maybe a heart with a gold coin in it? or just the gold coin? or just the heart?

i might be over-analyzing, but i like how in the first talking heads one, the guy speaking $ is not isolated from the rest.  otherwise it feels like too much emphasis on the $.  but when he is just one of the others it feels more appropriate.

forum help: https://www.donation...ction=help;page=post
(i really need to make a link to that forum help somewhere)

as for unread threads - the closest is a Recent Threads list, found in the top box where it says Greetings XXXX,
look for the link "Show recent topics".

Oh, you should never have anything else open if you are using TotalAccess

hahahah - sounds like leaving totalaccess could not be done soon enough.
for what it's worth, i leave thebat running 24hours a day.
31457
seems like it's good you left totalaccess.

2 things:
i saw a hint that you might be able to import the csv mail files into outlook, and then maybe from outlook into thebat.

i have another idea:
it seems like totalaccess people could really use some help getting their emails into a format where they could import them into another email client.

maybe you could export 2 or 3 (needs to be more than one) spam emails with no sensitive information, and export them into a csv file and attach it to a post.  someone here may be able to make a little csv -> unix mailbox format converter. if you have an email with an attachment (picture for example) that would be important.

lastly:
you can pretty easily tell thebat to automatically put all mail from different accounts into one folder.  Pocomail is more directly set up for this kind of thing, and handles it differnetly, but it's really not hard in thebat.  you basically create your different accounts, and then in each one add a filter that says to move all incoming mail into folder XXXX.

if it's desired i can add a little biography field where people can put in extra info.
additionally - i hope our new mini-CMS system will allow any member to have a little page of their own.

again zip drive - maybe not the greatest thing in the world, but it was the bees knees for a while and of all the removable media failures, there are sooooo many horribly worse ones it's not even funny.

ok let's have some fun - lets work together to put together a new list:

25 Worst Magazine Tech Awards of All Time

(all starring PC World)

then we can make a page of it.
start with Rovers:
1. Worst PC Mag of the last 25 Years: PC World.

i'll add mine:
2. Worst Tech. article of the last 25 Years: PC World's "25 Worst Tech Products of All Time"

ok 23 left to go.

As you can imagine it can get pretty hectic around here trying to manage everything.

And as we are working to improve the site and make it better at being the site we all want it to be, having some help can make all the difference.  Rather than try to be all things to all people, we are going to concentrate on the things we do best (reviews and donationware), and do them better and better.

Two longtime members have agreed to help out in some specific responsibilities:
  • Ampa has agreed to be in charge of discounts and giveaways from now on.  No, this doesnt mean you should send him flowers in order for him to pick you to win the giveaways - the prize optimizer will still be used for this.  But it does mean that Ampa will handle the sometimes labor intensive work involved in keeping all the discount pages up to date and in contacting companies about possible discounts.  So if you know of a program you think would be good to ask for a discount on, and don't feel comfortable contacting the company your self, ask Ampa
  • Josh has agreed to be a kind of official screencaster - making video demo movies of various programs discussed on the forum.  Others are of course welcome to make screencasts as well, but if there is a mini-review posted on the forum, Josh will try to make a screencast movie of it to help users get a better feel for the program.  We are hoping to greatly expand this idea on DonationCoder so that we can provide users with a more complete view of the best apps.  If you know of a program that you think could use a screencast to help show its features, ask Josh.

Thanks to both of these brave souls for agreeing to help out the site - please make sure you send them a few donationcredits when they do a good job.  And wish them luck!

never.

i get a bit defensive about realplayer - because they virtually pioneered mainstream low-bandwidth audio/video.  the big cites serving up audio and video (like c-span.org) were all built off of realplayer.  their tech achievement is substantial.  to label them one of the worst is ignorant.  it would be more appropriate to give them an award for their tech accomplishments.  as we speak there are some viable alternatives to realplayer - and there are some annoyances with the player, but that's another matter.
31467
agree, it sounds like they just had lunch and whenever someone complained about a program they added it to the list. stupid.  they didn't seem to put any effort at all into differentiating between truly horrible stuff and stuff they could think up off the top of their head.

there is a very cool program called ClickBook:
http://www.bluesquir.../products/clickbook/

that may be able to do this and more.

it's sort of like fineprint (another fantastic app), but made more for specialty booklet printing.  but i notice they have a poster mode.

if it works, maybe we could contact them and fineprint and see about a discount?

http://www.scintilla.org/
Scintilla is a free source code editing component. It comes with complete source code and a license that permits use in any free project or commercial product.
As well as features found in standard text editing components, Scintilla includes features especially useful when editing and debugging source code. These include support for syntax styling, error indicators, code completion and call tips. The selection margin can contain markers like those used in debuggers to indicate breakpoints and the current line. Styling choices are more open than with many editors, allowing the use of proportional fonts, bold and italics, multiple foreground and background colours and multiple fonts.

note this on the scintilla page:
The biggest problem with Richedit and other similar controls is that they treat styling changes as important persistent changes to the document so they are saved into the undo stack and set the document's dirty flag. For source code, styling should not be persisted as it can be mechanically recreated.

i know that there are delphi/bcb wrappers for scintilla.

good ideas, i will try to add them.
ps.
personally i never use region capture mode - i always just capture entire screen, and then crop it - seems easier and more controllable to me.

looks a bit like musikCube, which i have been using recently (http://www.musikcube.com/).

great idea  ;D

but:
i really take issue with some of the things on that list, and i always take pc world with a big grain of salt.  even if you dont love internet explorer 6 and realplayer, to consider those 2 part of the top ten worst tech products of all time is assinine.   bad job pc world, lazy
31473
great, and welcome to the site damon
31474
vadim - i think you are definitely right - and i think that eventually this thread is moving in that direction.
it's probably just a matter of first trying to figure out and organize such issues - as you probably agree i don't think anyone yet knows how to formulate a perfect list of test cases or exact features.. but this thread is doing a great job of trying to figure out such a thing, and i hope eventually the outcome is a kind of summary of the main issues and features that would make a perfect note taking program..

General Software Discussion / Re: Taonotes (weird software!)
« Last post by mouser on May 26, 2006, 12:54 PM »
first of all,
actitrend/vadim - welcome to the site! glad to have you here and participating in the discussion

second of all, any program that can be called weird, by my way of thinking, is a good thing :)  99% of the software in this world is just plain bad and boring. so when someone calls your software weird, to me i say bravo   :P

it's very hard to balance writing a program that works according to what people are used to and then trying to do something new.  and of course everyone has different tastes..

so like i said, welcome to the discussion and i hope you stay around join in, especially in the note taking discussion thread,
