It's funny you mention Canon's easyprint software, if for no other reason because HP's software is so incredibly complex and bad. For a while, HP used Kodak's easyshare, which was god-awful. I've yet to do the color printing thing. I bought an HP LaserJet 4 in February 1993 and it still works as good as the day I took it out of the box. So until it starts smoking, I won't give it up.

But I do have a collection of photos I'd like to see in print, and maybe one of the latest Canon's could make these digitals come to life on paper.

The most serious problem is the abuse of the GNU General Public License, where corporations want to have it both ways — to get code for free, and then turn around and sell it for profit. You don't like it? "Sue us," says Corporate Amerika. "We have enough lawyers to fill cities if you come at us."

What if a company appropriated your work and ideas and sold them for a fortune and sued you if you protested and claimed your authorship of the code? I'd say light the torches and bring the hammers, boys, pain is coming.

Not at all, Scott, as it's interesting to know what others are running. I'm out of town for the first half of June, but will definitely add Ad Muncher to The Great Software List when I return. It even blocked ads in my RSS reader's browser.

You two would have been very frustrated in the DOS days of the 1980s, especially with WordPerfect 5.1. It had a detailed set of keyboard shortcuts, once mastered, allowed you to fly when working with that word processor. Back then, keyboards were sold with plastic templates that had those keyboard shortcuts for every function key — four deep for each — that served as a visual mnemonic device. (They also sold keyboard with a second set of 12 Function keys on the left side of the keyboard. I cried the day they stopped selling those workhorses.) It wasn't long before you had memorized most of the keys, thus giving you the advantage of speed over others. I work with a minimum of 23 different programs every single day no matter what, and having keyboard shortcuts to launch them is sweet! WK (WinKey)+CTRL+B launches BlogJet and WK+V launches Visual Thesaurus, for example.

I can accurately type 85wpm on the keyboard, and almost a 100wpm with 2-5 mistakes. For folks like me, the mouse is the slowest device on my system, and taking my hands off the keyboard throws everything into slow motion by comparison. Thus the need for a hot key app on my desktop.  :)

Found a link on Xtort.Net today to Hot Key Plus by Brian Apps in the UK. It's freeware and is the best keyboard shortcut app I've found yet. I wrote the author for three minor improvements and hope to hear back. I had been using WinKey, which is no longer developed by Copernic. Wow!

[UPDATE]: I now use AutoHotkey exclusively for all hotkey and keyboard shortcuts on my computer.

Thanks, I love them, and they really set the site apart from others — classy, elegant, and not overdone.

Check out PhotoFiltre, which will provide you with a tool you'll probably want to keep.

Just a corrective note. You mention: "Camtasia is unlike the other ScreenCasting tools in this review, because it produces pure movie files using video formats that are meant to be played back in a standard movie player like windows media player."

BB Flashback, too, exports to AVI and WMV (exe, PowerPoint, and Flash).

DCC has some of the best graphics I've seen. mouser, where do you find these really slick graphics/icons, or do you create them yourself?

I'd add a separate page for these individual developers, since some — like the two SysInternals guys — are heroes.

__Karen's Power Tools

Here are others, but not necessarily great:
__Moon Software
__Xtort.net
__Kurt Zimmermann

It is a natural evolution from what has been occurring so far, and it serves as a natural lure for donations, thus a great idea.

That's hilarious. I'll vote with the "keep making a great site" crowd. I think a gentle, professional "This site is made possible by your donations, thus the domain name" reminder is sufficient. The best reward, of course, is the smart, vibrant community created right here at DCC.

Although it's not a installation monitoring tool like Total Uninstall, MyUninstaller is very handy!

JP, have you ever met an app that was as customizable as EditPlus? Great program. Just wish it had more power!

mouser, you might love BB Flashback then. I really wanted to buy Macromedia when I spent time looking for these, but after a week of testing, found that it skipped on as many as half of the demos I recorded — and I have 4Gb of RAM on my system! With BB Flashback, one can import as well as capture any sound being played on one's system during recording. I even made a video of a music video just to see how far it would go! Best of all, though, you can record your movements, and then go back and record and edit your audio track until it's exactly how you want it. I could go on, but for the price, it's really, really good.

I've used it twice in support situations by linking to a html/flash file I uploaded, and got my problems fixed in no time when a tech could see exactly how their app was behaving in a given situation. I thought of putting a number of demo videos of some of the apps on my site instead of just screenshots, but it would eat up far too much bandwidth. One other useful application of this type of software is between languages. I worked with an Austrian author who spoke almost no English, but was able to point out several flaws in one menu's features and two dialogs that was clear from the video without translating 400 words or more for describing my actions.

Living Room / Re: Avoid bad software versions by reading their forums
« Last post by zridling on May 26, 2005, 05:07 AM »
That's an excellent point Scott, as I have been kicked off of numerous forums for posting a criticism of the software, or griping about an unfixed bug across several versions. Many forums' TOS state that you must email support with any gripes and must not use the forum to post anything negative (in more vague and vacuous terminology), or you CAN and WILL BE banned.

If you ask me, a company should produce a beta version of the software, throw up a forum for all suggestions and gripes, and then fashion the initial release around what the company knows customers want. But that doesn't happen with many apps!

And mouser, you're right. That's why one should distinguish between "unusually high user discontent" and just the normal forum noise of users demanding features. By the way, in the EssentialPIM forum today, someone actually recommended that they add a Checkbook feature to the program so that they wouldn't have to bother with Excel or Quicken anymore. Holy snickes!!

Living Room / Avoid bad software versions by reading their forums
« Last post by zridling on May 25, 2005, 02:35 AM »
A piece of advice I persistently give to users is to peruse a software company's forums before purchasing anything. There's a nasty trend going around where every other version is so bad as to be a criminal offense to users. But if you study their forums, you'll quickly get a sense of their support commitment, along with any unusually high user discontent. ACDSee 6.x was an unmitigated disaster, but their version 7 removed many features and bloat to become their best and fastest version yet. ZoneAlarm 5.x was another disaster that took the company an entire year to repair, but by then the company had lost most of its loyal customers. I'm sure you know of at least one or two from personal experience.

For the latest software implosion, check out the PGP Forum for their just released 9.0 version.

I'm a neat-freak about certain areas, for example, my bathroom is almost always spotless, yet my computer room is a working mess; my C-drive must be kept nice and defragmented, but my D-drive where I keep all the good stuff is a dump. I went to the grocery today and saw a disgusting lady with her hugely fat beer-gut hanging out of her tube-top and almost lost my lunch. So some people should be more anal about some things — put on some clothes, you pig!
