It probably needs to have options to change in sync with wallpaper changers - e.g., the Windows 7 Personalise/Desktop background changer:

Unfortunately, supporting all the different modes is harder than it seems (plus, I don't run Windows 7).

v1.0.1 - 2011-07-03
    + Official website release
+ Multi-monitor support.  One caveat, though.  Your monitors must be the
same resolution for this to work properly.
+ Tray menu to change the transparency level.  This value is saved between
      sessions.
+ Custom application icon courtesy of frankell.  (Thanks, frankell)

Thanks for the feedback.  However, I can't take credit for the effect since I just recreated what the Desk Projection app was doing.  Well, at least I think I did since I can't see what his code is actually doing.

As for using it, I agree with you.  I, personally, won't use it but it is a neat effect.  The next version will have multi-monitor support and a tray menu to adjust the transparency.

You could probably make use of my Snap DB application:  http://skwire.dcmembers.com/wb/pages/software/snap-db.php

I think I'll go with the second one.  Do you have a website of yours that you'd like me to reference in the credits?

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.  If you want, you can send me the icon and I'll recompile the app with it.

Give this a try:  Lucidity

  • Extract the zip to a folder of your choice.
  • Drag and drop any image (jpg/png/gif/tif/bmp) onto the Lucidity.exe file.

It should then set that image as your wallpaper (stretched) and create an effect similar (same?) to the Desk Projection application you mentioned above.  In fact, I think my version uses less CPU and is less laggy as a result.  You can adjust the transparency percentage by editing the included config.ini file in any text editor.  Let me know if it works for you.  Thanks.

Thanks, I just made a donation

Thanks a lot.   :D

Also, just to know: how does this software works exactly ? It doesn't change real screen brightness right ?

All it does is create a black GUI window the size of your entire desktop.  The GUI is set to always on top, disabled, and click-through.  Then, it makes that black GUI transparent to the level you choose.  This is what creates the "dimming" effect.  You're actually clicking through a transparent window.  Make sense?

Is there any risk of screen calibration modification ? Or damage ?

It doesn't change or mess with your monitor calibration at all.

I prefered the % settings accessible like the other version though

I was afraid of that.  Here's a version with just the multimonitor change:

Make sure you delete your DimScreen.ini before running this...

I downloaded that app and it's entirely controllable from the commandline.  You can simply create a batch file with something like the following in it:

c:\path\to\DProj.exe C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Applications data\Microsoft\wallpaper.bmp t20

Or, if the app is already running, and you change your wallpaper, you can simply use the "r" switch to reload the image:

c:\path\to\DProj.exe r

Of course, if I've misunderstood your original post, please let us know.   :D

Just out of sheer curiosity, what is the reason behind this?  Also, by non-modifier, you mean any key other than control, shift, alt or the Windows key, right?

Here's a mod of Ghoster that should work with multiple monitors.

I can make Ghoster work with multiple monitors but the problem is that it chews up CPU bigtime with a transparent window that large.

Ath's comment made me think of something.  There are two types of transparency in this case:

  • Per-pixel alpha transparency which is, as Ath mentioned, part of the image itself.  This is what I thought you meant when you said you wanted Frameless to support transparency.
  • Windows' "window" transparency where you set an opacity percentage and it makes the whole window transparent.  I think this is what you meant, right?

The only problem I have is working out how to set it?

No need to set anything; it should just work as before.  If it's not working for you, send me the image file, please.   :)

Somehow I thought that handling pictures was a lot more complicated than that, because of various formats and types ...etc. you make it look easy though!

It's really just about letting whichever language you use do the work for you.  Basically, Frameless does this:

So why do all they image viewers cost a bunch and stuff?

IrfanView is free.  XNView is free.  FastStone Image Viewer is free.  IMO, those are three of the most feature-complete image viewers out there.
