use it. Water is a bit more of a necessity (can't go more than 3 days without it they say). Hell they'll probably start putting Chantix in the water next to eliminate smokers.

Why not write "winner" on the NANY pictures? Since everyone who delivers a program is a winner, I guess it looks more cool than "participant" :P

[edit] not that I think about it, it kind of reminds me of that Charlie Sheen thing with "Winning". Maybe we should just leave it as it is, then ;) [/edit]

Hm... I get where you're going, and agree with the Charlie Sheen bit. So how about splitting the difference with Completion Award?

It doesn't have the tinny (just showed up) sound of participant, and also avoids the PC BS everybody is a "winner" lie.
3223
As far as I can discover, there is zero benefit to it. The *only* evidence where it is less toxic is in topical application, and even then, there's no evidence that it is beneficial.

IIRC they started putting fluoride in the water back when to (allegedly) help prevent tooth decay/cavities/etc. The local city water plant was included in this fiasco. However... We had our own well, so I just got plain ol' natural ground water throughout my youth. I've never had a cavity in my life...And most of my fluoride drinking peers have had most of their heads replaced.

So I'll vote yes to it being completely pointless also.

The .NET Removal Tool has served me well in the past. I usually strip everything with it then and start over (it hasn't failed me yet).
have you ever used it with Windows 7?  I've used it successfully with XP, but not vista or 7.

Yes.
