Living Room / Re: Recommendations for good external hard drive solutions?
« Last post by mouser on June 06, 2006, 07:26 PM »
i have used swapable drive racks in an external usb hard drive enclosure for a few years - and i'm very happy with it.

let's me have multiple backup hard drives and easily move them offsite for backup security even in the event of fire or theft.

the other nice thing is i use drive racks in my pc as well so its easy to swap drives between the main pc and the enclosure.

i generally buy such stuff at http://www.directron...com/hard-drives.html
(normally i would buy from newegg.com but directron has better variety for this stuff)

ok you convinced me - no more implementing user feature requests in my programs.

anyone who has a problem with my new policy should just spam Mark0 and blame him.

« Last post by mouser on June 06, 2006, 07:13 AM »
This is a call for experts to fill in some probability estimates for the World Cup Predictor
(https://www.donationcoder.com/wcp)

Until we get some expert ratings it's of no real use!

If you  know someone who fancies themselves a football/soccer expert, please have them check it out and give it a go.  There will be prizes :)

AND PLEASE:
if you know of anyone who would find this interesting (soccer/football fans, world cup fanatics, statistics fiends, pro gamblers, etc.) please pass it along! otherwise no one will ever hear about it until it's too late  :(

Living Room / Re: Is firewire better than USB?
« Last post by mouser on June 05, 2006, 06:53 PM »
By the way, be careful if you use firewire for external hdds. I've ended up with sevaral cases of filesystem corruption. Appearantly has to do with some DMA buffer size limitation not being reported correctly or whatever, and there's some filter driver to fix it.

f0dder that sounds like exactly what happened to me.

Best File/Folder Compare Tool / Re: Araxis Merge is still my favorite
« Last post by mouser on June 05, 2006, 06:49 PM »
araxis merge is a fantastic tool, there can be no doubt.
it works a bit differently than beyond compare, which is sometimes good and sometimes not as good.

it has some unique fantastic features like 3-way comparison, and has an excellent in-place editor which blows beyond compare away in terms of being able to do serious edits while comparing.

note that in our big review we did talk about how good araxis is (https://www.donation...pareTools/index.html).

the main problem with araxis is.. the price.

i agree with the above posts: i'd love more space for backups, but until they can get them really cheap, it's not a viable alternative to using an external hard drive.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA : Create your own Tool Tips
« Last post by mouser on June 05, 2006, 08:11 AM »
you know this is a brilliant idea - and maybe it could be expanded a bit.

basically you are saying - a way for 3rd party people to write some little interactive help to go with a program, maybe customized for a specific task.  very nice idea.  similar to the cheat sheeter idea that got 75% implemented here on dc but went into hibernation..

as for blank space at end and too much music at begining, and some random music in the middle of gothic's interview, and the volume changes throughout, those are all carefully planned and inserted - don't believe anyone who tells you i am just a bad postcast audio editor..

Find And Run Robot / Re: not freeware !!!
« Last post by mouser on June 05, 2006, 05:10 AM »
edyshor -
first of all, thank you for a very thoughtfull post.

you are not the first person to say this but you have said it in the most reasonable and thoughtful way of anyway and that is very much appreciated.

as carol says, we have been debating both privately and publically the best way to describe what we are doing.  part of the problem is that there is no perfect term for what we are doing.. is it shareware? no.  so what is it then?  Registerware might be closest term, but i'm not sure many people understand that concept.

i do personally consider our software donationware (and i consider it freeware).  because i think our software meets the key principles of those terms.  However, I do acknowledge that there is a line and if it becomes too inconvenient for people to use the programs without doing "something" then you begin to abuse the terms.

if you get the chance check out the long article we wrote about some of these ideas:
http://articles.dona...r.com/One/index.html

that might explain a little more about what we are trying to do; there is also a long usenet thread which has much more elaborate discussion of this issue:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3651.0

what i can tell you is that we take comments like yours very seriously, and we are cogitating on the best way we can improve the communication of what we are doing without giving up our core principles.  Maybe we can find a way to make everyone happier with the way we describe our software, either by changing the terms of describing it or changing our policies.  Whatever we do, our software will remain free to use.

Developer's Corner / Where to submit your podcast to let people know about it
« Last post by mouser on June 05, 2006, 01:02 AM »
I was thinking maybe with all the work we are putting into our podcasts, perhaps it would be a good idea if more people listened to it than the 5 or 6 people who participated in making it (actually - i wonder if our listening audience is even that big  :-\).

so i went looking for where we might spread the word about it.  came across this pretty big list.  truth be known, looking at this just made me thing, feh, it's too much trouble to try to get out the word about it - let the spiders and search engines discover it on their own.  but thought i would post about this page anyway.  maybe someone has a different view..

ok let's face it.. there is no terms for this, but you'll know what i'm talking about when you see a picture of it:
