might be nice to have a drag and drop program for doing this really quickly - drag files into one half of the window.  drag them out to another program and the program will automatically recompress them in tiny size for destination program, without ever modifying the original.

one thing you could do is get one of these registry change tracking programs and only watch that key, and then you should be able to have a history of different settings for dif file associations and restore each one, with a bit of effort.

dont know a specific registry tracking app that will do that but ill bet there are some..

Is there a way to modify the behavior, either in office, or system wide, of the "smart select" stuff which is anything but?

i double click on a word in frontpage, and it selects the word plus one extra space to the right.. yeah, that makes sense.. shoot me.

similarly annoying happens when selecting words manually, with the thing insisting on selecting extra punctuation, etc.

surely others know this insane behavior i'm talking about.. any fix?

Living Room / Thinking outside the box: very cool simple idea from epson
« Last post by mouser on June 04, 2006, 12:29 AM »
while in the store looking for lcd monitors a friend pointed out something very cool epson just started doing..
you know how you normally have to try to match up your printer model with the ink it takes, so you are always trying to remember your exact model and then find it listed on ink packages.

well what epson has started doing is using some distinctive pictures, that are on your printer and on ink packages that are compatible with is.

so one model has a guitar, another has a tropical fish, etc.

very clever because your mind can remember those a lot better than model numbers and its much easier to spot on a package.

very simple, very clever.
it's the first time ive seen it on printer ink, but i'll bet the idea has been used in other markets for matching up products with compatible accessories..

Living Room / Re: Is firewire better than USB?
« Last post by mouser on June 04, 2006, 12:19 AM »
I think the best solution would be to have a hard drive enclosure capable of supporting both usb and firewire.

yup, this is what i had; like i said the firewire never worked right though, so i just use the usb2.  but frankly i have no interest in using firewire anyway so i dont care.

can you tell us what version of the program you are using, what operating system you have, and when the error came up?  can you reproduce the error?
31339
don't know if it exists yet, but that's a nice idea - i wouldn't mind that either.

my understanding is that there is very little difference in speed and quality of usb2 vs. firewire.

firewire is surelly faster than usb1, but most computers and usb drives are usb2 now.

in general, i would prefer usb2 over firewire any time. more compatible with more devices, and i had bad experience with my bytecc hd enclosure and firewire.

just my 2 cents.

Developer's Corner / Firefox for Web Developers
« Last post by mouser on June 03, 2006, 04:54 PM »
Just wanted to post a note from the perspective of a long time Internet Explorer (Netcaptor) user, on using firefox to help test a javascript web app.

Crono and I have been working on this World Cup Predictor (https://www.donation...ndex.php?board=192.0), and firefox has been a life saver in terms of being able to detect and locate javascript errors.

One of the things that is crystal clear is that a major focus in Firefox is providing support functions for web developers and testers.  It has made all the difference in the world.

Just a heads up for those people doing javascript/web development.  In general it's always good to have multiple browsers, but clearly for me i will do my web scripting using firefox as primary test environment.  Caveat: I have not tried opera for this.

Living Room / troubling article: Adobe restricting pdf creation
« Last post by mouser on June 03, 2006, 03:33 PM »
this is troubling..
one of the dangers of non-open file formats being adopted widely..

Microsoft told to remove PDF support from Office 2007

Microsoft raised a few eyebrows when it announced that it would natively support the ability to publish documents in Adobe PDF format. Given the popularity of PDF documents (for better or worse) on the web, support from Microsoft was seen by most as a nice addition for Office 2007.

That is all about to change now due to concerns raised by Adobe. The two companies were in talks for the past four months about the inclusion of PDF functionality in Office 2007, but those talks broke down recently. Microsoft contended that it is in the clear as far as native PDF support goes and that its customers have been asking for the features. Adobe countered by saying that Microsoft should either remove the feature altogether or charge customers for it. "The 'save as PDF' feature is the second most popular request we get from customers. Adobe has told the world that PDF is an open format...and (rival) products OpenOffice, WordPerfect Office and Apple (Computer's applications) already support PDF and tout it as a selling feature. Microsoft should be able to support PDF as well," stated Microsoft attorney Dave Heiner.

As a result of the legal bickering, Microsoft will remove not only the save as PDF feature that is available in Office 2007 Beta 2, but also the ability to save documents in Microsoft’s own XPS format. Customers will, however, be able to download both options as free downloads from Microsoft's Office homepage.

Brian Jones, program manager for Microsoft Office, is really disheartened over the whole situation. He recently wrote about his thoughts on the matter in his blog:

This really is one of those cases where you just have to shake your head. Adobe got a lot of goodwill with customers, particularly in government circles, for making PDF available as an open standard. It’s amazing that they would go back on the openness pledge. Unfortunately, the really big losers here are the customers who now have one extra hassle when they deploy Office.

Living Room / registrar accused of widespread cyber squatting
« Last post by mouser on June 03, 2006, 02:57 PM »
what's most interesting and troubling about this is that this is a registrar that is being accused of doing this.

..
A new federal lawsuit charges that Dotster, one of the largest domain name registrars, has unlawfully participated in a massive cybersquatting campaign targeting companies such as Cingular Wireless, Disney, Ikea, Google, Neiman Marcus, Playboy and Verizon.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday by high-end retailers Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, alleges that Dotster abused its status as a registrar by "checking out" hundreds of domain names that closely resemble the correct ones--and then keeping only the ones that were visited by Web users who couldn't spell very well.
..

31349
yeah this is a really nice idea actually, if you had like for each extension, something that could track the HISTORY of association and icon changes, and easily let you switch to any previous association/history. that would really be nice.
