yep, what carol says.
sometimes you want to print to a postscript printer if it supports it.
for example if you are printing .ps postscript papers from the web.
so occasionally you will install 2 printer drivers, creating two windows visible printers (one pcl and another postscript), both driving the same physical printer.
i do this with my hp2200.  printer experts might be able to shed more light on this, i just know from experimentation that sometimes tis better to use the postscript driver and sometimes better to use pcl (never seen much dif between pcl 5 and 6), so i install both as different ways of printing to the same printer.

that can also be useful if you want to configure like multiple print drivers for different settings (quality, doublesided, etc).  just because you have 1 physical printer doesnt mean you cant add it 5 times with different settings and treat it like 5 printers as far as windows is concerned.

carol i wonder the same thing..
even if asp.net is better, wouldn't it have to be a LOT LOT better to make it worth developing on at the risk of breaking compatibility with most servers?

Developer's Corner / Launch4j - Cross-platform Java executable wrapper
« Last post by mouser on May 19, 2006, 12:19 PM »
Cross-platform Java executable wrapper
Launch4j is a cross-platform tool for wrapping Java applications distributed as jars in lightweight Windows native executables. The executable can be configured to search for a certain JRE version or use a bundled one, and it's possible to set runtime options, like the initial/max heap size. The wrapper also provides better user experience through an application icon, a native pre-JRE splash screen, a custom process name, and a Java download page in case the appropriate JRE cannot be found.

Fyre is a tool for producing computational artwork based on histograms of iterated chaotic functions. At the moment, it implements the Peter de Jong map in a fixed-function pipeline with an interactive GTK+ frontend and a command line interface for easy and efficient rendering of high-resolution, high quality images.

Article: Why features don't matter anymore: the new laws of digital technology

The iPod was never sold on the grounds of its technical merits: Apple hit a gold-mine by marketing a cool new way of integrating music in your life. Even when Apple announced the iPod with video, it presented it not as the best multi-media player in the universe, but as a cool new way of watching "Desperate Housewives" and other TV shows.

i'm really liking the idea of using smarty..
plugins here:
http://smarty.incuti.../?page=SmartyPlugins

include things for making thumbnails, grabbing rss feeds, etc.
seems to me this is exactly the kind of stuff i was wanting.

and we could add extenesions(plugins) to smarty for doing things like:
grabbing posts/thread contents, grabbing # of replies on a thread, grabbing attached images for a post, etc.

so that smarty could be the basis of doing the actual building of static pages from content+templates.

the idea of building static pages will also let us do some fun stuff like adding random quotes to pages, etc., without worrying about dynamic page generation costs.  i like it. the idea of statically generating pages is very appealing to me.

then on top of that we would build a system that would know how to tell smarty what to rebuild and when and where to put output (ie when certain posts change, or when an article is "published", etc.).

then there is the issue of how do users write content (articles, download pages, etc.)

that does look nice - i like the image interface though it's a bit restrictive in terms of placemenet.

i do not think it's an altogether trivial interface you are describing, though lots of cms work very similarly.

image uploading and positioning is a bit tricky.

i'm still thinking of modifying the the forum infrastructure to provide editing and management for the articles rather than a new custom system..

Find And Run Robot / farr v2 planning - use cases and action idea
« Last post by mouser on May 19, 2006, 06:30 AM »
One could perhaps handle the problem with FARR interpreting misspelled action modifiers as regular search terms by demanding some unusual prefix letter before all actions.

this is an interesting possibility.. it has been raised before but i always though, ok let the user create their own regex aliases with a special prefix if they want but don't force it.

however, if we said that all actions start with some character (say $ or ` or  . or whatever), then that might solve the core of this dilimena, in that anytime a word starts with $ then farr knows the users is specifying a modifier or action and it would NOT be involved in narrowing down file names (except to the extend that it matches a modiifer name).

then we could have action searching either in the results window temporarily, or in a separate window or edit field.

so for example, revisiting my example above, if you type "bob dyl" and then you've got 3 results of bob dylan songs, you could then type
'bob dyl +tagedit"

and then hit enter for #1, farr will know you want to perform the tagedit operation on file result #1.

furthermore it would let you type
"+play bo"

and +play would act both as a modifier restricting search to mp3 files and as an action specifier for when you hit enter.

you could also use it as a pure modier like "+mydocs bob dy"

the other nice thing about having a special character for actions is it lets farr HELP YOU when you start typing a modifier
so that when you type "+m" it could remind you of matching modifiers as a hint.
it could do that EITHER by temporarily changing the results list to a list of matching modifiers/actions, which you could select by number,
OR it could use a secondary results box of available actions (same input field different results box), or it could insist you always fully type out a modifier but give you a little hint about matching modifiers/actions in some little box somewhere, OR it could provide some kind of autocomplete.

at this very moment im feeling like this might offer the key solution to letting us move forward on this.. there would still be some hard decisions about user interface but i think this might solve the core of the use case dilemna i have been struggling with.

-

i tend to agree with jgpaiva in terms of hotkeys; some people love them - i personally can NEVER remember any, so they just drive me crazy.  i like that farr is meant to let users just start typing and not have to remember anything.

having said that, i like the idea of being able to allow experts to specify hotkeys for any modifiers/actions, but it should be optional and not central to use.

looks interesting carol;
in this case i think we want to be more rigid about formatting.. i think.

smarty looks particularly relevant in terms of template/content processing: http://smarty.php.net/whyuse.php

i think jgpaiva is right, and i would agree with that.
let's have a standard format and css for articles/reviews/download pages,
so that there is uniformity of appearance.

i was looking at Smarty Templates and Zend for PHP - any opinions?

one more tweak:
the change prevents adding timestamps to urls in the main Links dir but not in its children -
i think it would be best (i would prefer) not adding timestamps to any url in any subdir of Links as well.
