Living Room / Re: SPAM reaching epidemic proportions
« Last post by mouser on June 08, 2006, 05:20 AM »
i am finding a similar situation to yours carol, things seem to be getting worse..
my strategy has been:
1) keep a variety of emails, some of which are only given out to real humans, etc. and some only for signing up places.
2) my spam filter throws everything into a folder that i scan once a week for real mail that is falsely marked for spam.

people using these things that require a real human to go to a web page and verify they are human seem like they would go along way to solving issues.. i wish i had the luxury to require people who email me to do this but i think it would be unfair to them to make them jump through such hoops.

i really wish we had some harsh laws penalizing spammers..

sure - it's easy
go to your find+run robot folder on your desktop
there you will find a file like:
DonationCoder_findrunrobot_Key.dat

just copy that to the find+run robot directory on your laptop and it will be licensed :)

also:
if you forget a license key you can see it in the about box.

and any time you need a new license key you can go to:
https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php

and it will give you another.
31282
that's actually quite beautiful. might make a fun screensaver as well.
31283
we were discussing on the irc channel a while ago a story line involving Cody and his evil cousin.
join irc and chat about it :)
31284
screensaver installs and shows it running in the about box (cool!) but i cant get it to work for real..
(preview shows static image and running it has no effect)  any one else get it to work?
31285
deozaan how about a flash game staring Cody? i can provide some nice clean images of him :)
31286
Deozaan - you did all those animations on big hed's studio? cool!!!!
sticks in space has great atmosphere! very fun.

and i've seen your flash experiments before - i think you should make #040425 into a screensavers - it's very cool to look at.

great stuff.

never mind - no one loves WCP  :hanged:

i put in the values myself - it's a great starting point for the first round of the tournament..
still need good estimates of the other values though.

Explore the sea of names, letter by letter...watch trends rise and fall, and dive in deeper to see your favorite name's place in the historical tides.
The Baby Name Wizard's NameVoyager is an interactive portrait of America's name choices. Start with a "sea" of nearly 5000 names. Type a letter, and you'll zoom in to focus on how that initial has been used over the past century. Then type a few more letters, or a name. Each stripe is a timeline of one name, its width reflecting the name's changing popularity. If a name intrigues you, click on its stripe for a closer look.

Body-mod artists Jesse Jarrell and Steve Haworth's original idea was to implant a magnet to carry metal gadgets. It turns out that doesn't work: If you try to carry something magnetic on your implant regularly, the pinched skin between the magnets dies and your body rejects the implant. But they came up with a new application when a mutual friend suffered an accident that left a shard of iron in his finger. He worked with audio equipment, and found that he could tell which speakers were magnetized from the sensation that passed through his finger at close range.
That gave Jarrell and Haworth a new direction: Could they obtain that effect deliberately, extending the sense of touch into a sense of magnetism?
Todd Huffman, a graduate student at Arizona State University with a background in neuroscience, joined the project and brainstormed with Jarrell and Haworth about how, and where, to best implant a powerful magnet. He helped come up with the most effective design for an implant, and eventually became the first recipient. "The fingertip was chosen because of the high nerve density, and because the hands are constantly interacting with the environment, increasing the chances of sensing electromagnetism in the world," Huffman says.

I'm putting out a call for help entering the data from this page into WCP '06.  It will give us a good starting point:

http://www.wccomp.co.uk/betting.asp

if you go to that page you will see a table of the Round One Games.

clicking on a row will show you people predictions of scores for when each match is played.

At the bottom of that table is "Average Predicted ScoreLine"

You want to grab that score and enter it into the edit table for your settings (remember settings table is alphabetical so to find a match look up earlier name on left).

Make sure to name the title of your saved settings so you can come back to it.

all the match prediction pages are of the form:
http://www.wccomp.co...-group.asp?GameId=75
through
http://www.wccomp.co...group.asp?GameId=122

email me if you have further questions ([email protected]) - i could really use the help entering this data!

Living Room / Article: Why Adobe and Microsoft Hit Delete on PDF Deal
« Last post by mouser on June 07, 2006, 01:23 AM »
continuing the ms-adobe debacle:

...
If you want to know why so many computer programs are so bad these days, take a look at the Adobe-Microsoft mess.
These two powerful software developers have gotten into an argument over whether Microsoft can include a new feature in its upcoming Office 2007 productivity suite -- the ability to save your work as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file.
In the process, they're showing how old-fashioned greed and the more modern ailment of lawsuit phobia can turn a promising program sour.
...
Adobe has its own monopolistic instincts: Last year it bought what was by far its biggest competitor in the graphics-software business, Macromedia. And it's been happy to exploit the demand for its free Adobe Reader to push unrelated software on users -- the Windows version normally comes with a Yahoo toolbar and Adobe's Photoshop album photo organizer.
Microsoft, meanwhile, has a history of taking standards developed by other companies, then writing software that somehow makes them work best, or only, on Microsoft operating systems. That conduct helped Microsoft lose many of its antitrust battles in the past decade; it's easy to see why the company wants to avoid a return to those days.

Living Room / Re: Recommendations for good external hard drive solutions?
« Last post by mouser on June 07, 2006, 12:39 AM »
this might seem contradictory but i also think xminus1's advice is quite good.  getting one of these self-contained (one-touch style) external hds which costs a little bit more can be a very good decision if you don't have plans to do a lot of swapping, etc.  i have no hesitation recommending such a solution for those that want an external backup drive but don't feel the need to do tons of rack-based swapping.

just make sure you get an enclosure that will fit a rack.
normally that means a 5.25 enclosure with an "open face" (ie one suitable for mounting a cd drive).

that email sounds like i would not buy from them.
they sound like they are selling you stuff you dont need at high prices.

if you are a bit more adventurous, you can build your own system by buying enclosure+racks+harddrives directly instead of in some super kit.

when you buy an enclosure it comes with a power adapter (just a standard plug in the cases i've seen), and if someone tried to charge me $26 for a usb cable or $45 for a firewire cable, i'd show them the underside of my boot  >:(

[however, i do recognize that their is some value in having a complete tested kit]

i'd love to see an example of this in action - maybe someone could take some screenshots of it in use, or even better maybe josh can make a little screencast movie of it working if someone can send him some example files.
