one of the longtime (but mostly quiet) members on the site, seedling, has submitted an entry to the BCB contest, and decided to join the DonationCoder.com site programmers.

His first program, Random Mix Tape Maker, is quite cool, and I hope you will all welcome him to the site!

Random Mix Tape Maker allows you to create custom playlists from multiple mp3 file sources on your system.

You can use these playlists to burn fresh, always new compiliations to a CD or drag & drop to your portable mp3 player, or just save a playlist for your listening pleasure. You have complete control as to how the playlists are created. Controlling such things as song length, compilation size, compilation length, and files/directories you want to exclude allows you to custom tailor playlist creation to fit your needs.

Making "mix tapes" is as old an idea as the tape recorder itself; Random Mix Tape Maker was made to create a compltely unique list of your favorite songs every time you use it, thus taking the hassle of searching through specific songs every time you want to make a mix of your own. Use it to make fresh mixes for your own listening pleasure, or use it to turn your friends on to your genre of music.

  • Limit created playlist by total song duration (good for burning audio cds)
  • Limit created playlist by filesize (good for burning mp3 cds/dvds)
  • Limit minimum and maximum durations of songs to incldue
  • Recursively searches directories; easy to search one or many.
  • Flexible blacklist let's you easily skip songs or directories you don't want to include.
  • Full drag+drop support into the program and from the program out to other apps.
  • It's fast - just keep hitting the randomize button till you get a playlist you like.
  • Can randomize existing playlists instead of directories if you prefer.
  • Output displays mp3 tag info or file paths.
  • Creates playlist files or plain text output.
  • Double click to preview a song from the constructed playlist.

glad to have you aboard seedling!

welcome to the site redcat71!

im looking forward to seeing if anyone knows any,
but one of the ideas for farr v2 is to add this functionality to farr, which is a nice idea.
the general idea is that you might be able to perform operations on running apps, including "switchto" and "kill"

We need some help with the podcast audio show!

  • one of the things we want to do as a regular feature on our podcast is have short interviews with freeware/donationware authors. so we need to find one or more people who are willing to conduct these interviews, either over the phone or computer voice conversation tool like skype.
  • we also need a general audio producer - someone to actually produce the show, edit together the different segments, and make a real show out of all the submissions.  anyone want to try to take on this supervisor job and be responsible for making the podcast show a reality?

maybe we could get a theme for the general show not just your segment?

anyone else want to try to come up with some musical themes we can use instead of fighting with copyright stuff?

Living Room / Typo Confounds Kryptos Sleuths
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2006, 06:08 AM »
For more than a decade, amateur and professional cryptographers have been trying to decipher an encrypted sculpture that sits on the grounds of the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Three-fourths of the sculpture has already been solved.
But now Jim Sanborn, the artist who created the Kryptos sculpture, says he made a mistake. A previously solved part of the puzzle that sleuths assumed was correct for years isn't. The new information, including what the mistaken text really says, is creating a buzz among enthusiasts who've been obsessed over the sculpture for years.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Configuration Options
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2006, 04:58 AM »
reply sent via email but here is what i said for others who might be interested:

Custom browser and file explorer are used as follows:
there are occasions when the program launches your internet browser
(like if you launch a url), or opens your file explorer (if you ask to
browse the directory where a file lives).  normally it will use your
system-registered default internet browser or default file explorer
(windows explorer).  but some people like to use a special browser or
explorer for use with farr - so this let's you override system
default.  not useful for 99% of people and safe to ignore.

as for .cpl and .msc: right now farr will find any files by filename,
BUT it won't your control panel items if that is what you are asking -
this is something quite a few people have asked for and it's on the
todo list for v2 which is coming soon.  so it will be in an upcoming
version there is no doubt about it.

Mouser's Zone / Re: Suggestion: Stop Hiding those Licence Keys!

Perhaps you could consider a Sticky "Newbies Navigation Guide".

this is very much needed.

two pages are meant to serve this kind of role:
first this one: https://www.donation...com/About/start.html
and fromt here at bottom right you can get to: https://www.donationcoder.com/Help/

but then it's easy to get lost.. it's so dern hard to figure out how to present so much info in a reasonable way..

allen and hamradio are right -

once you are signed into the forum, visiting that page https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php should let you select your license key.

you must be logged into the forum though, before you can download your license key, so if it's asking you to log in it means it's not detecting that you are already signed into the forum.

it's a bit confusing i know, we're going to try to simplify it.

feel free to contact me by email if you continue to have trouble: [email protected]

and thanks for being in such good spirits about the frustration - not everyone is :)

as for accepting donations - we accept *anything* as a donation; youll find lots of different services to use to donate here:
https://www.donation...te/DonateMethod.html
or you can send anything via postal mail (drawings, chocolate, dimaonds, postcards, etc.) to:
https://www.donation...m/About/contact.html

just let us know when something is in the mail and we will upgrade your account

momonan you are not quite right about license being sent when you sign up; a license is only emailed when people donate. non-donators must visit that page to get a license after they sign up.

may i make an advice about backups to dvd:
date and save the old ones.
one day you're going to realize that 4 backups ago you deleted a file you need, and that you've been making backups without it.  being able to roll back to an older backup can be worth its weight in gold.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Search MP3
« Last post by mouser on April 20, 2006, 02:22 PM »
this is one of the major features people have been waiting for in v2 of farr,
to allow you to specify search modifiers, so that for a particular search you can weight things differently.

im afraid that right now the best you can do is go to search patterns and give *.mp3 a high score.

but you cant currently reduce a particular search to come up with only mp3s.

this is coming soon.
