General Software Discussion / Re: I want to ALT-TAB between ALL apps

Well there you go, then! A possible free solution  Let us know how you get on with it, Lashiec. I've tried in the (distant) past and couldn't see it doing much for me. However, I'd be interested in how it works for you as this does seem a useful function.

Buying a Mac to get this funcitonality certainly would be an expensive solution! Running a shell replacement seems a bit drastic too - I can't believe that there are no 3rd party solutions?

sloppy editing - it was a "second chance" discout

Doh! No one is immune... Anyway, Marc's post above seems to confirm sloppy editing as the cause, my inference was just wrong...

I thought perhaps the difference reflected sloppy editing - it was a "second chance" discout offer so perhaps the original discount was 50% but late comers can still get it at a 13% discount?

@superboyac and Armando:

The following 2 issues are now fixed
1- CPU utilisation is now 0 when idle
2- Pivot table/chart are now based on the grid displayed items
3- Item grouping improvements

Emphasis mine Does that mean that the third issue (Item grouping improvements) remains "unfixed"  :P

It saddens me to note that at some point I managed to lose ALL of my e-mail correspondence from 1994 to 2001 and that big gaps have appeared in the period prior to 2005/6  :( Today I archive everything (excluding spam, "offers", and old notifications to let me know that my book order has shipped - once I receive the book I delete the e-mail) and back it up obsessively. I index it, as noted above, with LookOut.

I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun - with both mouse and pen - and recommend that if you're at all tempted you pick one of these up to test the waters. I have to confess that I have yet to really use the pen - and I've owned the thing for about two months - but the build quality, price and feature set are hard to beat. I have the little one (4x6 or so...) and have TRIED using the pen as my exclusive pointing device and I can see that if I gave it enough time it would become second nature, as mikiem notes.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Darwin on February 05, 2008, 05:55 PM »
Now, I’m not saying OA’s perfect. I’ve had enough problems with firewalls to know that some can appear after a month of daily use! Darwin obviously had problems with it, and I did have some small issues (with StrokeIt — but that’s easily fixed). But, as far as I’m concerned, it’s the best firewall I’ve tried so far… If they can fix some of the CPU “peaks” with uTorrent (and maybe others… like in Darwin’s case, I don’t know), it would be almost perfect for my needs. (I'm talking about the free version here -- the paid version might be even better... who knows.)

Armando is right - if the few wrinkles could be ironed out I'd happily run OA FW. I feel pretty comfortable with my current setup - Windows Firewall and my router firewall. However, I'd be perfectly happy running a more robust software firewall if I could find one that didn't make such a dent in my resources. I don't mind popups and distractions - a good firewall learns from your responses and pretty quickly just leaves you alone. I can't stand my CPU being tied up though... The perils of single core! Actually, I suppose I should be a good netizen/software freak and submit a bug report to the developers. Right, off to do that now...

EDIT: just cleaning up.... darn tenses!

And Google jumps into the fray (sort of...):

In a bid to preserve its dominance on the Web, Google Inc. is seeking to derail Microsoft Corp.'s plan to gobble up Yahoo Inc.

Since learning of Microsoft's $44.6-billion US unsolicited bid on Friday, Google has gone on the offensive, saying the merger would threaten Web innovation and competition.

At the same time, behind the scenes, the Internet giant is said to reaching out to rivals who may be interested in putting together a competing bid for Yahoo.

+1 for Lookout. I've tried just about every desktop indexer there is and the only reliable, fast, way to search Outlook I have found is Lookout. M$ bought them out a few years ago and developed Windows Desktop Search from it. At some point in the past 2 years they stopped hosting the installer for it - all "official" links to it now point to the homepage for WDS.

Thanks for the link, MikeMcLoughlin - I have an installer I archived years ago, but it's nice to know that it's still floating around if I need it

It's pretty fair as far as I can see. I like to sell to "people", and not to machines. People generally have the money. ;)

Good point, Ryan  ;D

Not much to add other than I completely agree with the previous posters in this thread.

General Software Discussion / Re: Mini-HowTo: Handling Cookie Privacy the Right Way
« Last post by Darwin on February 04, 2008, 11:58 PM »
Also, I want mouser's CPU and amount of installed RAM.

Ooh... yes! Me too

Re: cookies. I used to be obsessive about cleaning cookies out and have used at various times Buttuglysoftware's CacheClean (abandoned now, sadly, I believe), BillP Studio's WinPatrol Pro, Ashampoo WinOptimizer, and Webroot's Window Washer to manage them. Typically, the freebie (CacheClean - which is similar to CCleaner) was as good, and in some cases superior, to the shareware alternatives... I don't worry about cookies anymore beyond spyware and adware and simply have real-time sw/aw monitoring enabled and that's it. Every once in a blue moon I'll run one of the above solutions, but those days are getting fewer, and farther between. If you are worried about cookies in general, take mouser's advice and use CCleaner or CacheClean if its still available (it too is an excellent all purpose general cleaner, though it lacks CCleaner's Registry Cleaning function).

Newsletter for February 4th, 2008
Codename "The Winners' Circle"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Darwin here welcoming you to the February 4th edition of the newsletter. We're highlighting threads from the past six weeks and anticipate this being a slightly longer than usual newsletter. It's been an exciting period since the last full newsletter with a huge software draw. Congratulations to all of January's Software Draw winners.

There was a lot of press about our NANY 2008 programm challenge, including a Nice little write-up of DonationCoder in usa today "tech_space" blog and other press comments about the NANY 2008 challenge in InformationWeek, Lifehacker.com, and more.  Find and Run Robor (FARR) was also mentioned in several prominent places recently, including a nice mention in lifehacker.

2. Software Releases by DonationCoder.com Members

Some fun new releases by members on our site in the recent weeks, including a bunch of FARR plugins, and a really fun and challenging puzzle game called Deductoid by member timns.

3. February Discounts and Giveaways

This month we are focusing on the products of Metaproducts.com, who make a variety of truly excellent programs. Mouser says that several of their programs are at the top of their respective classes, and he recommends Offline Explorer, Mass Downloader, and Startup Organizer, among others.  We have 33% discounts on all of their programs, plus we're giving away one of each on February 14th.

We had a TON of discounts in January and some of them are still active for another few days; and due to late posting in January, the following discounts are running through February: xplorer^2, SyncBackSE, and PerfectDisk Pro.  So check out the Specials Page before these offers expire.

All of these applications are available in February's draw, so if you haven't won anything recently visit the specials page and enter to win!

4. Your input requested

A warm welcome to all the members that have joined over the last six weeks. In the fall of 2007 we reached a milestone 100,000 members. We've added almost 10,000 more since that time! We're looking forward to interacting with as many of you as possible on the forum. If you haven't already introduced yourself, please post a brief note on the OK - lets get to know each other... who are you, what do you do, where from? board. You'll find Donationcoder to be a welcoming community. Also visit the following threads, we'd love to see your participation in them:

5. Mini-Reviews by Members

Mini-reviews are a great resource for people researching software solutions and may be found on a dedicated Mini-Review Board. A bunch of new mini-reviews have been posted recently. Please remember to acknowledge the efforts of the reviewers with a few donationcredits if you find their reviews interesting and/or helpful.

6. Living Room

J-Mac wrote an interesting post about the modern office and the problems associated with our power and port hungry peripherals - Power and Ports - The Ever Diminishing Resources in My Office! He received a number of responses and suggestions. How do YOU deal with this increasingly irritating issue?

7. Fun and Leisure

Ever bang your head against a wall trying to remember the name of your favourite TSR-80 game? Relief is in sight. Find names for old games...

8. General Software Discussion

Once again the General Software Discussion board has seen an enormous amount of activity over the past six weeks.

9. Specific Software Discussions

Postings made to the General Software Discussion board often relate to specific applications. Here are some highlights.

10. Software Advice and Solutions Requested

The General Software board receives a LOT of posts, everything from pointers to web content discussing the software industry to people posting with their experiences with particular software applications, good and bad. Often people post asking for opinions about specific software or categories of software. A recent thread saw mouser asking What's the best program for cooking and recipe management? Two other threads request advice on Dealing with spam and Spam filtering.

11. Coding Snacks

If you're looking for a software solution and can't find anything that quite fits your requirements, why not post a coding snack request? Donationcoder has lots of expert and willing coders who might just find your request interesting enough to take on. Frequently, someone will post a link to an existing solution to your request. For an example check out the discussion surrounding FreewareFan's IDEA: Program to print 4 small text files as one page, 4-up.

Read on for some more examples of recent requests, the solutions suggested, and the coding snacks completed:

12. Developer's Corner

The Developer's Corner section of the forum is not *just* for developers! For example, mahesh2k compares three of (the four) mainstream webbrowsers and asks if developers should Bow to the browser? The thread becomes an interesting discussion of web browsers in general. Well worth a read by anyone who is "on-line".

13. Member Site Spotlight

I'm pleased to highlight sri's new webpage in this newsletter. He offers "tutorials for web masters on how to install PHP scripts and also link to/aggregate useful how-tos on all topics like Technology, Health, Lifestyle, Cooking from other web sites around the internet." A little something for everyone and all presented with a clean, economical front-end that makes browsing and reading a pleasure. Visit Sri at Sri's How To Tuts.

14. Thank you

That's it for the February 4th edition of the newsletter. Thank you to the entire Donationcoder community for your participation and a BIG "thank you" to both mouser and jgpaiva, who provided much needed proofreading and LOTS of advice about the content of this newsletter.

I was about to start grabbing screenshots for you when I noticed that you've installed the beta

Well... $2000 includes a couple of extensions, but ArcGIS 9.1 would have cost me in the neighbourhood of that had I had to pay full price (thank goodness for academic licencing, which brought the cost down to about $730)... I'd have to buy 9.2 to have a Vista compatible version as well!

1) that the systray icon doesn't pop up any menu when the icons are "hidden" inside PS Tray Factory. Online Armor Free is the only program I have with this weakness.

Actually, X1’s icon does the same. So my wild guess is that there are a bunch of other tray icons that might not behave properly in ps tray factory — not only OA or X1. Isn’t giving a firewall a  because it’s not perfectly compatible with PS tray a bit… extreme (Curt : do you have Irish blood?  :P) ??

Yeah, I've a number of icons that I can't hide using PSTrayFactory and still access context menu functionality for - Broadcom's Bluetooth controller app is one of them. Can't recall the others as I got fed up and simply stopped having them run in tray!

Anyway, just a little housecleaning would be good.  I wonder how the new interface will be.

Hi Superboyac - just noticed this comment. Check out my screenshot of the beta for version 4 in my earlier post in this thread.
