Developer's Corner / What happens to the code when the programmer dies?
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2006, 05:27 PM »
Does anyone have a link to the recent little article/blog post on making plans for what happens to the source code if a programmer dies?
I can't seem to find it.

I am making arrangements now to make sure that should something happen to me all of the DC software will stay free or go open source, and the site will continue to be run as it is.

ps.
i am adding a clause such that if i am assasinated by a DC member or member of alt.comp.freeware, then all of my software will become the possession of microsoft.

ps2.
i am adding a clause such that if i am assasinated by a member of mircrosoft, all of my software and this site will beomce the possession of google.

ps3.
i am adding a clause such that if i am assasinated by a member of google, all of my software and this site will beomce the possession of yahoo.

Living Room / Re: Having trouble adding credits.
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2006, 05:09 PM »
sure i'll help :)

(i also hope to make this more automatic in the future, which it should be possible on repeat donations).

ok, so
when you donated you should have gotten an email with an activation code.
so click on the "Profile and Membership" button at the top of all forum pages.

now in the upper middle of the page next to the count of how many current credits you have (0), will be a link saying "Activate new code".

click that and then paste in the code you got in your email.
that should add the credits to your account :)

you can also find this link from your donationcredits history page:
https://www.donation...edits;detail=history

just look under the "how else may we help you list"

let me know if you need more help.

always makes me very happy when people are using their donationcredits to give out to one another  :D

Find And Run Robot / Re: farr v2 planning - use cases and action idea
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2006, 03:03 PM »
the most important part of this idea is that the special key comes as a PREFIX to an action/modifier,
so

+vbs +edit xmltv

or

`vbs `edit xmltv

or
xmltv +vbs +edit

(all would mean same thing; user can change prefix character)

the reason this is so important is that farr can know that when it sees the prefix, then the typed characters afterware do NOT narrow down the search for filenames.

now we still need some feedback for actions and mofiers.  we would have lots of choices:
1) when you type the modifier prefix, the results switch to a list of matching actions until you finish typing the modifier
2) any string you type after the modifier prefix would be "auto-completed" (ie auto-suggest word completion as you type)
3) we could have another pop up results mini window for possible matching actions/modifiers
4) we could have a simple 1 line reminder of matching actions

(the point of the 1-4 above is to give some kind of feedback/reminder for modifier keywords so you have some help remembering them)

then ANOTHER issue is after you finish typing and have a result list of files,
and there is more than one possible action applicable, how does user choose action.
if there is only one then we can just run it.

what about have 2 result lists.
one for files, and one for actions.

the action list will show relevant actions for the selected or currently viewed files.

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: Can't print flipbook
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2006, 01:55 PM »
of course flipbook printer can print in color!

you know that color problem issue sounds familiar.
my memory was the person who also had that fixed it by changing the "Quality" setting:
mycaps Screenshot - 001 , 01_49_PM , May 20 2006.png

try changing that higher or lower and see if it doesn't fix the color and or print queue problem.
let me know if you would so i can see if there is a connection.

Living Room / Re: A Partial (new) Mission Statement Idea for DonationCoder?
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2006, 10:31 AM »
Suggestion:  Can we have a mini-reviews page with links to all of the mini-review pages?  From the actual reviews have a link to the discussion for that review.  It'd be nice to have a discussion topic specifically attached to each review.  $0.02

this is being worked on at the moment - in terms of building a mini cms backend for dc which will allow us to have nicely organized sections of the website with minireviews and articles much more accessible and findable - and more clear links between articles/reviews and their discussion threads.

so we are on the same page.

this is also related to app's comment.  in that yes we are already doing this - now can we take it to the next level and make the site organized a little better to help people find the info they need.

Living Room / A Partial (new) Mission Statement Idea for DonationCoder?
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2006, 08:59 AM »
leaving aside the homegrown software we make on this site (that can be subject of another post) -

it seems that a common thread here is trying to discover the best software/services/websites.
those are perform best, are most convenient to use, and also reputable, trustworthy, reliable, and worth supporting.

i notice in myself one of the things that bothers me most about the internet (and the world in general) is how much marketing and advertising seems to be *the* determining factor for success of a product/service.  I'm sure i can't be the only one troubled by such things.

so that the inferior product can get marketed into financial success and market dominance, while some great single-person or small company products can get completely overlooked.

so i was thinking,
maybe we should start thinking about one of the "missions" of this site (and especially this forum), being to cut through all of the marketing hype, and help each other and others find the best programs/webservices for their needs, bypassing the hype and marketing.

of course this is what we are pretty much already doing, and i have always tried to emphasize this idea w.r.t. reviews (i.e. try to help people choose the best programs) but maybe it helps to think about this as a real central mission.  so wherever there is a field or category of software/webservice where we feel marketing hype may be overshadowing a better service/software, we can try to bring some attention and clarity to the issue.

Let's make sure that if there are underdogs which might be better products and are getting lost in a blizzard of marketing for competing inferior produts, that we can help shed some light on stuff.

As always, we aren't zealots for free software or open source.  There are innate values in those kinds of software, but our primary concern should be: what is the best tool for the job.  If we can make a contribution to the internet by being a resource for discovering the best tools without regard to hype and marketing dollars, I think everyone will be the better for it.

Opinions?

must be some programs that do this..
look forward to finding out about some myself.

OBJ files for example : I want them deleted from my own projects but not from 3rd party products.
..
Just to clarify one thing - the folders are excluded folders, not included folders.  if nothing is defined then the entire drive is scanned.

ah that makes a lot of sense now.

some suggestions (you asked!):

1) i can't imagine too many cases of wanting to apply different masks in different directories, so having to specify same dirs for each mask seems really painful.  better to just have a single list of dirs i think.
2) and then a list of masks (with checkboxes to let you temporarily disable each?)

3) the ability to drag and drop folders (or a shell extension) to scan a folder (and children) would be to me my #1 request, especially for testing purposes.

4) i think it pays to explain more about how DCS integrates into Windows Disk Cleanup and how to use Windows Disk Cleanup; it's not something i am familiar with and i bet im not alone, and its one of the unique features about this app that people might like.

5) results might also be a candidate for not putting each dif mask on its own tab (have to check each tab to see whats scheduled for deletion might be a bit cumbersome).

just some ideas - feel free to ignore :)

i'm trying to think if there are cases where .obj files are needed and shouldn't be deleted (if so might want to disable that one by default).

reminder: you dont need license keys for any of skrommel's software.
only certain software on this site (my big programs) require a license key.

in fact from Skromme's page (http://www.1hoursoftware.com/) you can download the pre-compiled exes as well as the original ahk source code to modify yourself.

skrommel kind of puts me to shame in that department  :-[

ps.
this is a good occassion to remind people that the DonationCredits system can be used to send Skrommel some credits.  Remember, when you donate you get 50% of your donation credits back to you in the form of DonationCredits, so you can choose where that money goes.  Just click on the $ next to someone's name to send them some of your credits. If you use skrommel's software and/or want to support his work, send him some credits!

just posted:

Skype Technologies has updated its popular Skype Internet telephony software to fix a security bug that could expose sensitive data.

The flaw could let an attacker construct a Skype hyperlink which, when clicked on by the target, sends a file from the victim's computer to another Skype user, the company said in a security alert published Friday.
