Developer's Corner / Re: What do I do now?
« Last post by mouser on May 15, 2006, 04:25 PM »
first of all, welcome to the site :)

it sounsd like donationware is definitely not something i would recommend -
it's a huge amount of work and no way to make money.

so i'm not going to be a great one to give you advice.  but there are some shareware coders here who might be able to advise you better in that direction.

but i hope you will keep us informed about what you learn, and i look forward to reading any replies from people who know a little bit more about the business end of software.

General Software Discussion / Re: completely unjust disregard for 'farr'
« Last post by mouser on May 15, 2006, 10:29 AM »
Nico,

is the problem just when farr hasn't been running for a while, it takes a bit of time to start up and come to the front?

i.e. press break -> delay -> comes up -> close it -> press break again -> comes up right away?

so that if we could get it to come up as fast the 2nd time as the first, the problem would be solved?

this is actually an issue on my todo list and it has to do with farr being paged out of memory because it tells the system it's safe to do so.  saves a little bit of memory but the plan is to add an option to disable this so it always loads fast.

Living Room / Invent a new term
« Last post by mouser on May 15, 2006, 06:33 AM »
Here's a new term i've invented.  Feel free to post your own.

markeshar - adjective used to define any service which has no non-trivial advantages over its competitors but is simply dominant because it has a big market share advantage. May also be used as a noun to refer to any such service.

example:
"their website sucks in every way but it's a markeshar site, so there is no point trying to compete with them"

Really lovely.

i love it :)
and i finally understand now the connection with egg yolk and the previous shed banner -
i think we have a kind of birth-of-the-universe metaphor going on here with cody as the creator..
or something like that..

i knew this was going to be a problem for dialuppers..
yeah i guess i will offer a plain mini download without the help or clipart.

only question is whether the default download will be this big one or else the mini one.

Unicode Image Maker / Re: Suggesion: show image size in statusbar
« Last post by mouser on May 14, 2006, 02:03 PM »
good idea, putting it on todo list.
you mean image size in pixel dimensions yes?
not expected filesize.
31687
nice idea about default email/browser/control panel/key folders.
a related idea has been discussed here:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2580.0

one thing i might do is have a command for creating a toolbar copy of the Start Menu - that would be a nice way to start out i think, and user could disable stuff and move it around as they see fit.

im working my way through doing moderate updates of all of my apps.
Done so far recently: browsertrayswitch, processtamer, url snooper, screenshot captor, google translator.
Coming up very soon: Launchbar Commander
and of course this summer's main project: FARR 2

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature request for group alias
« Last post by mouser on May 14, 2006, 12:57 PM »
this request is very much in line with the idea of making ACTIONS and FILES work together well and in a sophisticated way, so that you could have actions that get applied to specific kinds of files and vice versa.

so that if you chose an .rfp type file, farr would know to present you with a set of actions which included custom actions like you say, OR
you might type like an action "passcard" which would know that the next thing you need to specify is an .rfp type filename.

I just want to take a moment to say what i have said occasionally in the past, but probably not often enough.

Look around at some of the other freeware available on the internet and see how many have big comprehensive help files.. not too many.

Work on the help files, which aren't fun to do, is due to your donations to this site, and your continued support, both monetarily, and in terems of encouragement, bug reports, and expressed interests.

Your donations have a real effect - they make it possible for us to spend time on these things that may not be fun but are important.  Part of our commitment to all of you who have donated is to work on the aspects of this site and our programs that might not be fun, but which you tell us are important.

absolutely beautiful and has a wonderful "sandbox" for those interested in particle effects and simulations.

now whether it is a fun game to play.. almost doesn't matter.

How can you not love this game.. dripping with style and character..
great loading screen too :) i love it.  Very droll.

Being a parrot Beakings can't simply go to a restaurant and order a Mango.
Instead he has to climb a tree packed with animals trying to prevent our hero from stealing their mango.

C-evo is a freeware empire building game for Windows.
With a time scope of several thousand years, it covers aspects of exploration and expansion, industry and agriculture, warfare and diplomacy, science and administration. C-evo follows the spirit of popular turn-based strategy games from the mid 90s, but with more emphasis on powerful AI and careful design of the rules, resulting in a true challenge.
