I'm only as sharp as a marble, Iain. What does that pic mean? : (

Very good points made in this post: 30 Years Of The CD, Of Digital Piracy, And Of Music Industry Cluelessness
Here's an extract - read the rest at the link.
The CD therefore stands as a wonderful symbol of the music industry's inability to see the deeper, underlying trends in technology, and where they would take us. Back then, it meant that nobody was worried about the idea that people would copy digital files from CDs and share them, because they forgot that technology would make possible tomorrow the things that seemed impossible today. Now it means the copyright industries are still trying to preserve unsustainable 20th century business models instead of planning for the incredible technologies we will have in 10, 20 or even 30 years time. They only have to look at the history of the CD and digital piracy to see just how far things can go -- and how wrong our current assumptions can be.

In a way it's not "forgetting", it's like hiring an incompetent prophet who misread the future. We've known from day 1 it's possible to copy CD's. I'd peg it to more of a "Revenge of the Nerds" effect where the jocks in the industries figured computers were those things only nerds used, and so they could be kept marginalized and out of sight where they weren't really a problem. It's like having Asimov's Hari Seldon do a beautiful future history of music for the next 100 years. Then Hari Seldon missed a certain Mule-like character named Shawn Fanning and that beautiful history went to pieces. Oops.

My favorite example is that the most successful SF series of all time, Star Trek, spent *35 years* (I'm ending with Star Trek Voyager) copying everything in sight with something called a "Replicator". I think there were less than one hand's worth of fingers of stories that specifically dealt with cultures getting upset at unauthorized copying. Nah, we were too busy laughing at the Ferengi for being materialistic, remember?

Elsewhere there's the complicated topic of amateur Subtitles, which are apparently copyright violations. Now Netflix has "acquired" the Finnish amateur ones wholesale. Paraphrasing Renegade, I can't even explain the complicated mess because doing so will send me into fits and I have chores to do. Plus I don't speak Finnish.  :-\

Here comes the internet watchdog system:

http://www.cnn.com/2...rt-system/index.html

"(CNN) -- It is about to get a bit more difficult to illegally download TV shows, movies or music online.

A new alert system, rolling out over the next two months, will repeatedly warn and possibly punish people violating digital copyrights. The Copyright Alert System was announced last July and has been four years in the making.

If you use AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, or Verizon as your Internet service provider, you could receive the first of one of these notes starting in the next two months."

I will be watching out for if this extends to the locker services.

Then "had to reboot" obviously didn't apply. The thing works. That's the end of it afaic.

I think I disagree. I just did it to turn off Caps Lock, and I had to reboot (Win XP). But it's all good.

If you had to reboot then it probably hooks the make and break codes. Maybe installed a virtual device driver or something. Down at that low level it should be able to disable. :)

I think it has an uninstall too, but that's fine. I only need to disable about 2-3 keys, and when I get around to it I'll prob do Caps Lock as well, but the rest are fine.

In the middle of my inventory, I discovered Alan Dean Foster's Codgerspace, about how a melted cheese sandwich proceeds to cause a factory to produce sentient machines. Hysterically silly fun : )

Tao, FWIW,
recommendation for remap software via mouser:

Fannon -- thanks for the tip about using SharpKeys to reassign Capslock; i've added a tip about that in the FARR help file for people who want to use CapsLock -- it seems like a good choice especially for laptop users.

was looking at it lately - looks like it will change Ctrl key

I think it does work - I just set it to disable control-right and it apparently does. It lets the original key through so for example I gave it Control-W (the worst of the batch, it kills whole windows) and out comes a small-w, but that's fine. (Because with my new widget which I am affectionately calling Turbo Backspace) I can just retype it.

Then I just mashed a bunch of other control keys. Glorious amounts of nothing occurred.

The only problem is that it seems to need to reboot which takes 5 minutes on my machine for MS Sec. Essentials to quit hogging the CPU and settle back into its corner. But otherwise all is well!

(Proceeds to break Mach 1 with the number of errors he can correct now. I'm a pest, but I give praise where it's due!)

I tried to intercept it and just return. Didn't work. But if you can point out a page on the forum where someone successfully nullifies a modifier only hotkey I'll look at it. I searched 1/2 hour with no luck.
The proper way to disable a key is with a keyboard remap utility. Or pry the key off and stick a cap over it.

Very well Sir Miles, I shall put my Resident Pest hat away for today and continue making and erasing mistakes as fast as I can!  :D

Glad you like it. I don't believe there's any way to disable just a modifier key using ahk. But this site shows how to use a keyboard mapper software to disable a single key:

http://blog.enrii.co...ey-in-your-keyboard/

(I believe) you could always just change it to shift with AHK -
wouldnt matter if you miss then :)

<--- waits with baited breath to hear the erudite Miles' opinion of this idea...  :)

I dunno Iain, just go content by content. The only 4th hand gripe I have of Khan Academy is it's a little disconnected, the items are shorter than reg college lectures, so it might take some work to organize them into an instructional pattern.

Copyright Complaint Kills the Rickroll [UPDATED]
...Editor’s note: The Rickroll video was blocked from YouTube for 24 hours, but now it’s back. We’re contacting YouTube for an explanation.

“Taking down a five-year-old video with tens of millions of views is strange enough, but it is far from clear why AVG Technologies—the people behind AVG Anti-Virus—would want to do so at all,” enigmax wrote.

Okay's see if this does the trick! Yes I do think it might!

(Shades of Mortal Kombat)
Miles Wins! App-ality!  \

The one other little feature that would be awesome if it's possible is to just totally disable the right side Control key. All it ever does to me is become a key that does irritating things when I reach for Right Shift and miss. The worst is Control W that nukes forum and chat windows I'm in, to silly things like Bookmarks, Quick Find, and a few even stranger ones.

Otherwise, this is almost good enough as is.

Edit: Actually it's one of the best little mini-app (snack?) ideas I've had, because 75% of my typos are between 4-7ish characters long, so the only trick now is to train my muscle memory better. Right now I'm overshooting by a couple of keys but I've already used the Snack some 10 times in the past hour. Hooray!

Hmm. I'm getting Can't Load Icon and it doesn't seem to do anything. Any ideas?

P.S. What's an Editor Group app?

A big usage is Firefox typing in forums.

Naw Backspace them out, with my typing style I get junk like Milews Aheawd is Mty Frioend. (exaggerating a little.)
So just blasting out 4 and 7 characters at a time is good.

P.s. Is your avatar a pic of you or Miles Davis?

What about Control-Tilde and Alt-Tilde?
(That key in the top left above tab)

It might be clever to put two versions of it in, make Control-Tilde -4 Characters and Alt-Tilde -7 characters.

Miles how do you feel about adding a couple of features? One possibility would be "delete the last X keystrokes". Even while typing this post I don't ever get transposed characters, I get more "garbage", and then a couple normal characters pile on top of it, so roughly "last 7" is the number I'd need.

Due to my upcoming move, I might soon have a few major updates here. I am going to attempt to inventory my sizable book collection as the prelim stage to paring it down. Basically only fatigue and my usual problems focusing stand in my way ... Ooh look, a new DC post!  :P

Edit: Miles' new widget over in the Transpose thread is proving to be insanely useful as I am trying to type some 400 authors and titles and all my typos are like 4-7 characters deep. : )

People are just too damned nosy and have to insert themselves into everybody Else's business, no matter how big or small.  And if that isn't enough, then they have to go a step further and ridicule anyone that's "different" to the point of either trying to change them or ruin their lives.  They can't just live and let live.
People like that are either so unhappy with their own lives and try to make everyone Else's life miserable (misery loves company) or they think they are above reproach and need to command everyone to their line of thought.  You know, full of themselves.

I feel the push to "real names" is on a collision course here, because of the ability for "outrage" to go viral. At least in old small towns if you made a wreck of your life in Maine people in Pennsylvania wouldn't usually know. Now it's that "Google Monkey" effect I mentioned: "Oh, that's you that did _____?"

Sure, and I'd even seen some of that before. I didn't intend to say that Apple precisely borrowed Linux code, hence the *nix I was using. However, at the broader level, I did mean that when their own core code went to pieces, they went outside indeed and it was much easier to borrow the Mach kernel than rewrite a brand new one all over again.

So my comment was about how they borrowed some open source core code and turned it into one of the most locked down platforms in history.

Since Microsoft started its move towards more cloud-based initiatives (i.e. Office365 and Microsoft Online Services) I'm having trouble seeing where there's a future for a company like mine - unless we either want to become software developers, or spend our time selling Microsoft's online subscriptions from door to door.

I'm hearing shades of 1985 on this.
"Save the Microsoft Tower! 10 years ago it was hit by competition and it hasn't been the same since!"
"Great Scott!"
"Doc! What is it Doc?"

@Tao - Huh? I must be denser than usual this morning. You just lost me with that one... ;D

It was the part about selling Microsoft "person to person". I was reminded of the ongoing joke that people were soliciting funds to save the Clock Tower in Back to the Future. (Remember, it was struck by lightning in 1955 which was how Marty got home the first time, the only way they could get 1.21 Gigawatts of power to fuel the Flux Capacitor.)

"Save Microsoft! A once evil company is now led by Steve Ballmer. Save Microsoft! Won't you buy a subscription to Office?"

Bonus: Selling Girl Scout cookies to go on fields trips is so low tech. I'd love to see a YouTube video of a smart girl scout selling "cloud initiative solutions to raise money for our educational enrichment activities".
