that is the first time i've heard of such a problem.. if you tell us a little bit more about the error and your system perhaps we can get it working for you?

you can also email me directly ([email protected]).

having said that, i have to agree with the sentiment: "it caused a program error...NO donations for you!"  that does seem quite logical.

Developer's Corner / ProgrammableWeb.com - website apis and scripting
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2006, 02:27 AM »
Cavalcader found this great site which collects info about web apis and other stuff related to scripting websites and combining info from various websites.  Quite cool.

ProgrammableWeb is where you can keep-up with the latest mashups, what's new and interesting with Web 2.0 APIs, and the Web as Platform in general.
The core of the site is the blog and the 3 dashboards: Home, Mashups and APIs. All dashboards are updated daily.
I started this site because I couldn't find what I was looking for: a technology focused starting point for web platform development. (For a bit more see my initial post.) Although no guarantees, the last time I started a reference site it somehow became one of Google's highest rated links on the topic. Given that this site will be a collaborative effort with community input as well, this can be what we make it.

From codeproject.com one of the best sites for (windows) programmers.

The Standalone Programmer: Tips from the trenches
By Matt Gullett
...
I have been the only programmer at my employer for about 3 years now.  I am fortunate that my boss is an ex-programmer and has a good eye for architectural details and big pictures.  However, all of the architecture, design, development, debugging, testing and refining work falls to me.  I do not have a staff to assist with the development, QA or testing so for just about every aspect of development my company needs, I'm on my own.  Many of the projects I have worked on have been very small and accomplished in just a couple of weeks, but others have spanned 3 years and are continuing.
To combat this problem I have been endeavoring to train myself on the best practices and solutions to my problem.  Many of the concepts outlined in the various books can be easily applied to one-man-shows, but others cannot.  As a result I have searched for alternate solutions to the various problems I have encountered.  Most if not all of the solutions I have come up with are not original and many of you will already know what I know and much more.  I decided to write this article in the hopes that it would help some other developers AND that I could obtain feedback from the CP audience on best practices and techniques for success.

« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2006, 06:30 PM »
100+ mp3 episodes - fun!

Welcome to the wide world of T.W.A.T.
What is it?
T.W.A.T. is a hardcore tech daily internet radio show that has multiple hosts, guest, and topics. There are 1000's of internet radio shows that talk about what the hosts had for breakfast. This one is going to be HARDCORE TECH. The mortals wont understand it, but then again, it isn't for them, its for us. The shows only have to be five minutes long, but the hosts are welcome and encouraged to go over that limit.

there are a lot of programs that do this kind of thing (upload page with your current ip).
you might see if one of the others has a no-tray option.. i'll bet you can find one.

so basically you are saying that your current program works well you just want it hidden is that right?

yep, that is the official donationcoder.com launch date..
not sure if there is any point to having a "days online" box on the main page - just wanted something to put in that space.  any better suggestions are welcome.

that's a really interesting find cloq.

a lot of companies will do this, offer a free copy for translating a help file into another language or doing something similar, but this is the first time i've ever seen a website devoted to listing such offers!

Living Room / how to write a novel in 100 days - and 100 days of advice
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2006, 04:20 AM »
I believe that if you can write a simple English sentence (after all, that’s what Ernest Hemingway wrote), are alert to the world around you, and want to write a salable novel — really want to, not just kind of want to — then you can do it. I don’t think anybody ever became a writer by going to a workshop, reading a book, or even reading this article. Writing comes from something internal in a writer. However, this article will save you time, point you in the right direction, and help you write a novel in 100 days or less.

a book like "Code Complete" would be a good place to start: http://www.amazon.co...p/product/0735619670

there are also some good sites with programming style guidelines.. let's see what others come up with.

my personal belief about programming language learning is:

if you mainly want to learn the general skills of programming, just pick something that motivates you - it almost doesn't matter what language it is.  a good programmer can pick up a new language easily.

however, teaching yourself good habits is important, so find yourself a book that will help guide you.

i am a huge fan of object oriented programming, so i would strongly recommend an oop-centric language, like c++, java, c#, etc.  scripting languages are good for getting the job done but they miss out on the important role of oop in shaping ideas (imho).  that said, many of the scripting languages have object oriented facilities, they just aren't used nearly as much so you won't get as much practice there.

again you have to ask what you want in the end.  if the end result is to get a job, you need other concerns.  if the end result is to write cross-platform tools for mac, linux, windows, then you have other issues to work out.
